My August Homegrown Collective box arrived a few days ago and since I was totally spoiler free (this rarely happens – with any boxes) I couldn’t wait to check it out.  The Homegrown Collective includes seasonally appropriate, professionally curated products that deliver the satisfaction of living a more self-sufficient & sustainable lifestyle to your doorstep each month.

The Box

The Homegrown Collective ships via Priority Mail and arrived in the stated two days from CA.  They always ship at the end of the month, so you will receive your box the following month.  Like I got the August box in September.  It wasn’t late, it’s just how they ship!

First Look

The Homegrown Collective ships a lot of fragile items, so they use a lot of packaging materials.  Everything was snugly in place and I don’t think anything moved at all.

The Information Cards

The August Homegrown Collective theme was “superfood – detoxifying – antioxi-…docious” and included everything you needed to make alfalfa sprouts, green tea and lavender bath soak and dark chocolate pomegranate wonder cups.  Here’s a breakdown:

~Alfalfa Sprouts: I do not like sprouts (I know they are super amazing for you, but I just don’t love them.  However, I know that L is going to love this little project, so I got it started.  You have to let the seeds soak overnight, remove the water, rinse them 2x/day, etc. to get them to grow.  L is all about gardening and growing things, so this is awesome. And heck, maybe he will even like sprouts?

~Green Tea & Lavender Bath Soak: This one was super easy and involved simply mixing lavender and green tea!  When you are ready for the bath, you’ll add a cup of epsom salt to a HOT bath, let it sit and then put the green tea/lavender bag under the hot running water.  It’s suppose to sooth your body, mind and spirit while drawing our harmful toxins and healing wounds.  I can’t wait to have B test this next time he takes a bath.  Heck after this crazy back to school week, I might try this!

~Dark Chocolate Pomegranate Wonder Cups: OMG!  These are amazing.  Amazing.  I don’t know much about pomegranate and was surprised to see that it’s a fruit of seeds basically.  After removing the seeds (which isn’t as hard as I expected) I put them in the bottom of the cups and then added melted chocolate (done on the stove) and a dash (okay a lot) of salt.  I had some left over chocolate and there was no way I was letting it go to waste, so I grabbed some more cups and just made plain chocolate  / salt cups.  Umm, they are all delicious.

As usual, I didn’t do a value calculation for the August Homegrown Collective box since it would have been too difficult.  But once again, I feel like it’s worth the price tag.  The Homegrown Collective comes up with things I’ve always wanted to do and some things I’ve never even realized I wanted to do (like these).  And I always feel like I learned something in the process which is awesome.  And, of course, the box is even cheaper if you buy a 6-month ($39/month) or 12-month ($35.75/month) subscription!  If you are interested in subscribing, or just want to learn more, click here.  And don’t forget to use the code “RAMBLIN10″ to save $10 off your first box!!!

And just like last month The Homegrown Collective wants to give one of you guys a Homegrown Collective Box!!  All you gotta do is enter in Rafflecopter below and you’ll be entered to win the August Homegrown Collective Box so you can be on your way to making some wonder cups in your kitchen!

  5. Maddy

    Something with incense.

  6. Jenny

This is so hard since I know there are so many things to make out there that I have no idea what I’d like to see. I see everyone making all these handmade things like soap and stuff and I think the store is just so easy. I do really love the idea of homemade items and the pomegranate chocolate sounds awesome so maybe some more candy type items.

  7. Ally

More items like the alfafa sprouts. I love the idea of growing your own food… especially if it doesn’t require a garden/backyard.

  8. This looks soooo good. My mom used to grow sprouts for salads and sandwiches and I LOVE pomegranate! I’m going to have to check this out!

  9. Karissa

I’m gonna die, definitely, if I don’t ever try some of these pomegranate chocolate cups. I’d like to see more like that!

I would lovee more bath stuff

  16. Mandie

LOVING all of your posts, Jen! Thanks for the unboxings and all of the giveaways.

To answer the prompt–I think it might be interesting to see regional Homegrown boxes. Something like an Ozarks box that uses Askinosie chocolate (<3) for a project (and by that I mean more Askinosie please). Not sure how it would work, but it could be interesting.

It might even be cool to see a project to make your own Geocache in one of these boxes (http://www.geocaching.com/).

  17. Jessika

I think a box with what you need to make your own cleaning wipes would be nice.

  18. Toni

I grew chia seeds when I was little and they grow like crazy! We had so many we didn’t know what to do with them all. Im sure your son is going to be happy with his project : ). Im not sure what would be good for a future project, I think that’s part of why homegrown collective is such a great idea.

  19. Marsha

I would love to see a box that focuses on canning and putting food by.

  20. Amy Ballou

    more chocolate products

  21. Lauren

Ok it’s not like I don’t have enough soap from Lush already, but I’d love to see a soap making box! Candles too! Basically anything that smells good, haha.

  22. Ruby Yoshi

I’d like to see a project for handmade soap

  23. Blessie Nelson

I would like to see natural ginger and cardamon tea bags in the future box.

I would love to see a fall beauty diy box using ingredients such as apples or pumpkin!

  25. christina

  27. JT

I’d like to see more lotions/lotion bars 🙂

  28. Dawn

The bath salts and the candy cups both seems like great idea’s that you could use over again but make them fresh by changing up the ingredients.

  29. Catherine Faulkenburg

I would love to try this box!

    1. Catherine Faulkenburg

Whoops, in the future, I think it would be awesome to have the stuff to make felted dryer balls.

I want to see scented body cream or a nice face cream!

  31. Tara

Anything like those pomegranate cups omg those look amazing!

  34. Meg Mc

I really like the food items, and would hope to see some more in future boxes!

  35. Ace

This sounds cool if only for the sprouts and the pomegranate. Those are two of my favorite things to eat, I like to eat them with garlic salt and lemon. The Greek mythology behind pomegranates is kind of cool too, Persephone is said to be stuck in Hades for 7 months out of the year because that is how many seeds she ate while she had been kidnapped down there and the seasons correlate to that.

  36. Jean

How about an anti-oxidant Chia Pet (JK!!! LOL – my kids laugh at those ads every holiday season – so funny)! I would love to see a small herb garden done that kids can help with. They LOVE seeing the growth process and being able to actually use what they grow is an awesome time line to go thru with a child of any age!

  37. Kim Kjerulf

Loving the pomegranate with chocolate. Looks good, hope they taste as good as they look.

  38. Amy P

Something utilizing milk (like goat’s milk soap!) or almond oil.

  39. Riann

Maybe organic essential oils to blend a signature perfume?

  40. Jamie McNeely

A few ideas that would be fun to see:
-A box with household cleaners or beauty products (laundry detergent, liquid soap, toothpaste, shampoo, body wash, chapstick, etc.)
-An herb garden with recipes (edible or otherwise) using the herbs
-Candy making kit (chocolate, hard candy, taffy, caramels)
    -Candle making kit

  41. Crystal Gregg

    Dark chocolate covered pomegranate.
Dark chocolate covered fruit & nuts should be a staple in every box.

  42. miranda

I would love to see canning products

  43. gary

Something similar to chap stick would be good

  44. Kate L

hand scrub, lip balm, kombucha, kitchen herbs, diy earrings

  46. Lindsey

Love the idea of this box! Some homemade beauty or bath products would be delicious.

  47. Mackenzie

I’ve been wanting to try them for a while but they’re a bit over my budget… I loved last month’s coconut theme, and I would really be dying for an autumn ‘all about fall’ theme that includes items such as a pumpkin face mask, apple soap, pecan exfoliating scrub, something along those lines for a Sept/Oct box! xo, Kenzie

  48. Vanessa

    Soaps or scrubs.

  49. Jean

I would love any kind of candles or soaps!

  50. Sam L

I would love to see more baking products!

  51. Karen

Been wanting to try this subscription out for quite some time, would be wonderful to win one!

  52. Katie

  53. jacque

I would love this!! Especially the bath soak!

  54. Caroline

    I love DIY bath products!

  55. Liz

I’ve been eyeing this box for a couple months now… It would be awesome to win since Hubby has banned me from subscribing till the holidays. :'(

But I hope I can do it for the fall season b/c I have a feeling those boxes will be a ton of fun (like maybe a pumpkin themed box, yum!)

  56. Libby Sawyer

I want to see natural cosmetics or cleaning products!

  57. Jocelyn Dunlop

I’d love to see them focus on one super versatile item again, like they did with the honey and coconut.

  58. Jill

I would love to see a herb garden kit in a future box!

  59. Samantha Hunter

More items such as candle making I thought would be fantastic

  60. Shannon

Oh man! I’m not even sure what I would like to see. I think a lip gloss or lotion would be really cool. I also like the idea of cleaning products that don’t involve vinegar.

  61. Elise

I just discovered your blog when I was looking for reviews on Birchbox and have been sitting here for over an hour reading old posts 🙂 The Homegrown Box looks really interesting – you’re opening my eyes to so many new subscription boxes!! 🙂

  62. Juli

A fall themed box would be lovely.

  63. Bonnie

I’m not sure what I would like to see, but the choc, pom cups looked good. I do like the idea someone else had for homemade products like toothpaste.

  65. Erin
