Poll: Do You Sleep with the Fan On?

Sorry, there are no polls available at the moment.
I cannot believe we haven’t done this poll yet. I hear this question asked by my Facebook friends all the time. “Do you sleep with the fan on?” or “Is it crazy that I need to sleep with the fan on?” And it always turns out that there are a ton of fan sleepers out there. Box fans, ceiling fans, nightstand fans, you name it. People want them on.

I personally don’t like sleeping with the fan on, but B does.  So B turns our ceiling fan on when he goes to bed and when I go to bed a few hours later, I turn it off.  I don’t mind the sound of the fan as much as that cold air blowing on me when I am trying to sleep! If it’s 90 degrees in the summer I can deal but other than that, no way.

What about you?  Do you need to have a fan on when you sleep?  Does your spouse or S/O need to have one on and you don’t like it?  I can’t wait to see how this one turns out!!!

I have a box fan and I HAVE to sleep with it on!

    1. Jennifer

LOL! So many people do! What do you do when you travel?

I didn’t need a fan to sleep before my husband (who needs it), so now I need it since he has it on every night. I’m like you where the feel of ‘wind’ on me at night drives me crazy, so I think it’s just the sound for me. We have a small fan that he tilts away from me, so we make it work.

    1. Jennifer

It’s not even a big wind, but it’s enough to irk me.

B used to sleep with a fan blowing towards his side of the bed. I can’t stand the cold air blowing on me, unless it’s a very hot summer night. After that fan died, he never replaced it but started sleeping with the ceiling fan on- which was worse! It’s always driven me crazy but I continuously lost that battle since he said he HAD to have it to sleep. When I got pregnant, I told him we couldn’t have the fan blowing in the room with the baby. Now that the baby is here, there is no more fan 🙂 Hopefully he doesnt start using it again when she is in her own room!

    1. Jennifer

You will have to keep the baby in your room forever!!!!

My mom thinks I’m crazy to always sleep with a fan on! Middle of winter and I still have the fan on and occasionally the window open too! I just prefer to cold rather than hot!

    1. Jennifer

I can deal with a window open (I mean not when it’s this cold), but, but the fan is just not for me.

I have always slept with a fan on. I need both the sound and the air circulation. If I’m in a room with stagnant air I feel almost like I can’t breathe. In the winter I sleep with a space heater that makes a fan noise. I know its a terrible energy waster and I always feel guilty, but a girl’s gotta do what she’s gotta do to get some sleep. My husband does not like air blowing on him, so we just always turn the fan or heater away from him. I don’t need it pointed at me, I just need air flowing in the room.

I also need the noise. If there is a power surge or something, I wake up immediately because the quiet of the fan stopping. Nothing creeps me out more than a silent room.

I travel with a small desk fan.

I love that everyone has their own “thing”!!!

We use an upright fan during the summer so we don’t have to crank the central air as much, but don’t use one during the winter. My kids?! I turn theirs on year round — we close their doors so it helps the air circulate, and they enjoy the noise!

WB uses a noise machine and L did for the longest time. L now sleeps like a rock because of that sound machine!

  7. I use a small white noise machine that helps me sleep, because I am a light sleeper. I take it with me when I travel, since it is small. I don’t like a fan on at night unless it is summer (we have window air conditioning and I hate the noises they make). Our house doesn’t have ceiling lights in the bedrooms, much less ceiling fans.

    1. Jennifer

My old condo didn’t have ceiling lights either. Totally took some getting used too!

Once I hit peri-menopause any sound and light drove me crazy. I had to get black out curtains and cover any little LED that was in the room. Any little sound woke me up too so I put a fan in my room…essentially it’s my white noise machine. Plus….OMG night sweats!!! Now that I’m “on the other side” those kind of things don’t bother me anymore, but both my husband and I are used to the fan being on so we leave it (it does hide little noises which is great). If I’m in a hotel room or at someones house, don’t need a fan at all (lights still bother me just not as much).

    1. Jennifer

I dated someone that couldn’t sleep with any lights on either! He had to seriously cover the red light on the dvd player!

I used to like sleeping with the ceiling fan on but, I can’t anymore. The last couple of years when I would use the fan I would wake up with pounding headaches. I figured it had to be the ceiling fan causing them – weird. 🙁

    1. Jennifer

That is weird, but I have weird things like that too!!! You just never know!

  10. Heather

I always had to sleep with a fan on, just for the noise, I can’t stand silence. Since I’m a single Mom, every noise I heard in the house at night freaked me out. But I was getting really cold this winter, so I bought a sound machine that plays fan sounds! So now I have the noise and I’m warm!

    1. Jennifer

Good call! All those little noises freak me out when I am home alone too!

  11. Jenny

I hate fans. I would take them all out of my house if I had my way. LOL however down south it would be odd to not have ceiling fans. M has been around long enough that he just deals with me and no fans. 😉 He does like to go to sleep with the tv on and I don’t mind that so much and can go either way but it has to be set on sleep so that it goes off otherwise it wakes me up about 3ish and that annoys me. Oh and on other fan related news. Do you run the fan in the bathroom when showering? I never did since I hate bathroom fan noise too so he put a fan switch with a timer so when I leave the bathroom I can tap it on and it will run for the preset time. Makes us both happy.

    1. Jennifer

You know, I do not run a fan when I am showering, but B does. Something about the steam or something? I don’t care. I want that bathroom as warm as possible!

  12. Nicolette

I must have my ceiling fan on, more for the cold breeze than the noise.

    1. Jennifer

      So many people love it!

  13. Aimee V

Now that I’m on third shift I have to sleep with the fan, it’s the sound. Hell… I even point it at the wall!

    1. Jennifer

Is Brad on 3rd shift too?

      1. Aimee V

        Yes he is!
