Hamptons Lane Review - January 2017

Like just about everyone else, I try to clean up my eating as a New Year’s resolution, so I was excited to open this box.

Hamptons Lane Review - January 2017

The January 2017 Hamptons Lane theme was Clean Eating and included the following items:

~Amaranth by Manitou Trading Company ($6.40): Amaranth, as I have learned from this box, is a rich source of protein and is more easily digested than other seeds and grains.  It can be used in soups, stews, stuffed pepper or a power bowl.  I am fairly (okay a lot) boring and just had them in a chicken/veggie bowl in place of rice.  It was super filling and much more flavorful than I expected.  Now that B is back in town (so I have someone to share them with) I am going to try and make the Superfood Breakfast Bar recipe Hamptons Lane included in the booklet.

~Chia Seeds by Nuts.com (~$3): I know that chia seeds are an amazing superfood, but I am not generally a fan.  I will give them a try in the breakfast bars, but I am not one to sprinkle them on yogurt or in a smoothie.  I wish I were, though!

~Turmeric by Manitou Trading Company ($5.59): Turmeric has the potential for improving cognitive function, blood sugar balance, and kidney function, as well as helping with arthritis and certain digestive disorders.  You can use it in a smoothie (you could, but again I am not that daring) or mix it in a salad dressing (maybe) or use it as a run for chicken.  This is my preference and the “Amaranth Crusted Chicken Power Plate” might be a perfect recipe for me.

~Soom Tahini ($8.25):  This was a miss for me. It’s a paste made from roasted and pressed sesame seeds.  I’ll admit, I tried it alone and just didn’t think it was flavorful enough.  Maybe I need to try to use it in a recipe in place of cream to make it healthier and see what I think of that?

~Immersion Blender by Brentwood ($14.90): Eeek!  I saved the best for last.  As silly as it sounds I have always wanted an immersion blender.  They are always on those infomercials, and they are just as cool in person.

Hamptons Lane Review - January 2017

All totaled the January 2017 Hamptons Lane had a value of $38.14.  That’s less than the cost of the box and leaves me disappointed – even with my excitement about the immersion blender.  I’d like to have seen a special container to use the immersion blender in or even a serving dish for some of the included recipes.  I always like to see the value of the box at least equal the cost, and sadly that just wasn’t the case this month.

Do you like hummus? Tahini is the key ingredient in that.

My experience has been that every box selling for $47 is overpriced. The only boxes I’ve purchased recently were deeply discounted.
