Mama’s Got Mail, who kindly sent me this box to review made it to my mailbox safe and sound today. I actually think this is yesterday’s batch of mail I got this morning, but it will all get here eventually.

If you aren’t familiar, the idea behind Mama’s Got Mail is to help you feel encouraged and supported as a mom so that you can be the best woman you can be. Previous boxes have ranged from books to crafts to jewelry to coffee – lots of different things in these boxes! No matter what it is though, it’s all about taking some time for YOU!

January Mama's Got Mail
The Box

Mama’s Got Mail ships via USPS Priority Mail and usually takes the promised two days to arrive. This time it took five days to arrive, but that’s because of the weather mess going on here.

First Look

I never know what Mama’s Got Mail is going to do, so I was anxious to see what this month would bring.  And their titles are always pretty catchy, so that always entertains me.

January Mama's Got Mail
The Information Card

The January 2014 Mama’s Got Mail theme was “Fat & Fiction” and was inspired by New York Times best selling author Tim Ferriss, who says that the two things you should do before bed are “Fat & Fiction”.  Here is what the box included:

~The FatDr. Bronner’s Whole Virgin Coconut Oil ($10.99):  A spoonful of coconut oil before you go to bed every night is supposed to be great for your physical health.  It makes your hair shiny, your teeth white and your skin smoother.  I have tried sample packs on my hair and have been happy and you know what, I am going to try this for the next month or so and see what happens!

~The FictionGone Girl by Gillian Flynn ($14.89):  One of my 2014 goals is to read more, so this totally fits that bill!  And reading helps with your mental health and helps you unwind from your day.  At least it does that for me.  This probably isn’t a book I would have picked on my own (I like books with pink covers and pretty fonts), but I was reading the jacket and it looks really good, so I’m in!

~The Wooden Spoons ($10):  Now this is thoughtful.  So you don’t forget to take the coconut oil, Shannon (the mama behind Mama’s Got Mail) even included a pack of spoons to keep in / on your nightstand so you don’t forget!  No excuses!

All totaled, I came up with a value of about $35.88  for the physical items in the January Mama’s Got Mail Box.  As always, I can’t put a price tag on the workshop part of the box.  This month’s personal self check-in (the worksheet portion) is all about “Your Relationship with Yourself” and requests that this month, you schedule some YOU time on the calendar!  It also gives you space to put down things you are rocking at as an adult women and some sense of identity suggestions!

I just started a book series (there are 5 now and the 6th is coming out in March) by Darynda Jones. It is the Charley Davidson series about a female PI that is also the Grim Reaper. It is really interesting so far and its nice to see a female character that, in some capacity, can kick butt on her own.

    1. Jennifer

That is always a good thing!

did you take the coconut oil? i used it on my belly when i was pregnant and it helped alot- but did it provide any benefits?

      1. Jennifer

I did, but I don’t think I did it enough to notice any differences!

Gone Girl is a GREAT book. I read it in less than 3 days. They’re turning it into a movie with Reese Witherspoon and Ben Affleck.

    1. Jennifer

      Yay!

  3. Jill

Oh, that is a good book!!

    1. Jennifer

      Can’t wait!

I LOVED LOVED Gone Girl. You seriously will not be able to put it down. And even better its being made into a movie starring Ben Affleck 🙂

    1. Jennifer

I pretty much like any movie with him!

There is a problem with the Bloglovin application for iPad. I can’t open your blog 🙁
Anyway I have read the book, I hated it and loved it at the same time. It is a good read though. Happy to discuss it when you have read it.
I’m using coconut oil every night for my eye lashes. Made a difference.

    1. Jennifer

Yeah there’s just something funky going on in general with my blog today. I have nothing to do with bloglovin though so I don’t know what’s up there.

Gone Girl is a great read!!! It makes me want to subscribe.

    1. Jennifer

She always comes up with cool curations!!

I have a few friends that loved the book. I, unfortunately, found myself hoping it would get better as I read on. It did not. It’s a good concept, but didn’t deliver and was pretty predictable. They are making it into a movie though. I think with the right people and writers, the movie might actually be better than the book.

    1. Jennifer

I have to read it before the movie comes out!

Looks like a good.box! I loved that book couldn’t put it down!

    1. Jennifer

Yay! I am looking forward to it!

  9. Liz

What a great box. Not like a super good deal, but very good curation. Interesting, I have no kids and this box would be perfect for me. I think in a weird way they are doing themselves a disservice by limiting their customer base with that name. Anyway, Gone Girl is a great book! My favorite read from last year. Though it is very dark and definitely will not be at all similar to those pink cover books you referred to.

    1. Jennifer

      Amazing curation!

I am looking forward to this book even more with all these great reviews.

  10. Suzanne

I liked the book but didn’t love it, however, it kept my interest for sure!

    1. Jennifer

That’s all I really need from a book!

  11. Erica

Gone Girl will be a movie coming out later this year, with Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike. I loved/hated the book, too. Once you start its hard to put down and hard to not talk about with anyone who will listen.

    1. Jennifer

I’ll talk about it with my husband. He won’t listen, but I don’t care!

  12. Lana

I liked that book – it was definitely a page turner! I’m actually reading another Gillian Flynn book for my blog right now, so apparently I’m a fan, haha.

    1. Jennifer

You are making me look forward!

  13. I read Gone Girl last week, it was really, really good! Kept me intrigued the whole time and I finished it in one sitting!

    1. Jennifer

      I can’t wait!

  14. Glenna

I remember that being a really good book! Really captivating once you get into the story 🙂

    1. Jennifer

      Good to know! Thanks!

  15. Natalie

My whole book club liked that book, we read it last summer, and we don’t always usually agree! It takes a minute to get into at first!

    1. Jennifer

      That is good to know!

  16. Kayla

I really liked this book and am excited to hear that its going to be a movie!

    1. Jennifer

      I can’t wait!

  17. Mallory B

This is SUCH a good book! If I remember correctly, it took a little bit to get into, but then I stayed up til 4 am finishing it.

    1. Jennifer

LOL! That will totally be me.

  18. Anne

If you like a mystery, I think you’ll love Gone Girl. I got so sucked in and read it really fast. I’m always apprehensive when it comes to picking up a book I’ve never heard of, unless it comes with a great recommendation. This was a pleasant surprise, with twists that made it interesting but not confusing.

    1. Jennifer

I’m actually not a big mystery reader, but everyone is raving about this, so I am excited to start it!

  19. Jacqueline

So you just lick the coconut oil off the spoon? What does it taste like? And the consistency…. I’m scared but curious.

    1. Jennifer

It’s a thicker consistency. Almost paste like. Not like a vegetable oil?? It’s actually quite good!

  20. Melissa Hammons

Loved the book and can’t wait for the movie! Anything with Ben Affleck is good.

    1. Jennifer

      Totally agree!

  21. Tiffany

I think its pretty funny that they picked a book with a specifically crazy character (not to give too much away!) to help with “mental health.” 🙂

    1. Jennifer

      Lol!!

  22. Jill Geraci

I read Gone Girl. I liked it but the ending upset me. Sigh.
As far as things under $5, I enjoy:
    1. UmCheeky panties sub even though they are technically $6. Close enough.
    2. Cheap candles that I can get a steal from like on BBW and Illume (whoa on that deal)
    3. Super cute polish deals from Julep or a swap/trade. I got. Few gorgeous Loreal and China Glaze from Amazon for under $5. Score!!!
    4. Hand Food lotion from Sephora. It’s awesome for $5!
    5. Lucky mag or Glamour. I sub to both and look forward to them every month.
    6. A non-fat grande espresso drink of choice from Starbucks. 🙂
I could go on and on. 🙂

Anxiously looking forward to my first Wantable Intimates this month. Woo hoo!

    1. Jennifer

      That is close enough!

And I do love that lotion as well!

  23. Lorns

I read Gone Girl last summer and really enjoyed it, and I don’t tend to like the ‘bandwagon’ books. Update us on whether the coconut oil works!

    1. Jennifer

      I will!
