BookCase.Club Review - December 2016

I was sent the “Thrill Seeker Case” which includes two handpicked Mystery/Thriller novels.  My box didn’t have an information card this month (the bookmark did have the items listed), but the following items were included:

~Mind of Winter by Laura Kasischke ($13.94): I am going to have to make sure someone is home when I am reading this because I was a little scared just reading the description!

From Goodreads
On a snowy Christmas morning, Holly Judge awakens with the fragments of a nightmare floating on the edge of her consciousness. Something followed them from Russia. Thirteen years ago, she and her husband Eric adopted baby Tatty, their pretty, black-haired Rapunzel, from the Pokrovka Orphanage #2. Now, at fifteen, Tatiana is more beautiful than ever—and disturbingly erratic.

As a blizzard rages outside, Holly and Tatiana are alone. With each passing hour, Tatiana’s mood darkens, and her behavior becomes increasingly frightening until Holly finds she no longer recognizes her daughter.

~Rooms by Lauren Oliver ($17.99): This book is an autographed copy! I am not sure how much extra value that adds, but I used just the Amazon price of the unsigned book.  I am going to start the other one first and then give this one a try!

From goodreads:
A tale of family, ghosts, secrets, and mystery, in which the lives of the living and the dead intersect in shocking, surprising, and moving ways

Wealthy Richard Walker has just died, leaving behind his country house full of rooms packed with the detritus of a lifetime. His estranged family—bitter ex-wife Caroline, troubled teenage son Trenton, and unforgiving daughter Minna—have arrived for their inheritance.

But the Walkers are not alone. Prim Alice and the cynical Sandra, long dead former residents bound to the house, linger within its claustrophobic walls. Jostling for space, memory, and supremacy, they observe the family, trading barbs and reminiscences about their past lives. Though their voices cannot be heard, Alice and Sandra speak through the house itself—in the hiss of the radiator, a creak in the stairs, the dimming of a light bulb.

The living and dead are each haunted by painful truths that will soon surface with explosive force. When a new ghost appears, and Trenton begins to communicate with her, the spirit and human worlds collide—with cataclysmic results.

All totaled I came up with a value of just over $30 for my December 2016 BookCase.Club.  That’s double the cost of the month and a great value!
