Hamptons Lane curates an amazing monthly box of artisan foods, kitchen tools, and serveware for the food lover. Boxes are $47/month and are revealed at the beginning of every month. Boxes are created around a monthly theme, such as Southwestern Fiesta, Summer Cocktail, The Best of BBQ, Coastal Italy, etc. Unlike most subscription boxes, you can skip the box if it doesn’t interest you during the first five days of that month.

The kids and I were very excited to get our hands on this one.
The August 2016 Hamptons Lane theme was Homemade Ice Cream. The information card included product information and an assortment of recipes to try out (which we did). The contents of the box were as follows:
~Mini Ice Cream Maker by Zoku, Hoboken, NJ ($25.99): We have a Zoki Quick Pop Maker (we love it), so I was very very excited to try this out. You can make individual portions of ice cream, custard, frozen yogurt, gelato, sorbet, or sherbet in as little as 10 minutes. You do need to freeze the bowl for about twelve hours before you can start making ice-cream, though, so keep that in mind when planning your desserts.
~Sel Gris Caramel Sauce by CC Made, Berkeley, CA ($5): YES! This stuff is incredible. If you have never tried it, I highly recommend finding some and picking some up. It’s good. Real good. You can heat it up or try it straight from the jar. It’s creamy and has just the right amount of salt.
~The Jam Stand Strawberry Spread, Brooklyn, NY ($9.50): This reduced sugar spread works on toast, in PB&J or even in ice-cream!
~Madécasse Pure Bourbon Vanilla, Brooklyn, NY ($6.49): This vanilla is made from Bourbon vanilla beans hand-cultivated on the northeast coast of Madagascar. It’s rich and flavorful and smells amazing.
~Peanut Frittle by Newfangled Confections, Indianapolis, Indiana ($9.75): Not peanut brittle, peanut frittle! They are bite-sized and made with crunchy peanut butter, sugar, corn syrup and salt. That’s it! I may have tested them before we started on the ice-cream making and I found them delicious ;).
Ice Cream Making
We decided to make two of the ice-creams in the booklet. We made the Madagascan Vanilla Ice Cream and the Strawberry Ice Cream. It’s noted in the information booklet, but you do need to pick-up some supplies to make the ice-cream. We used sugar, heavy cream, whole milk and salt. We picked up some strawberries too, but they weren’t necessary.
Step #1 – Make your ice-cream. The first step is to mix all of your ingredients together and then chill (in the freezer) for about 30 minutes. I didn’t take any pictures of this stage because I was busy trying to make sure my kids didn’t make a mess ;).
Step #2 – Mix your ice-cream. The second step is to pour your chilled liquid (5oz at a time) into you Zoku. It comes with a special plastic mixing spoon that you use to scrap / stir the mixture around with. It takes about 10 minutes for everything to freeze, but while it’s freezing you just scrap from along the sides and stir it back into the liquid until there is no more liquid left.
Step #3– If you want to firm up your ice-cream, you can pop it back into the freezer for a few minutes (or you can eat it right away). We didn’t want ours to be so soft, so we put it back into the freezer.
~The Final Result: The freezer firmed our vanilla ice-cream up nicely. I think we left it in for about 20 minutes?
~Strawberry Ice-Cream: I think our strawberry ice-cream was in the freezer for less time than our vanilla, but it was still scoopable. The strawberry flavor wasn’t overly powerful, but you could tell it was strawberry ice-cream. I would have never thought to make ice-cream using jam, but it totally worked.
~Vanilla Caramel Frittle Swirl: We turned some of our Madagascan Vanilla Ice Cream into a Vanilla Caramel Frittle Swirl Sundae. The kids were all over this one. The vanilla ice-cream was amazing (it’s so rich) and then with the toppings? Incredible.
All totaled the August 2016 Hamptons Lane had a value of $56.73. That’s not a huge value, but this was such a fun box! We had a great time making ice-cream and already have plans to make more. We’ll just keep the Zoku in our freezer so we can make it whenever the mood strikes.
