Kiwi Crate boxes are designed around fun themes and filled with all of the materials and inspiration for hands-on projects for kids ages 3-7. It was one of the first boxes I ever subscribed to and we still love it.
Kiwi Crate ships via FedEx Smart Post and generally takes about a week to arrive. All of my Kiwi Crate boxes (Kiwi Crate, Koala Crate and Doodle Crate) arrived together in one large box this month, as they have been lately.
The February 2016 Kiwi Crate theme was “Race Day”. The box included all of the materials to build and decorate balloon fueled race cars.
Step #1 Airbrush Art
The first step was to use Airbrush Art to decorate your race cars. We completely failed at this. I don’t know if it was the markers or our technique or what, but we could’t get it to work. We followed the instructions exactly, but could barely get any color on our paper. We tried all the different markers and nope. Not happening. We quickly gave up and decided we didn’t want to decorate our cars anyway.
Step #2 – Build Your Cars
Build You Cars included enough materials to make two cars – one orange and one blue. My 7 year-old worked on the orange one while I did the blue one. I thought it was going to be SO easy to fold these up and put them together, but it was not. My son did a better job on this than I did on mine. I think it’s because he read the directions and I didn’t. But we both figured it out.
We had such a great time racing our cars and trying to figure out what the best set up was for them. We switched wheel sizes, tightened the wheels, loosened the wheels, etc. We are still working on getting them to go in a straight line, but we’ll figure it out eventually! I want to mention that Kiwi Crate included extra balloons and rubber bands in the box which was much appreciated! One of my dogs really enjoys chasing the cars and trying to bite at the balloons, so we will be be needing those extras.

As usual, the explore! magazine includes puzzles, games, recipes, experiments, stories and additional activities relating to the theme. This month’s mag had a fun “Roll to Race” game and a neat activity using your Kiwi Crate box to make a car with no wheels.
