October Mantry

After receiving the September Mantry Box (if you missed last month’s post, Mantry = The Modern Man’s Pantry), B was hooked. So when I got an e-mail about the October box, I signed up right away, even though it was $75. Yes, $75. But B works hard and doesn’t “want” a lot (not like I do anyways), so we got it.

I FB’ed Mantry a few days ago and asked about the October box. They provided no details other than it was shipping mid-month and would arrive by the end of the month. Umm, okay Mantry? I was kinda looking for a tracking number or something? I should have known better than expect specific details though. Men just aren’t into the details like woman are (*). I suspect B would have provided me with a similar answer. Maybe that’s why he likes Mantry so much? So I was totally surprised (and thrilled) when my Mantry box appeared in my mailbox two days later.

First look

The theme this month was “Bourbon Breakfast” (last month was “Born in the USA”).  I like a good theme and they did great with it.  Here’s what was in the box:

The information card

“You’re My Boy BLUE-Blueberry” Jam ($8.50 / 8oz): OMG, I love the name of this.  I don’t even really care if this is amazing or not.  The name cracks me up.  Any company this funny can do no wrong in my book.  It’s got whole blueberries in it and you can smell the bourbon in it.  Like the website says “this has all the fun of a boozy jam with none of the hangover.”  Loves it.

You’re My Boy BLUE-berry Jam

Bourbon Barrel Matured Maple Syrup ($24.95 / 450mL): I can’t say that I have ever had bourbon maple syrup before, but I am looking forward to it.  And at $25/bottle, it better be good.  The information card says that “Noble procures the highest quality Maple syrup from heritage sugar shacks in the ancient maple orchards of Quebec.” and then “the syrup is matured in charred American oak barrels…with just a hint of Tuthilltown bourbon”.  Sounds pretty d*mn fancy if you ask me.

Skillet Bacon Spread ($9.95 / 7oz): Bacon is everywhere these days (in fact, the information card says “….recently BACON has been shamelessly used to sell more, cheap low quality products than the cast of Jersey Shore…”), but it appears that this spread is more than a trend.  The owner of the Company sells this spread on the streets of Seattle from his restored Airstream trailer.  That’s even cooler than a food truck!  Business must have boomed because you can also buy this at Sur La Table now!  Talk about going mainstream.  I’d say B has picked up this spread no less than 5 times in the last 30 minutes and read the label.  He’s super into it.  I believe he will be sitting on the couch later eating this out of the jar with a spoon.

Skillet Bacon Spread

Grandma’s Biscuit & Pancake Mix ($6.50 / 16oz): This is the one product in the box that I am super excited about trying.  I love pancakes and believe that these will be delicious.  Now I just gotta get B to make them for me because I find it hard to make perfect pancakes.  Seriously.  How do people get them so perfectly round and browned?

Grandma’s Pancake & Biscuit Mix

Bourbon Barrel Aged Worcestershire Sauce ($6.50 for 5mL): And like the maple syrup, I have never tried bourbon worcestershire sauce.  I need to get out more, because I cannot find a bad review of this anywhere on line.  Mantry suggests that you use this to make a Bourbon Bloody Mary to knock back with your breakfast.  Not a bad idea at all!

I came up with a total value: $56.40 for the box.  Of course, that doesn’t include shipping, tax, or the value of the crate (which I seriously adore).  So while we didn’t get $75 worth of product, I do believe the box was worth $75.  I wasn’t as wowed as I was last month, but maybe that’s because I knew what to expect this month?  I do wish that they’d keep the cost of the box under $50 though.  Maybe as they get bigger and are able to order products at cheaper prices, they will be able to lower the price of the box.  Wishful thinking maybe?  But either way, we will order again next month.  I think Mantry day is one of B’s favorite days of the month around here!

Another look

If you are interested in signing up, click here to be added to their list. You’ll get an e-mail when the November box goes on sale (it’ll also tell you how much it is) and will let you sign up if you are interested.  I personally think this would be a perfect holiday gift for the guy in your life!

(*) Well B’s not anyways. And neither are most men I know. Stereotypical much?

Spread the love

I opted out this month. I’m kindof glad to since exciting but not as good as last months at least in things I think my hubby would actually like. I’ll see what the price is of next months and if around $50 then I’ll probably give it a shot. I want one of those crates. 😉

    Jennifer,

Thank you so much for the kind words and the insightful feedback.

    2 Hints:

The pancake mix is fresh milled to order, so make sure to keep the mix in the fridge to keep the premium quality!
    2) Tell B there is a great recipe using the bacon jam on the Mantry Facebook page and also an amazing recipe section on the Skillet Site (The spread is best served warm):

This looks like a great kind of subscription box! The crate is so cute and I want one now!

Too bad you don’t live closer because I have some stuff for you and I’d give you a crate too!

Got my email, but by the time I saw it they were all sold out!

I just want a crate, I will admit it. Although if my B had fancy tastes, this is quite the subscription box. Good score!

Wow! I felt bad that I kept getting a rockin box every month but my fiance didn’t. I am totally going to sign up for this for him, he loves to cook and loves trying new things! Thank you for the reviews!!!!
