Basement Love

So I hear that not everyone has basements. I think I talked about it once before on my blog, but I am still in shock. I guess I understand why people don’t have them (flooding, etc.), but let me tell you, you are missing out.

We had a basement in the house I grew up in and we spent hours and hours playing down there. It wasn’t finished (i.e. it didn’t have drywall – just cement walls) but us kids never cared! It’s perfect because it’s out of the way and you don’t have to clean it up every day. Although I do anyways unless L wants to leave something out because I can’t stand a mess.

Our basement was finished (at our request) when we moved in and it’s one thing I’d totally recommend doing. We have a 1/2 bathroom down there too. It’s basically another living space down there (even though basements are never included in the square footage of your house). We play down there on way too hot summer days and it’s even better in the winter when you need to rid get of some extra energy! Lots of space to run around!

We do have a separate unfinished area in the basement for storage (without this, where would I store my 15,378 holiday storage bins?) and a theatre room. Not like the theatre rooms on cribs. Just a room with couches and a projector.

When L is older, we’ll turn the space into a game room with a pool table, etc. A place for L and his friends to hang out. And be loud!

Do you have a basement? If not, tell me where you store everything?? Our garage just cannot handle all the crap we own!

L made that painting himself...
We use every bit of space possible
A full view.
New IKEA bookcases. I totally love them.
Doors to the theatre room.
Inside the theatre room. No fancy theatre seats here. But those may be the most comfortable couches on earth. I have had them for 11 years, which is forever for me.

Spread the love

Wait. There aren’t basements on the East Coast either?? I am clearly sheltered.

OMG, WTF. B is wearing a shirt in one of those pics. Absolutely unacceptable. It’s August. He should be topless 24/7.

I really miss basements. We also had an unfinished basement growing up…I even remember roller skating in our basement among other awesome activities. Later we did finish it and made two bedrooms and a half-bath for my brothers and a huge TV area. I miss that. We don’t have nearly enough room in our house for storage and stuff. We converted our dining room into a play area (which would’ve been awesome in a basement) but it always seems so full! We already added shelving and other storage items in our attic for Holiday decorations. Our two-car garage can barely fit one car, so we are planning on building a loft above the garage door for more storage. . I really miss basements…especially when I see pictures like yours!!

No basements here in Texas! We cram all of our crap in attics. I remember visiting my great-grandparents in Indiana when I was little and they had a basement. It was SO creepy though. Very dark and very cold, they used to to store all their canned food.

Your basement is HUGE. Ours is much smaller. The main area is our theater room, there’s a finished laundry room, half bath and partially finished room that doubles as a play room on one half and storage on the other half. I would never buy a house (in Michigan at least) without a basement. I used to live in AZ – no basements there that I’m aware of. And not in FL either.
