Koala Crate is from Kiwi Crate’s line of crates and is designed for preschoolers ages 3-4. The box includes all the materials and inspiration for projects related to a theme such as colors, transportation or safari. Crates are designed to give children exposure to new materials and new concepts that encourage hands-on learning and fun.
Koala Crate ships via FedEx Smart Post and took about a week to arrive. Sometimes they ship mid-month, and sometimes they ship closer to the end of the month.
It was super hot yesterday afternoon, so the kids and I stayed inside and did our Crates. W (my 4-year-old) did this Koala Crate, L (my eight-year-old) worked on his Kiwi Crate, and I did the Doodle Crate.
The June Koala Crate theme was Transportation and included three projects “Tire Track Painting”, “Rolling Ramp” and “City Streets”.
Project #1 – Tire Track Painting
The first project was Tire Track Painting. It was medium on the messiness scale, medium on the grownup involvement scale and involved “creating” and “discovering”.
I didn’t find this to be messy at all (it’s just water) and all I (the grown-up) needed to do was fill up the tray with water. W did the rest. The paper really is magic, though. After a while, the lines disappear, and the page is blank again! The box also included a paint brush for the magic paper, so we are going to use it to practice writing letters!
Project #2 – Rolling Ramp
Rolling Ramp was low on the messiness scale, low on the grown-up involvement scale and involved “discovering” and “communicating.”
W loves cars and ramps of all types, so this was perfect for him. He used not only the wooden truck that was included in the crate on this ramp, but also some Hot Wheels cars he had around.
Project #3 – City Streets
The third project (and our favorite) was “City Streets”. It was low on the messiness scale, medium on the grownup involvement scale and involved “exploring” and “creating”.
We have used tape on our floor to make tracks / roads before, and it is always a hit. Always! W had a great time driving around and following the roads signs. I was surprised, but even L wanted in on this and grabbed a car of his own to play with. We still have half a roll of tape left, so we’ll be able to do this again.
imagine! Magazine
As usual, the box also contained an “imagine!” magazine. It has puzzles, stories, games and other project idea relating to this month’s theme.
