Kiwi Crate
Cost: $19.95/month.
Ships To: United States and Canada.
Our March 2014 Kiwi Crate arrived on Saturday and L and I took some time yesterday (seriously yesterday was a fun day) to work on it!
If you aren’t familiar, Kiwi Crates are designed around fun themes and filled with all of the materials and inspiration for hands-on projects for kids ages 3-7. L is 5 and is getting to the point where he can be more in charge of the project and is able to follow along on the instructions better and better each month. For some of them he doesn’t even need me!
Kiwi Crate ships via FedEx Smart Post and takes about a week to arrive. Smart Post always seems to take a week to get to me, no matter what box it is or where it ships from!
My March 2014 Kiwi Crate theme was “City Adventure” and included two projects – “my skyscraper” and “my taxi cab”. Kiwi Crate now sends a variety of different crates to subscribers (as many as eight different crates are circulating each month per Kiwi Crate) so you may or may not have received the same crate I did this month. Some subscribers will receive City Adventures crate this month, while others will receive a crate sent out in a previous month. I have subscribed for almost two years so I always get the “new” crate because I have already received most all of their other ones.
Project #1: My Skyscraper
The first project we worked on was “my skyscraper” and included everything you needed to make your own skyscraper or city block. It was low on the messiness scale, low on the grownup involvement scale and involved discovering, moving – fine and creating.
L picked this one to work on first. He built the entire city block by himself while I worked on coloring some of the backgrounds. When he was done building, he drew the pictures in the storefronts. He so loved building this and I need to get him some of those K’Nex blocks or something so he can build like crazy!
Project #2 – My Taxi Cab
The second project was “my taxi cab” and included everything you needed to build a car and roll it around the city streets. It was low on the messiness scale, medium on the grownup involvement scale and involved exploring, creating and moving – fine.
I was surprised at how easy this one was! I think it took L and I maybe 5 minutes to finish? It’s surprisingly cute and sturdy and yes, this project included washi tape! I think one day this week I might make some washi roads on the kitchen floor for the boys to drive their cars and trains on. It’ll be a huge hit and I owe Kiwi Crate big for thinking of it.
This month’s explore! magazine included a story, a few drawing projects and various craft ideas. They have a super cute idea to build with toothpicks and mini marshmallows. Now that is a great idea. I am so excited about doing this with L. We don’t have any mini marshmallows or we would have done this yesterday!
Did you get Kiwi Crate this month? What’d you think? Which box did you get this month? If you are interested in subscribing, head to the Kiwi Crate website to order your crate. And don’t forget to use the coupon code “LUCKY” to save 30% off your first box! This code expires today (3/17) though, so act quickly!
Our Kiwi Crate hasn’t shipped yet. I can’t wait to see if we get this box or another one (it’s only our 2nd Kiwi Crate).
It hasn’t?? I wonder why not?
These are such cute projects. I think my second grader is a little beyond them and my two year old too young but I think in a year or two he would really like them a lot.
Totally agree! I think we’ve got another year and then the projects will be for my little one!
L is so cute posing with his creations! I love it!
He was proud of that city!
We got the safari adventures box this month, it was a hit!
I had worried these would be too young for my oldest (she’s in first grade) but she loves crafts and she’s been able to do most projects completely on her own, which she probably couldn’t have done a year ago.
I think they really like it when they can do it on their own!
I have 3 girls, but both my 4th grader and kindergartener like kiwi crate. They get so excited when they see the green box on the porch. I get the sibling add on, so they can each do the projects. My oldest is still into it, but loves crafts, so that’s probably why she hasn’t outgrown it yet.
That’s awesome too because they can do them together!
hi! i was just wondering if you knew wether or not everyone gets the same theme?
for instance i just signed up for my first kiwi crate, and it shipped yesterday- i am assuming its for april..it is the wild safari crate.. just wondering if we are all going to get the wild safari or if they send random themes out to everyone.. i love this site! I’ve checked out all the pets on bluum and citrus lane too and i absolutely love all the pictures! its been very helpful to me as a new mom (2months) and step mom to a 3 year old!! thanks!
HI Jamie! I have a note about this in my post, but no, not everyone gets the same box. I’m not sure who gets what, but an assortment of different boxes are sent out. You said you are getting Wild Safari and I might get something else.
ps. and when i say ” i love this site” i mean your ” ramblings of a suburban mom blog!! I’m not one for these kinds of things but apparently kids will change you!! I’m loving all your reviews and ideas!
Great post! I hope we get the Safari box later. This month Zack received the Pirate Adventure and it was perfect for an almost 3 year old and older kids would have loved it too. Overall hr actually got 4 projects! Pirate hat, eye patch, parrot puppet, and a treasure, chest with maps you can make to find treasure.
Oh that one looks cute! I don’t think we have ever received that one.
