Buddy vs. the Ducks

I’m not sure if I ever mentioned Buddy’s obsession with catching / stalking animals. He prefers birds, toads and mice, but he’s pretty much game for any type of animals he can find. Well anything that’s smaller than him anyways. He’s bit into a few toads in his day. Yep, more than one. “They” say that dogs will only try to eat toads once because they give off such a nasty taste when being attacked. Not Buddy though. He’s done it several times and will go back for more at every chance. I was worried that Buddy’s hobby (of trying to eat living creatures) could be dangerous, but our vet assured me that nothing in our local area could kill him and pretty much gave him the green light to keep hunting.

That brings us to up-north. Up there, Buddy is able to combine two of his favorite activities. Hunting and swimming. He is obsessed with trying to catch the ducks up there. And I am pretty sure they just laugh at him and only come by to taunt him. But this trip, Buddy got serious. He went duck hunting multiple times his trip and came this close to actually getting one. This close. The three ducks were standing right on the shore and Buddy was standing real still.  All of a sudden he jumped right into the middle of the ducks.  I’ve never seen them move so fast.  We were all cracking up.  He almost had one! Usually Buddy just jumps in the water and swims to try and catch them.  He usually comes back after he realizes it’s not happening.  But during one of his swims, he went farther than he’s ever gone before.  We actually had to call him to come back.  For a 9lb dog, Buddy does give them a run for their money sometimes.

It’s been said that no one has ever met a dog like Buddy.  And that is likely very true. He’s for sure one of a kind.  But I bet he’s not the only crazy one out there!  What unique things does your dog do?

Hilarious Buddy stories!! We had a yorkie growing up and she lived to chase squirrels. Before our yard was fenced in we would put her on a tether in the back yard and I swear those squirrels knew exactly how far she could run after them before she’d get yanked back by the tether. The would sit out there and taunt her. Poor girl. A couple years layer we did fence in our yard and we put in a doggie door at the back door so she could come and go at will. She would literally dive through the door when she saw a squirrel to chase. I was absolutely mortified when she actually DID catch a squirrel!! I don’t think it was fully grown, so it was at a disadvantage. Poor thing…it didn’t make it. I read somewhere that the original Yorkshire Terriers were bread to rid castles of rats back in the day. True or not, it would explain that deep-seated desire to “hunt” small critters!! 🙂

Buddy and those ducks were hilarious. I thought he was going to swim to the other side of the lake after them!
