September ipsy Glam Bag – “Classic beauty”

My September ipsy bag appeared basically out of nowhere yesterday and while I wasn’t too excited about seeing it (I’d peeked at the spoilers), that pink bag in the mail always makes me smile.

The Bag

ipsy ships via DHL Global Mail. I have some other subscriptions that ship with DHL, but none seem to be as slow as ipsy.  I don’t know if it’s the hub they use or what?  I just ordered something from Julep who now uses DHL, so I look forward to seeing how long that one will take.

The Information Card

The September ipsy Glam Bag theme is “Classic Beauty” and is all about creating those looks from classic beauties have made us swoon from generation to generation.  Here is what my bag included:

~The Make-Up Bag:  I don’t even know how to describe this print (lacy floral maybe), but it’s not my favorite ipsy bag to date.

The Make-Up Bag

~Elizabeth Mott It’s So Big Volumizing Mascara ($8): This was probably my favorite item in the entire bag.  I love mascara and can’t think of many things better than a fresh tube of  mascara.  Something about those first few applications can’t be matched.

~Starlooks Obsidian Kohl Eye Pencil ($12): I could do without eye liner in subscription boxes for a few months!  I just can’t use them up fast enough so this is going to be passed on to a friend’s teenage daughter (who thinks it’s amazing when I send her boxes of make-up)!

~NYX Single Eye Shadow (Purple) ($4.50): I expected this to have some fancy name, but nope, it’s purple!  I was cracking up and I love it!  While I like the browns and the neutrals work the best for me, sometimes a purple is just more fun.

~skyn ICELAND Hydro Cool Firming Eye Gels ($7.50): No wait, I’m not most excited about the mascara, I’m most excited about these!  They promise to firm, tone and de-puff under-eye skin within 10 minutes.  Yes please!  Ipsy has a 20% discount on this brand this month (the code is: IPSY) and I’m ordering more.

~J.Cat Beauty Fantabulous Lipstick ($2.49): This is also going into the giveaway pile except to my SIL who loves lipsticks.  I think she’s currently avoiding my blog because she doesn’t want to see PopSugar spoilers (she goes spoiler free), but I look forward to hearing her thoughts on this shade!

~Bonus / Referral Gift: NYX Bronze Smokey Look Kit ($12): This month’s referral gift (you can earn referral gifts after you collect 1,000 IPSY points which is equal to 4 referrals) is fabulous.  It’s my favorite of all the kits on their site.  I did have some trouble opening it (the problem was with me, not with the container), which explains the big gouge in the shadow.  Oops!

My September ipsy bag had a value of $34.49 (that doesn’t include the cost of the referral gift which would have brought the total to $46.49) and while I wasn’t in love with my bag, I didn’t hate it either and totally think it was worth the $10/month cost.  I do plan on tweaking (not to be confused with twerking) my profile because I don’t think I get items that best match me!  This butter london and / or the cailyn lip balm would have been right up my alley!

i’m all about that nyc eye shadow!
i’ve never gotten one of these boxes, but i am never home enough to really get them and enjoy them. i enjoy seeing the products though, helps me keep an eye out for them when i’m shopping!

  2. Lisa D

Got Gold Poppy shadow for a fair skinned person…duh IPSY.

  3. Brandy

Julep plus DHL is super slow. I ordered one of the mystery boxes on the 9th and it’s still not here! My shipping just updated to say its finally in Orlando but it still needs to make it to Tampa!

🙁 It’s been taking forever for me to get my boxes. Ipsy says that DHL finally gave it to USPS but no updates… it shouldnt take as long as it’s taking to get from GA to FL. Grrrr, and Lip Factory I reached out to them because I am in the same city as them and its been over 3 days now… their looking into it for me. 🙁 :(:(:(

I was excited about all of this at first then I got my bag and I wasn’t really all that happy. I am a brunette and the taupe brow pencil will have to be passed on. Also the Starlooks liner seems sort of cheapie $1 storeish lol. It is a very generous size though, not a fan of the black and will also be passed on. The mascara is awesome! I have used it 2 days in a row. No clumps and gives a really natural look. Might be purchasing more of that. The lip tint is more like a matte lipstick. I like it but sad because I got the red Urban Decay last month so it is a bit of a repeat for me. I will use it though because I like the brush on application. Sad about not getting Butter London. They should have made that one of the things everyone gets. I really like the NYX brand and loved the shadow. I got a blue color called Velvet? Or something. Over all this was my least favorite bag since I have subscribed so I am not too upset. I did like that I got an entire look in my bag. It would be a great gift to someone if I wouldn’t have opened it up.

I got my first Ipsy bag yesterday and loved it! Is the mascara $8 or $19.99? I don’t know why the latter makes it more appealing to me, ha! But I really love it. I received a highlighter that is multipurpose. Makes a great concealer! Love the eyeshadow, the eyeliner is ok. Also received a lip crayon. This is my third lip crayon ths month from a sub box! must be a trend, luckily I do like them 😀

  7. Berit

I loved the mascara too. I ended up ordering it for $10 bucks with the Ipsy discount. The lipstick color is blah–makes you look ill because it’s such a pale shade. I gave away my eyeliner too, but got another one in Haute yesterday LOL! I thought Ipsy did a better job then Birchbox this month

  8. Judy

I definitely would have loved that butter london polish! I think I’m going to use their coupon code and just order it for myself.

  9. Mary W

i’ve tried tweaking my profile so many times. i can’t seem to get them to send me nail polish, etc. i didn’t like anything in my bag this time. it’s so frustrating.

  10. Heather

The only thing different in my bag was the Cailyn lip stain (didn’t get the eye gel stuff). Imo, you aren’t missing out on the stain… unless you really like bright red.

  11. Elaine

I love the NYX color you got, its so pretty!

  12. Jenny

I got the lip balm so I’m happy with that. I love balms and glosses but not so much sticks if that makes sense. I wanted the polish but noone I know around here got it. My moms bag is sitting at her house waiting for her to get back from a cruise and I already told her its mine if she got it. LOL The color was purple? really? Mine is Hot Crystal a light fun glittery color. I can’t believe they gave you such a boring color name.

  13. Mel

I got most of the same stuff except I got the set of 3 paper masks instead of the eye gels. My shadow was sparkly black, which was so pretty in the container, but it seems to have an awful lot of fall out and not much color payoff. Oh well. I got the same lip color and maybe I just don’t know how to use a nude lipstick, but it made me look like I was dead. I’m really not sure our profiles actually influence what we get. In spite of saying for months in the profile that I don’t use lipstick and rating the lipsticks I get low, I get a lipstick every month. Ive even emailed them about it, and just got a generic “we do our best” response. I so would have preferred the liquid liner or the nail polish, which my profile says, but nope. Lipstick again. I can’t complain too much for $10 a month, and I usually like everything else, but I just wish they’d stop advertising Ipsy Match. They don’t use it.

  14. Katy Quick

I signed up for Ipsy, any idea how long I’ll be on the “waiting list”?

  15. Ashley

If you want the Cailyn lip stain I will definitely give you mine. I cannot pull that crap off

  16. Janaya

I didn’t realize there were soo many different options for the bag! I got the same mascara, the eye pencil in the same shade, the NXY eyeshadow in the color Cryptonite, and then I got a Calilyn tinted lip balm in the color Big Apple, and last but certainly not least I got a Butter London nail polish in the color LA Moss! I was deff most excited for the nail polish 🙂

  17. angela

I did get the mascara and eyeliner, and the eyeshadow in something poppy? it’s like a gold/brown.. I got the POP crayon which had bad reviews but my color, rose romance, had TERRIBLE reviews… giveaway pile! I also got a highligher. I never used one and after plenty of youtube tutorials I’m in love!

  18. Tasha

This was my least favorite Ipsy bag as well, but it still wasn’t terrible!! I so wanted that highlighter though and I didn’t get it 🙁 I have been using the white Nyx eye shadow I received every single day however! It works great for the inside corners and right below the eyebrows. I haven’t tried the mascara yet but I’m glad to hear it seems to be good! I got the lash booster mascara last month and hated it after the first use, haven’t touched it since.

  19. I got the Cailyn lip stain and it looks so funny on me (I’m really pale with pink undertones)! I also received the concealer-colored lipstick and it broke when I was applying it (but it’s ok because I looked like I was a cadaver with it on).
You can read my review on my page at http://royalproclaims.blogspot.com/2013/09/september-ipsy.html. Also, I haven’t seen anyone say that they got the Em Michelle Phan “The Life Palette” sample. I got it and love it!

  20. Ashley

My ipsy bag contained the mascara, a light sheer blue NYX eyeshadow, the tinted lip balm that’s more than just tinted, the eye liner & another eyebrow pencil…ugh which is kind of annoying since I received one last month too. I updated my profile this week so that maybe I can get a change up in products. The shipping was soooo slow! according to the online tracking website my Ipsy bag sat in Georgia for 6 days before it went to Orlando…then made it to my house in North Florida 9 days after the first shipping email was sent.

  21. Shauna

Just cracked mine open and I got the same mascara, eyeliner and eye de puff things you did. I also received the Cailyn lip gloss in Big Apple, but it’s more bright red lip stain than gloss. My Nyx shadow was in Golden Poppy which is a sickly yellow that a my pale Irish peaches and cream complexion, blue eyes and red hair can’t pull off. Seriously, where do you trade stuff that absolutely won’t work for you?

I’m really excited to try the eye de puffer things, though and the lip “gloss” looks pretty good on me.

    Cheers,
    Shauna

  22. Lauren

    Hi
Yup I got this monthes bag, got the same shade of eye shadow as you, mascara and the nude lipstick, I also got the lip balm and liquid eyeliner.. I was really happy with this bag.

  23. Mary

Why can I not get Ipsy to send me an invite? I’ve received two birchboxes and requested the boxes at the same time. Are they that in demand?

  24. Rhyn

It took me about twice as long to get an Ipsy invite than a BB invite.

  25. Cassidy

I read in a previous post that you aren’t a makeup lover and you don’t know what to do with the bags…I have a suggestion. I have 5 subscriptions (4 beauty and 1 health). Each month I get products I am not a big fan of or I have 100 other like it (mascara, lip stick, lip gloss, eye or lip liner, nail polish), so I toss them in a box in the bottom of my closet along with the ipsy bags I don’t love or can’t use (I use them to store utensils for picnics, tooth brushes for travel, pens and pencils for college, and of course, makeup). Then when a birthday or Christmas rolls around, I pick out a few products and a bag I think the person will like, and I don’t have to go shopping. My nieces (8-14) LOVE me for it. It is their favorite gift every time. And when my daughter gets a little older, can you say “make over, sleep over”!?!
I am considering a gift subscription for them this year…my box is a little empty after all the birthdays and the lack of “not for me” products the last few months.
