Boxwalla Food Box ships bi-monthly via USPS. Boxwalla boxes are made in India from tree-free handmade paper. The boxes are made out of cotton scraps, using the traditional art of paper-making that involves nine steps and takes several weeks. The handmade paper is then meticulously fashioned into the boxes that the goodies get shipped in.

Boxwalla Food Box boxes are always so heavy!

The December 2016 Boxwalla Food Box theme was “Wonder-food” Life and included the following items:

~Rum Toddy Toffee Dessert Sauce ($12): This sauce is a combination of buttered rum, spices, vanilla bean, chai tea and 100% pure maple syrup.  It can be used as a sauce on ice-cream, over apple pie or even in a cocktail.  I thought the sauce was so flavorful that having it with plain vanilla ice-cream was the way to go.  It is a little thin – almost like an apple sauce consistency?  Not a thick sauce at all.

~Zingerman’s Dark Chocolate + Crunchy Sugar Crystals + Vanilla Bean CollaBARation Bar ($9): This bar was amazing.  I have to have a little bit of chocolate everyday (I love it), and this was very satisfying.  It’s 70% dark chocolate with cocoa beans sourced directly from farmers in Mababu, Tanzania plus 30% organic cane sugar. It’s so rich that just a square is enough.

~Askinosie Chocolate Hazelnut Spread ($13): This spread has no additives, preservatives, or fillers.  My little one goes crazy for this on plain old bread.  It also makes for a delicious dip for fruit or as a topping on ice-cream.  The possibilities are endless.

~Ozuke Umeboshi Salted Paonia Plums ($12.99): These plums are “lovingly salted, fermented then low temperature dehydrated.”  I guess there was an issue experienced by some people with these plums and BOXWALLA issued a refund (in the amount of $12.99) to all subscribers as a result.  I read about them tasting “off” before trying them and opted not to try them myself.

All totaled the December 2016 Boxwalla Food Box had a value of about $47.  Subscribers did receive a refund of $12.99, but if you couldn’t eat the plums, that was a wash.  I’d like to see the value on here slightly higher, but this has never been a huge “value” subscription.
