Petit Vour January 2016 Subscription Box Review

Petit Vour is a monthly subscription box of cruelty-free beauty products, hand-picked from businesses that align quality with progressive standards. Boxes are $15/month and they do an excellent job making sure that the value well exceeds the cost.

The Information Card

The January 2016 Petit Vour theme was “do good, be well” and included the following items:

~Evelyn Iona Gel Liner + Brush Set ($22): The liner brush is full-sized, but the gel liner itself is just a sample. I am trusting the value on the information card because there is no size listed on the bottle. I don’t wear eyeliner on a regular basis, but even if I did my hands just are not steady enough for a gel liner. However, this can also be used as an eyebrow filler, which may come in handy.

~S.W. Basics Mini Cream (0.7oz / 22g) ($12): Okay, so I generally love S.W. Basics products and have tried this cream in the past. It contains just three ingredients (Fair Trade Shea Butter, Coconut Oil & Olive Oil) and works amazing. All that said though, there is something up with the cream that was in this box. It smells kind of like farm animals. I checked the PV Facebook page to see if anyone else had this issue and it’s not just mine. Someone described it as smelling like rancid milk.Either way it’s not a good smell. This was completely sealed so I am not sure what happened, but I will update when I hear more.  ETA: I spoke with Petit Vour who directed me to Lizzy at S.W. Basics (lizzy@swbasicsofbk.com).  It sounds like the batch of this cream was made with a different olive oil than they typically use and noted that is what is causing the stronger than normal scent.  They offered to send me a new mini cream when they come back in stock.  I offered to send my cream back to them so they could check it out in person.  Hopefully they can figure out what the issue was and make sure it doesn’t happen again going forward.

~French Girl Organics Rose Lip Polish (0.25oz / 7g) ($4): Now this smells great! You scoop some on your lips, scrub and then rinse with warm water. It’s 100% vegan and made out of 100% plant ingredients.

~Kaia Naturals Bamboo Tapioca Beads (.18oz / 5g) ($4.42): This is a daily exfoliating cleanser made from 100% natural ingredients: coconut, chickpeas, deep cleansing clay and a touch of tapioca to absorb oil.  It’s very gentle and smells awesome. It also works as a mask (leave on for 10 minutes).  I like this so much I will likely end up buying the full-size!

All totaled I came up with a value of $42.42 for the January 2016 Petit Vour box.  A good value, but as I mentioned there is an issue with the cream. I will update as soon as I hear something!

Probably the SW Basics cream went bad. I’ve definitely had that happen to natural body and skincare products before. The lack of preservatives means the oils can turn.

I have decided I’m not a fan of SW Basics. I like the idea, in theory, but in practice, the products don’t usually end up working for me — they disintegrate weirdly (like a lip balm I had, which became all grainy) or are kind of ineffective for their intended purposes (like a face exfoliator I tried, which just felt like putting paste all over my face).

Thanks for the info! How long (in general) does it take before they turn? Do you get Petit Vour?

I have the exact same SW Cream, and I had it 3-4 months before I opened it before the holidays. I’m still using it (it lasts a long time!), and it’s fine. If the product doesn’t come bad to you, then you should be able to use it for months, and it wouldn’t go bad. I like to use this before bed – I take regular hand moisturizer and add a small amount of this to it. It makes the moisturizer more emollient, but not as greasy as the Cream is on it’s own. (It also makes your hands super shiny!) Hope you get a chance to try it!

That makes sense! I have purchased some from this same brand in the past and haven’t had any issues with it. I really do like it. A little goes a long way!

I don’t get Petit Vour any longer — got a few too many natural deodorants when I was subscribed. Sometimes I think subscription boxes are sending out older products, though, that are closer to expiration dates or in old packaging (like the round Nails Inc. bottle I saw in one of your recent reviews, which is over a year old). Not saying PV is doing that or not, but it is a possibility. Whereas if you bought this at Target or something, it would probably be new.

I tried to look it up using the batch code on the jar, but couldn’t find anything on S.W. Basics codes. I totally agree that sometimes subscription boxes will include an older style package, label or bottle. They probably get a great deal.

My box arrived today. I don’t recall the SW Basic Cream having a strong shea butter scent when I received it in the past box. This time the scent is too strong.

    1. Jennifer

Yeah, I for sure don’t recall it smelling like this!

I was so excited when I saw the S.W. Basics cream spoiler for this box a few weeks ago, and now that it’s here I’m disappointed that mine also has a weird smell – I think “farmyard” is an accurate way to describe it! I’ve never used this product before, so I don’t know what its normal scent is like, and while I’ve used products with lactic acid and/or urea that often have a funky smell, that doesn’t pertain to the listed ingredients in this S.W. Basics cream. You mentioned you couldn’t find much info on batch codes, but out of curiosity, what was the batch code on yours? The last digit on mine is a bit faded, but it looks like it’s either 5308 or 530B.

Let us know if the company updates you on this! And thanks, as always, for your detailed reviews!

        1. Jennifer

Mine is 5308 as well! I will update when I hear something for sure!

The SW cream smells like hay and an old house. It doesn’t smell rancid, but not exactly pleasant to put on my skin. I like everything else.

  4. Kat

I just got my box today, the cream smells so bad! I’m going to reach out to Petit Vour to see if they can send me a replacement product.

  5. helenlam

I contacted Petit Vour, who said that the batch was manufactured in November so it shouldn’t be bad yet, but didn’t offer any resolution. So I then reached out to SW basics (hello@swbasicsofbk.com).They said it was a different batch of olive oil that caused the smell and are sending me a replacement jar once it’s back in stock next week.

The good thing is that the smell does dissipate (eventually after a while) after applying. But I definitely can’t use that on my face because of the smell. It does work great on the body!
