Poll: How Much Does The Tooth Fairy Leave?

Sorry, there are no polls available at the moment.
This isn’t a problem we have here yet, but it’s certainly something I, oops I mean, the Tooth Fairy wants to be prepared for. From talking to other moms it appears that the Tooth Fairy is all over the place in what she leaves. The kid next door gets $20! That is NOT happening here that’s for sure.  Kids have a lot of teeth and they would get quite spendy.  But I’ve heard of $1 just as often as well. I was thinking two dollar bills would be where it’s at. They have the cool factor and would be super special because you NEVER see them used.  I could tell L that only the Tooth Fairy has access to them ;). I’m guessing the Tooth Fairy can get some of these at a bank or have them order me some?

So I want to know, what does the Tooth Fairy leave your kids?  Or what did she leave you when you were a kid?  I can’t wait to hear the answers to this one!  Ohh, and what does the Tooth Fairy do with teeth.  Fingers crossed they are thrown away and not made into a necklace or something because I find teeth to be very gross once they are no longer in your mouth!

I use to give my kids $2 for small teeth and $3 for molars in quarters… they loved it, and if I forgot or they didn’t tell me about the tooth I would just say that the tooth fairy is on vacation and would e-mail me when she got back.. The susan B $1 coins are nice to. and all the banks have them…

  2. Danielle

I used to have a customer who always gave the waitresses $2 bills….and on special occasions $2 coins!! I have a shitload….now maybe I have a use for them. Lol

  3. Lyndie

I don’t have kids but when I was a kid the tooth fairy left us silver dollars. I still have all mine.

I did some research and found out we lose 20 baby teeth from like 6 – 12 years old… so I figured $5 times 20 = $100 over 6 years… I can handle that. I wanted to tell you, once when I was little I lost a tooth at a restaurant… and then FORGOT it there. I was so upset the tooth fairy wouldn’t give me money. I can’t imagine what that bus boy or waitress thought when they found it. Oh, and I like the $2 bill idea!

I LOVE the $2 bill idea! I think I will ask the bank about that as well. For the tooth fairy, you know. We got a beautiful Tiffany box for our daughters baptism with the tooth fairy on it. I can’t figure out if we’re supposed to store teeth in it or put teeth in it to give to the tooth fairy?! It’s so confusing. I think I will keep a couple just to creep out my kids when they’re older 🙂

LMAO! If some creepy mom is collecting her kids teeth in a box I will lose it!

Wilito hasn’t lost any teeth yet either but he is dying to. He has a friend that is 4 and has lost 5 teeth already?!?

Anyway, that $2 bill idea sounds great! I was thinking one dollar and maybe a gold dollar coin, too? I saw the tooth fairy receipts and thought those were really cute, too!

  7. Lisa S

We gave the kids $1 but it was always the gold dollar coins so it would be special since you usually don’t see those often.

    1. Susan

@Lisa S: We do the $1 gold coins as well. I got some at the bank, so the tooth fairy is stocked up.

I think keeping the first tooth, front tooth, and first big tooth would be a good idea. There are so many teeth, but I think these are the special ones.

  9. Tabitha

$20 a tooth! Seriously?! Obviously the tooth fairy next door to you is a balla! LoL! My child is not yet at the tooth losing age either so I’m excited to see all the responses. I’m kinda diggin your idea of the $2 bill. Although I almost feel like I wouldn’t want her to spend it later. We have a collection of $2 bills right now just stashed away…don’t know what for. Perhaps that will now be for the tooth fairy…

How about root canals. Shouldn’t I get money for root canals?

I think the idea of a two dollar bill would be good. Or maybe if just a dollar, leave one of those golden dollar coins?

  11. Stacey

We use to get a ?1 coin per tooth! I have no idea what happened to my teeth, I’ll probably found me mum kept them in a box or something!

My mom actually orders the $2 from the bank. Wells Fargo and other bigger institutions are more likely to do it. I work at a credit union and we don’t order them because of the quantity that they require to do so- we just don’t have a demand for them.

  13. Jill

Hi Jennifer, I used to work at a bank, and I know you usually can just walk into a branch for the 2 dollar bills. As for the teeth, I really hope the tooth fairy throws them away. I also have an issue with teeth.

  14. Tasha

My family usually leaves $1. The best was when my tooth fell out during the day so I had to carry it around with me in a little cup everywhere we went because we weren’t at home. Every friend of my dad’s gave me $1 for my tooth. I can’t remember how much I got but I was pretty happy that my tooth fell out then! My dad actually made sure I never believed in any kind of magical…well, anything. He told me he was Santa, the tooth fairy, the Easter bunny, and other stuff I can’t think of. So I would just give my tooth to him.

I don’t have kids though I’ve heard $20 followed by, well, we got to the ATM and then didn’t have time to break the bill. 🙂 I was searching online and found a number of printable certificates. I suppose it doesn’t have to be money at all. It could also be a way to save some sub box gifts that the Fairy just happens to tote and deliver.

My hubs (E) is in the Navy, and he always collects foreign currency when he’s gone. My girls get $1 per tooth…and some type of foreign coin or dollar too…as a keepsake. Cause, ya know…the tooth fairy can go all over the world like Santa. And…in what has turned out to be a huge a huge pain in my a$$ with my oldest–I sprinkled “fairy dust” (aka loose glittery gold eye shadow) on her windowsill and pillow for her first tooth and now I have to do it every time–and it’s been passed on to my youngest and I almost forget every time and I’m about out of the container and where am I going to find more?!?

  17. Pattie

Our Tooth Fairy also left special notes about brushing and flossing! My daughters looked forward to the notes more than the money I think!

  18. Sonya Byrd

I no longer have that issue here, as my babies are grown. When they did lose teeth, the very first tooth was special and they got $20.00, every tooth there after only got $1.00.

As for the teeth…………Saved the 1st one, garbage the rest.

  19. Maryann T

Weeeeeeell when I was little I’d only get maybe 50 cents to a dollar. You could do 2 dollar bills, should be able to request them at the bank and if they don’t have them I’m sure they could tell you where to get some. Or you could get some dollar coins! I always loved looking at my moms silver dollars when I was little, but she collects all different types of coins. Should be able to tell you where to obtain some at the bank as well.

As for the teeth, my ‘tooth fairy’ kept them in a small bag in a keepsake box, but if your tooth fairy finds that unsavory you could always throw them out. That’s going to be a personal preference.

  20. Janaya

My mom was the type of person who kept EVERYTHING, so for some crazy reason she kept my teeth! We moved while I was in high school and while helping her pack up her room, I found them in a jar! ALL of them!! Yikes!!

  21. Jenny

We haven’t had this either but some of my other friends with 5yr olds are starting. I’ve been thinking like $2 bills too or maybe a hot wheels car or lego mystery pack. I still remember for my first one I got a barbie doll so maybe I’ll try to make the first one special too.

  22. Karen

The very first tooth, the tooth fairy left $10. Only because she was not prepared & didn’t have anything smaller:) The two front teeth got $2 each and everything else $1. A little trick if you don’t have a special tooth pillow or box, put the tooth in a ziplock & put the money in a ziplock. It’s much easier to swap them out that way, and it’s easier to find the tooth.

  23. Susan B

In our house the first tooth lost was the most expensive. They got $5 and a note that said Congratulations and explained her rules(tooth in baggie under pillow only, no trying to trick the tooth fairy, on list for next night after 6pm). Each tooth lost after that was only given $1. We also had a rule that the tooth fairy only comes if you lost your tooth before 6pm, anytime after that was on the next night list. (learned that lesson the hard way when I had 4 kids under 9 and their father was deployed and I had no cash)
I do like the $2 bill idea. They are hard to find and I hoard them when I find them.

  24. Jessika

I never got any money from the Tooth Fairy growing up. I love to $2 bill idea! It something that they will remember and may even keep and not spend.

  25. Greta

I have saved all of my kids, but they kind of disenegarate or disappear(they get smaller) over time

  26. Sara

My niece received 10 bucks for her first tooth with a special note from the tooth fairy. For all her other teeth she gets $1. I still have time before my little guy loses his teeth but I plan to do the same.

  27. mari

This just happened to me and I was unprepared. I frantically texted a couple of moms and got this consensus: $5 and a note for the first tooth and $1-2 for subsequent teeth at least in our neighborhood. One mom does a gold coin! Anyway, his first tooth and second tooth came out on the same day, so he made out with $10.

  28. Jen

My kids got a $2 bill for the first tooth they lost and then $1 for every other tooth.

  29. Sarah

My daughter is 15 now so we’re past these days, and I don’t know what’s “normal” now, but for us she got $5 for her first few teeth (generally the front teeth), and a dollar or two per tooth after that. It always depended how much cash I had on days a tooth was lost, but definitely bigger amounts for those first/front teeth!

  30. Arlette

When leaving money from the tooth fairy my mom use to spray the dollar with glitter hair spray and tell me it was fairy dust! I have kept this going i tink its the cutest thing ever.

  31. Rachel

Goodness, I have a very tardy tooth fairy sometimes, so she has to give a little extra if the poor kiddos (I have 2 at the tooth loss stage) have to wait on her (she sometimes gets hung up in France or some other faraway destination). I don’t remember what the tooth fairy gave my son for his first tooth, but my daughter happened to get $20 because the tooth fairy was unprepared (unprepared AND tardy, can I get a different fairy over here, please?!?). Most of the time they get a dollar or two–it’s always a surprise what she leaves and that is part of the charm. Once she was terribly busy and terribly late and so she left a little note of explanation as well as the money and a small gift.

  32. I only received a $1 for my teeth, one time I got a $20 but that was because I stayed at my grandparents house! As for my teeth, my mom kept them all… They have since split into two due to age and I’m sure being out in the dry air. I’ve been meaning to ask my mom if she still has them or if she has finally thrown them away. I’m not sure what Tim and I will do with Delaney’s teeth, I’m sure we will figure this out when we get there!

  33. Lynsey

I want to do the gold dollar coins with C, I think he will love that and think its treasure! LOL! I also saw online a mom put a smudge of glitter on her sons cheek and when he woke up told him the tooth fairy kissed him, I am totally steeling that idea!

  34. Janice

My daughter’s received $2 bills for their first lost tooth and silver dollars thereafter.
