September Kiwi Crate – “Modern Art”

L’s September Kiwi Crate arrived a few days ago, but we didn’t have a chance to work on it until after school today. I try my hardest to wait until we get a chance to do the projects to do these reviews because seeing the actual projects in their completed form is way better!

Kiwi Crate ships via FedEx Smart Post.  I think they now send out shipping e-mails a few days after your crate has actually shipped, so the wait doesn’t seem quite as long.

The September Kiwi Crate theme is “modern art” and included two projects to complete: “my color block painting” and “my hanging mobile”.   We picked the painting project first because it seemed messiest ;).  Here’s what we thought:

~Project #1 – My Color Block Painting:

My Color Block Painting – The Materials

The first project was “My Color Block Painting” and included everything needed to create a painting with unique patterns and designs.  It was high on the messiness scale (YAY!), low on the grownup involvement scale (not really since I believe paint = high grownup involvement) and involved creating, moving – fine and exploring.

L was all over this project!  He happily taped up his canvas (he only needed a little help from me) and got to painting.  We decided that four colors weren’t enough and decided to mix some colors to get orange, green and purple.  L knew exactly what needed to be mixed and would add more paint to get just the right shades ;).

We couldn’t wait to show B when he got home from work / school and when we did, he was all, no, you guys didn’t make that??  He was very impressed!  I thought this project was fun and easily something that could be recreated, but with different results.  Probably one of my favorite Kiwi Crate projects ever.

Project #2 – My Hanging Mobile:

The second Kiwi Crate project was “my hanging mobile” and included everything you needed to make your own hanging mobile – and then experiment with it to see how it balances.  The project was low on the messiness scale and medium on the grownup involvement scale.  It involved creating, moving – fine and discovering.

This wasn’t one of my favorite Kiwi Crate projects.  We had fun making it, but I thought the instructions were a bit hard to follow.  Once we just did things our own way, we were fine.  And our mobile was actually quite balanced!

Gift: Kiwi Crate Eraser Set

I wasn’t expecting it, but I love that Kiwi Crate included a little cute gift in the boxes this month!  L loves the little erasers and will totally use them when he does his homework.

explore! Magazine

This is Kiwi Crate’s second month of their “explore” magazine and I am still loving it.  It’s got all sorts of cute little activities and projects and I plan to throw it in my bag for when we are waiting to get out meals and restaurants and that sort of thing.

This month’s card included a card advertising their Limited Edition Halloween Crate, which looks quite cool.  It’s $19.95, but you can use the code “halloween5” to save 10%.

If you don’t already know, Kiwi Crate is $19.95/monthly and is geared towards kids ages 3-7.  We’ve subscribed for ages and have always enjoyed our crates!  If you are interested in subscribing, head to the Kiwi Crate website to order your crate.  And if you received a crate this month, what did you think?

Wow! The color block painting is really really good! I’d hang that on my wall for sure! So cute and fun – I will try to do something like that with my son when he’s older! Such a great idea.

Thanks so much for these reviews. I finally took the plunge and ordered Kiwi Crate. I think I will love having arts & craft projects on hand on a rainy day. I just found a deal on living social family for $36 for 3 months (plus $4.95 shipping), so you basically get one month free! Also, they send you a very cute Kiwi stuffed doll (a chick maybe?). Here’s the link!!
