Kiwi Crate boxes are designed around fun themes and filled with all of the materials and inspiration for hands-on projects for kids ages 3-7. L and I have been doing the projects together for ages, but he’s close to outgrowing it (he’s 7) so my 3 year-old and I worked on this one together.
Kiwi Crate ships via FedEx Smart Post and generally takes about a week to arrive. All of my Kiwi Crate boxes (Kiwi Crate, Koala Crate and Doodle Crate) arrived together in one large box this month, as they have been lately.
This one looked like a winner from the start. My kids are basically obsessed with the crane game so this seemed perfect.
The December 2015 Kiwi Crate theme was “Arcade” and included two projects “The Claw” and “Pom Pom Prizes”.
Project #1 – The Claw
The first project was “The Claw” which included all of the necessary materials to make your claw. The project was high on the grown-up involvement scale, low on the messiness scale and involved “communicating”, “discovering” and “moving – fine”.
I totally agree that this one required a lot of grownup involvement. W is on the low end of the age scale so I had to do most of it, but he was able to do a few of the steps on his own. I didn’t have much faith that the instructions would result in a working claw, but I am pleased to report that they did! I was absolutely shocked. I thought, no way this is going to work. But it totally did. And W ran off with it right away to go pick up every single thing he could find.
Project #2 – Pom Pom Prizes
The second project in the box was Pom Pom Prizes. This one was medium on the grownup involvement scale, low on the messiness scale and involved “creating” and “moving – fine”.
The instructions on this one clearly state that you should wrap the yarn LOOSELY around the winder. Do you think I paid attention to that? Nope. And what happened? The winder broke. Oops! I used a piece of leftover cardboard from the claw so it all worked out fine, but they are serious, wind it loosely. I think these little guys turned out adorable and we loved picking them up with our claw.
explore! Magazine
As usual, the explore! magazine includes puzzles, games, recipes, experiments, stories and additional activities relating to the theme. It even has a tutorial to turn your Kiwi Crate box into a claw game and includes colorable pictures to decorate your crane game with. Very creative!
