I have a 3 year-old and a 7 year-old and was pretty anxious to see how the books in the box would work for both of them.

In your first The Story Box you receive a parental guide that gives you details on how to use the books in the box with children of different ages.

The March 2016 The Story Box included the following items:

~Mustache Baby by Bridget Heos ($11.46): Our first book was Mustache Baby, which both my boys thought was hysterical. Each book includes an individual Parent Guide which gives information on why the book is loved by The Story Box, Language Concepts and Example Activities.

For my 3 year-old (aka Pre-Schoolers) the Language Concepts involved personas and discussing characters in the book and the personas they had.  Activities included using face paint to transform yourself into a variety of different personas.

The 7 year-old (aka Early Elementary) Langauge Concepts discussed compound words and a variety of vocabulary items.  The craft involved marking your own sword out of paint sticks, popsicle sticks and paint.

~Pirates Don’t Change Diapers by Melinda Long ($12.37): Pirates Don’t Change Diapers is by the same author as one of my children’s all time-favorite books – “Don’t Say That Word” so I knew this book would be fantastic.

The Pre-Schooler Language Concepts involved helping your preschooler to develop a deeper understanding of pirates by discussing the costumes, pirate ships and all of the assorted items one may expect to find on a pirate ship.  The Hands-On Activity was to make your own pirate attire including a hook with a plastic cup, an eye patch with construction paper and yarn and a treasure chest out of a shoebox.

The Early Elementary Language Concepts involved a lot of reading comprehension including a lot of questions about the Who, What, Where of the book.  The Activity was to make a pirate map of your own backyard!

Using Amazon prices, the books in The Story Box had a value of $23.83.  That, of course, doesn’t account for the value of the guides that go along with them.  I was impressed that this box not only provided a value (it’s hard to beat Amazon prices), but also a service.
