Current Obsession: Sweet Potato Fries

A few weeks ago I ordered sweet potato fries with my dinner at a local restaurant. I don’t think I have ever had them before and I wasn’t sure if I would like them. And guess what? I didn’t like them, I LOVED them. Amazing. I have been thinking about them ever since. I walked by the fry freezer at my local fruit / meat market (kind of a high-end grocery store) and a lightbulb went off in my head. Duh, they sell pre-made ones. On a side note, has anyone actually made homemade french fries? I don’t exactly cook, although I almost made some spaghetti the other night, so I haven’t. But B would be up for the task I think. I do the grocery shopping and planning. And he cooks. Don’t feel bad for him. He likes it. If I cook any kind of meat, I end up cutting it into 8 million pieces while it’s cooking so I can make sure it’s cooked all the way thru.

Anyways, back to my fries. I bought some and brought them home to B to cook up. There was no brand selection involved in my purchase. The store had one brand and that’s the brand I got.

I’m also wondering if sweet potato fries are somehow better for you than regular fries? Anyone? I mean, clearly they are better than McDonald’s fries (which are more than fabulous with a giant fountain Diet Coke), but are they better than the average frozen fries? I’m interesting to see what people who really know about labels think!

We had an beautiful weekend here and it was only natural for B to fire up the barbecue and grill up some burgers.  Paired with the sweet potato fries and some fresh fruit, it made for the perfect pre-summer summer day meal!

Have you tried sweet potato fries?  I realize I am likely way late for this train and am guessing you all have been enjoying these for years without me!  What else am I missing out on??

We make homemade sweet potatoes fries all the time. Toss in a little olive oil and season — bake or roast in the oven — the smaller/thinner you cut them the more crispy they will be! Much more healthy than actual frying!

If you like spicy things you should try Alexia’s Spicy Sweet Potato fries, they’re great!

OMG…Jenny….I had them for the first time at the casino in Petoskey. Can you think of a better combo….gambling and sweet potato fries? Just one possible better scenario. I had a rewards coupon and I got my huge basket of sweet potato fries for free!

And I have made regular homemade fries at home myself. They are good. But there is a secret to getting them crispy and if I thought there was any chance of you actually making homemade fries at home outta actual potatoes I would share the secret. But somehow I dont think that is really gonna happen.

      But Bryan would make them!!!

Ohhh, that does sound like the perfect combo! I want to go there and gamble and eat sweet potato fries!!!

I love the Alexa sweet potato fries! You have to find the spicy ones…they aren’t really spicy but just have a little more flavor. I always have a bag in our freezer!

I need to try them! I had to dig around the freezer at the store just to find these. They must be very popular!

I love sweet potato fries! I just made some homemade ones a couple of days ago. I just peel and slice the sweet potato into cubes or wedges. Put a little olive oil in the pan and sprinkle with a little salt. Yumm!

You all have been holding back on me. Why is everyone in the world sitting home enjoying sweet potato fries but me??

I am ADDICTED to home made sweet potato fries! We slice them up (I like them a little thicker, hubby likes them really thin) toss them in a little olive oil, sprinkle some sea salt and cinnamon and toss them in the oven at 400 degrees. They take about 40 minutes (20 on each side) and they are AMAZING! They are way healthier than regular fries a) cause you’re not frying them b) because sweet potatoes have less carbs, fat AND calories than regular potatoes and c) they have all kinds of nutrients. Hope that helps, the premade ones are really good but I actually prefer the homemade ones (and I SOooo do not cook)

Ore-Ida has Sweet Potato Fries too, there was a $1 coupon for them in one the Sunday coupons and Ore-Ida did free coupons a few weeks ago on FB. I like them better than the Alexia kind, Alexia has spicy ones too, but they have a kick! They are pretty easy to make at home too, cut them up (the thinner and more french fry like the better), spread them fairly evenly on a baking sheet and drizzle oil over them. I normally add an assortment of spices and stick them in the oven at 400, baking times vary with how you cut the fries but seriously cook the crap outta them because the crispier they are the better, imo. Try the Ore-Ida ones next!

I got that free coupon and can’t wait to try them!!!

I love sweet potato fries! I think I first tried them at a restaurant too. We make them sometimes, but honestly sweet potatoes are such a pain to cut. Ugh. Maybe there is a trick to it that I don’t know. And we have a fryer, so when we’re really bad we deep fry them. Not as healthy but soooooo good!
