Kiwi Crate boxes are designed around fun themes and filled with all of the materials and inspiration for hands-on projects for kids ages 3-7. It was one of the first boxes I ever subscribed to, and we still love it.
Kiwi Crate ships via FedEx Smart Post and usually takes about a week to arrive to me. My July Kiwi Crate boxes shipped super late, in fact, I didn’t get them until early August. Unfortunately, they didn’t send out any communication about the delay – I had to e-mail them to find out they had a sourcing issue. If a box is going to ship a week or more late, I think it’s only right that they send out an e-mail. I do think some people got their boxes on time this month, though.
L (my 8-year-old) worked on this one yesterday while his little brother (W) did his July Koala Crate.
The July 2016 Kiwi Crate theme was “Water Wheel”. The crate included three projects: Build Your Water Wheel, Put Water to Work and Create Splash Art.
The box included all of the materials necessary for each project in the kit. All we had to add was water.
Build Your Water Wheel
Build Your Water Wheel was low on the messiness scale and medium on the grownup involvement scale.
L literally had this thing built in 5 minutes. It would have taken me way longer to do it myself for sure. My only contribution to this was to blow up the little pool and to add water. I would have had to do pretty much all of it for my younger son though.
Put Water to Work
Put Your Water To Work was high on the messiness scale and medium on the grownup involvement scale. No real work required with this one – just testing and playing.
Ours worked! The goal was to turn the wheel (while pouring water through the funnel) and pull your boat. It worked perfectly and not only was L into it, but so was W. L tested it a few times and then moved on to the next project, but W wanted to do it over and over again. And then he just played in the water. LOL!
Create Splash Art
Create Splash Art was high on the messiness scale and medium on the grownup involvement scale. When they say it was high on the messiness scale, they were not kidding. OMG, I almost sprayed the little container of paint all over my house. It was very difficult to open. LOL!
Okay, so we pretty much loved these (once we got the ink open anyway). I did one and L did two. You put a little dot of paint on the circle in the picture and then blow with a straw. They turned out so cool! I want to do a million of these.
explore! Magazine
As usual, the explore! magazine includes puzzles, games, recipes, experiments, stories and additional activities relating to the theme.
Additional Play!
The instruction booklet gave some ideas for additional play, but W didn’t need any help deciding what to do. He got his cars out and just drove them around in the water with the boat. Totally loved it.
