Tuesdays Troubles

It’s time for another edition of Tuesday Troubles. I’ve said it before, but this should be named “things i’m annoyed / confused / want to complain about”, however I couldn’t figure out how to make any of those into a snappy title, so Tuesday Troubles it is. And yes, I do realize that these aren’t true “troubles”. I know these for sure could be defined as first world problems!

~So yesterday I’m reading the Parade section (you know the magazine that comes with the ads) of the Sunday paper (better late than never) and I come across this “Special Report” about some youth hormone. Hmm, interesting. So I read the entire “article” and then realize it’s an AD. See that writing in the right hand corner. WTF? Why on earth do magazines allow this?  Now I am not only never going to buy this little pill, I am going to be super annoyed every time I see that Parade magazine from now on.  UGH!

The “article”

~OMG, we must discuss last night’s season premier of the Bachelorette.  Does anyone else get as uncomfortable as me? Those introductions that the guys did last night?  SO awkward.  Ick.  I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t have even let the #hashtag or the fantasy suite guys in the door.  Fantasy suite dude was creepy and will be lucky to ever get a date, with anyone, again.  My early picks are the foreign soccer guy and the dad who bought his adorable kid.  But I am really still troubled by those intros.  Do they make them act stupid or do they do that all on their own?

~I have mentioned it before, but there is this kid at school that calls L “Baby Face”.  OMG it drives me batty.  L doesn’t care and kinda just knows that this kid is a jerk and doesn’t let it get to him.  Last week he told L that Mickey Mouse was “for babies”.  He must have asked L where he had been and then when L told him he was on a “Mickey Mouse Cruise”, he took the chance again to call L a baby.  Do you think this kid’s parents know he runs around calling other kid’s names?  I mean I think I would know if L did this.  I talk to the other mom’s in his class and I know they’d tell me.

~I still feel so out of touch from my trip.  Catching up from that (and then going away again for Memorial Day) has been a bear!  I am *almost* there though, so I am pleased.  But I haven’t gotten a chance to comment on anyone else’s blogs ;(.  I have been reading in google reader (I’ll miss you), but I haven’t commented.  I feel awful.

~What on earth does everyone do with books they have finished reading?  Save them?  Sell them?  Pass them along to a friend?  Do tell.  I feel like I am letting good books just sit because I’m not sure what to do with them.  Does anyone know of any places I can donate some chick-lit to???

That’s it from here for now! What’s troubling you today?

Argh! You should totally take it up with L’s teacher. (You have seen ‘This is 40’, cmon, what are we waiting for here?)
Read books… well, you can include them in your give aways. I am sure no one would mind a read copy unless it’s like Shades of Grey because you never know what happened around them… or on them. 😉 😉

We have a place here called Edward McKays that is a used book store and you can trade books in there for credit towards other books in the store. Check around, you probably have something similar in your area. I’ve gotten to a point where I do almost all my reading on my Kindle but before I made the switch I went to McKays all the time.

I was so let down by The Bachelorette last night. I don’t really like any of the guys and think most of them seem like jerks and from the previews of the season it seems like a lot of them are going to get into fights. And I have a weird feeling about that guy with the kid. Something seems not right. Unlike Desiree, I did not “see her husband in that room.”

    1. Jen

      @Jessica R.:

I think those “fights” they show are probably from some sort of group date where they are filming for something. Kind of like Brad’s season where they had that group date where he was running away from an explosion with one of the girls in his arms.

Google reader? Am I missing something?
A fun idea for books that I did with some of my pregnancy books that I knew I wouldn’t read next time I wrote my name, due date, actual arrival date, and baby name in the inside cover and passed them on to pregnant friends and asked them to do the same when they were done with them. I suppose you could do the same thing with other books, like put where you were on vacation when you read them, etc!

You could list your books on paperback swap. I think you earn credits to exchange for more books. Or donate them to your local library for their book sales. Newer releases always sell at those sales and the money goes to a good cause 🙂

Id liKe some suggestions for some good chick lit books! I need some new ones for an upcoming vacation!

  7. Katrina

Personally, I keep most of my books because I dream of someday having an entire massive room as a library in my house. It’ll never happen, but still 😉

If I wind up with a book I don’t want to keep, I post it on Paperbackswap.com – you post books you no longer want, other people request them, then you send them to them for free and get credits you can use to request books from other people.

Oh no…my kid is that kid. My youngest son is 3 and he calls everybody “baby”…he doesn’t discriminate. He calls me baby when I won’t let him do something he wants and my response…”I wish I was a baby”. If I fix something he doesn’t like for dinner he says “that is for babies” I can not for the life of me break him of that habit. Now my oldest is 4 and has just recently come home from pre-school calling his little brother (and me a few times) anything with the word butt in it..ie butthead, buttface..you get the picture. I haven’t said any of those words since I was maybe 6, so those are a few that he didn’t get from me. I don’t think he’s a bully about it. I just think it’s a bunch of little boys saying butt and laughing hysterically. He thinks his friends are the coolest things ever, so getting him to stop saying it has been hard.

I sell back books at cash4books.net if I don’t pass them along to friends. You can donate books to nursing homes and hospitals. Goodwill also will take them.

  10. Pattie

Chick Lit – love it!! What about donating to a local womens shelter or the local hospital may accept for donations of reading material for their patients.

  11. I recently donated a couple bags of books to the Friends of the Library for their used book sale.
Maybe your library has the same 🙂

I taught school for 5 years and the one thing I learned was that the child who is picking on others is most likely telling his parents that he is getting picked in worse. Also, the kids parents might be oblivious or think the kid is an angel. I can’t tell you how many parents I had that were such enablers. It was everyone else’s fault. You might want to talk with the other parents and see if this is happening to their kids too. I know school is almost over but it might benefit to have a conference with the teacher next year to address your concerns if they will be in the same classroom.

  13. sara

I’d either give the books to my mom or take them to half price books. Now that I have a Kindle I don’t know what to do with them since I can’t sell them.
Um, first of all yay for L not letting the other kid get to him. But still that’s just mean and I’d hope that the other mom knows about it. Maybe no one wants to tell her? I’m so not ready for that when Mackenzie is in school. Do you get involved? Ignore it? Talk to the other mom? It’s stressful to me just thinking about it! And what’s that kid talking about, I love Mickey Mouse and get extra excited that Mackenzie seems to love him too! :o)

  14. christine

feel free to send me a box of books!

  15. Krystal

That boy in L’s class, sadly, is probably being bullied at home by a sibling or parents. You know, those annoying parents who tell their kids what they can like to do and whatnot…not like you who lets L enjoy whatever it might be like My little pony. They probably tell him what’s for girls, babies,…not him about things he choices and he feels shamed and bad about himself and them passed the bullying on. Just a guess…but I am a child and family social worker so it’s a good one 🙂 lol

  16. Amanda

I collect the Alex Cross series by James Patterson, but I sell all my other books on amazon. If I can’t get at least $5 from selling it, I donate to a school, shelter, Salvation Army, or put it on fb to see if any fb friends want it 🙂 my hubby makes fun of me for selling them, but I’ve made back a ton of money! It makes me not want to buy books for my kindle, lol!

Well I can say I officially feel old- last night I was looking for something to watch, and there was nothing ‘normal’ that I watch on, so I turned on Bachelorette—low and behold, a guy I graduated high school with is one of the bachelors! I have never watched the show, but it seemed quite creepy and odd… He was one of the ‘popular’ guys in high school, so it makes me wonder why he would have to go on a show like that to find a spouse???…It also made me feel kind of good because I was not ‘popular’ and I am married 🙂 Just goes to show that high school does not really matter in the real world of relationships!

Vacation always throws things off! Hopefully you’ll be back in your routine soon 🙂

I’d talk to the teacher about the name calling. Not cool for little kids. Expected maybe in middle school but not preschool/kindergarten! that crap needs to be nipped in the bud.

RE: books. If the are good, I try to think about who would benefit from it. My mom and I share books a ton. In fact I “stole” 4 from her house yesterday. She was gone, and hopefully won’t notice before I return them 😉 Otherwise we have a giveaway box here at work, or I just send them to the used book store when my mom takes the kids to pick out books.

  19. Debbie

about the kid, most parents do not know what there kids does or the kids gets it from them. about the books, I sell my to a second hand store sometimes for money or credit. or you can donate them to a senior place, the libary and thirft stores. Hope that helps.. Have a great one.

  20. Rose D.

Donate chick-lit to me! Seriously, maybe hospitals? People going through chemo or dialysis might like it. I sell the books I won’t read again to a used bookstore.

  21. Jen

I’m a big Bachelor franchise fan and bummed that Bacjelor Pad won’t be on this summer, but am happy that The Bachelorette is at least back on for the next several weeks. I thought several of the guys were creepers. I’m a huge fan of spoilers of the show, but don’t spoil it for those who don’t want to be spoiled. Isn’t the guy with the kid the guy they show in previews that it seems like no one likes and he’s a jerk? I could be wrong and I hope I’m wrong. His kid was a cutie although, I don’t quite get the relationship between him and the child’s mom. Didn’t he say they were just friends? Did they date at one time or were they just friends who decided to have a kid together? I’m not sure who my favorites are yet. In seasons past I’ve picked a favorite right away, but this time it seemed like there were too many different types of guys for me to judge.

As for books, typically I read on my Kindle so I can’t do anything with those books once I’m done. With actual paper books, I had done everything you have mentioned. I have sold them at used book stores, donated them to the library, passed them along to friends and have even sent them to troops overseas.

That kid in L’s class sounds like he has issues. I wonder what else he does and how big of a bully he’ll turn out to be when he’s older.

  22. carol

I’ve moved over to the nook and Kindle but before that I shared them with my friend who then shared them with her mother. Others I brought to the doctors office and left there ( along with magazines ) I also leave them at the library who sells them at book sales to raise money. If you have kid books those can go to the children’s school. Hope that helps.

  23. Jen

All the books that get finished here make the rounds to all the friends that are interested, and then get donated to the Township library our Mt. Clemens library. Tax write off. 🙂

  24. Kellie

I vote for a book swap. I have FOUR bookcases full of books, three of which are probably what i would classify as chick-lit or I like to think of as summer beach reading. I went CRAZY last year when borders when out of business and got like 100 books. Seriously, like 100 books.

  25. Jen

I used to read the parade section all the time! Loved it.

  26. Courtney Lane

OMG! It was painfully awkward to watch!!! I was grimacing the whole time. “Who are these creeps?!?” #hashtag and the Magic guy had me LMAO though. I sorta liked the ER doc, sad to see him go. He was weird but cute in a Johnny Depp sort of way! And I don’t remember Desire’s ass being so voluptuous! LOL They have to be making some of these people do this stuff!

About the “baby-face” bully kid. My son likes My Little Pony and when we went to the mall a few weeks ago they were featuring My Little Pony at Build-a-Bear. He wanted Rainbow Dash so that’s what he got. He took it to school and a few of the kids (boys) picked on him right when we walked in the door with it. (they bring an animal each week for nap time, etc.) Anyway, this one kid says “Ew, Rainbow Dash is for girls!” and to my surprise my son replies with “How do you know her name then?!” Obviously none of the kids got it put his mom and all the other teachers did. Kids can be brutal. I would want to know if my kid was being mean to someone for sure.

    1. Courtney Lane

@Courtney Lane: Oh! Look for a woman’s shelter in your area for the books I bet they would love some reading drama! I saw someone throw away a whole box of books once and almost died. I picked the box up and took it to the Genesis shelter here (for battered women and children) and they were soooooo happy!

  27. Erika

I sell books back at cash4books.net. They even pay the shipping and give you $$ for your books.

  28. Rebecca

L is so great at handling that situation. Letting it roll off his back, is probably the best thing he can do. Part of me thinks the mom should be told what her kid is doing, the other part of me thinks that could be a very akward conversation.

As for books, I keep the books I love and lend them to friends and family. I end up rereading a lot of them. For books that I know I won’t read again, I typically donate them. I tend to give them to the Friends of the Library, since I really enjoy their book sales!

  29. Mrs. L

Glad to see I wasn’t the only one as I started to read the article in Parade too before realizing it was an ad.

Any book I buy, I give to my Aunt to read. Those that she gives back (that don’t get passed on to her friends) I give to the Senior housing that is near me or give to my girlfriend who sells them in her garage sale. If at any point I still have a book left, it goes to the Salvation Army. I used to keep books I read before I realized that there were just too many. I’d rather save that space for my cookbooks…which I have a lot of…which I NEVER give away…you have to pry cookbooks from my cold dead hands before I’ll part with them.

  30. Sonya

I have massive stacks of books and two very tall, very full book shelves in my living room. I am an avid reader of just about any genre and I hate to get rid of the really good ones. I may read them again. I use paperbackswap.com to list my books for swapping. I have started purchasing more on my iPad from Amazon using the Kindle app. You could try donating to a women’s shelter.

  31. Shannon Dew

I just cleaned out all of my old books and took them to Half Priced Books. I only got like $17 for a giant diaper box full of books but it’s better than nothing and better than them taking up room on the shelves!

  32. Val

I’m so glad I skipped over that Parade article! I was just about to read it and then decided that it looked stupid.
I call my dog Babyface, but it sucks that he’s being called that by a peer. Karma…. (is it bad karma to wish bad karma on a child?!)
My friends and I just pass books around to each other – some we get back, some we tell each other to pass them along to someone else or donate. I rarely buy books though, because my friends mom does constantly and gives them to her. If they are good condition, sell to a used book store for credit.

  33. Alexia561

So glad to hear that L isn’t letting that bully get to him! As for what to do with your books, the other answers are all great! I list some on paperbackswap.com, sell some on BN.com, give some away in contests, and donate some to Goodwill or the Salvation Army. Still have too many books and not enough bookcases!

  34. As

Ohhhhh Batchelorette! I am so embarrassed that Fantasy Suite guy was from NC! Granted, its not technically my “home state” … but still. Ugh. I was glad she had a big enough set to send him home [even though I still wish they had used Lindsay Yenter as the B and not Des.] I like the dad … and the shirtless dude was really good eye candy [I also didn’t watch long enough to see who got sent home … ] but he was really trying too hard to impress a girl who clearly wasn’t that impressed by his muscles.
