Tuesday’s Troubles

Disclosure: If you make a purchase through the links posted below, I may receive a small compensation. Read the full disclosure.

It’s time for another edition of Tuesday Troubles. I’ve said it before (like every week), but this should be named “things i’m annoyed / confused / want to complain about”, however I couldn’t figure out how to make any of those into a snappy title, so Tuesday Troubles it is.  And yes, I do realize that these aren’t true “troubles”. I know that many of these for sure could be defined as first world problems!

~You know how obsessed I am with MH370 and how no one has uncovered any pieces of the plane yet. Basically we “think” we know where it is, but we have no idea why it’s so far off course, who was at the controls, what the motive was, etc. I don’t have a fear of flying, but the next time I am flying somewhere with no radar coverage, I am going to be mighty nervous. Why didn’t I realize that so much of the planet wasn’t covered? I just assumed someone was tracking every single plane at all time. Turns out that’s a no.

~I keep reading / hearing all about oil pulling so it’s about time we discuss it here. The thought of it makes me want to vomit, but I am intrigued that it could make my teeth brighter in just days. I am totally down for that. Should I try this? Is it crazy? Do you do it? Give me all the scoop!

~Ugh. There are certain household appliances (I guess you could call it that) that I hate and the garbage disposal is my biggest nemesis. The number of things I have crushed up on accident in that thing is unreal. I hope B’s not reading this (he’s traveling today so I hope he’s too busy for this), but just yesterday there was a bit of an accident with the metal lid to his water bottle. I’ve accidentally disposed of a glass jar, numerous pieces of silverware, sippy cup pieces, a fish (RIP Ralphie) and many many more things. Why why why isn’t there some sort of sensor on that thing? Something that won’t let it turn on if it senses, umm, metal? Or plastic? Or something other than food?  Because yeah, that would save me a lot of trouble with B.

~Despite being on the Do Not Call List (is that thing even for real) my cell phone has been blowing up with crazy telemarketer calls (not even real people – recordings which drives me even crazier).  So I am complaining about it to B and he’s all why don’t you just block them?  Umm, what?  Yeah, I didn’t know you could block people from your iPhone.  What other secret things does this thing do that I am missing out on?  And does anyone else hate those stupid recorded telemarked calls?  Dude, stop calling me about getting an extended warranty on a lease car I turned in 5 years ago.  I don’t want that.

~And finally, I don’t know how it snuck up on me, but this weekend is Easter!  And B’s birthday (Friday) and WB’s birthday (Saturday).  I have some stuff from subscription boxes that I have put aside for WB’s birthday, but Easter.  What are you doing for Easter baskets this year?  I mean what’s the bunny doing if you celebrate.  Are swim trunks lame? I’ll do a little candy, but we don’t need any more toys that’s for sure.  Swim trunks?  Books?  New crocs?  Would our bunny be lame to only include useful items?

That’s it from here for now! What’s troubling you today?

I had no idea there was such a thing! I do need this!!!!

Easter baskets are always hard for me since my son doesn’t eat candy (I have no idea how this happened). Those blind Lego minfig packs are always a hit and I went for the books too – I got Garfield and Calvin and Hobbes comics and a ‘choose your own adventure’ type book. I also usually throw in some kind of game too, the ones by Thinkfun are all awesome, and small enough to fit. I never considered swim trunks, but that seems very springy. Don’t forget the sunglasses!

    1. Jennifer

Ohh, the mini fig packs are a good idea. Do they have new ones out yet? Anything besides the lego movie ones??

      1. Annie

I think Lego Movie are still the most recent ones. But you can check out what I call the ‘stocking stuffer aisle’ at Target. you know, the spot where they have all the trading cards and stuff, its usually up by the registers. It often has a bunch of other surprise packs, I know I’ve seen Adventure Time, TMNT and Angry Birds stuff for sure, I cant seem to recall the other things, but there is usually plenty of different themes.

Ha I hear you on Easter! We are getting our house ready to put it on the market and I am putting toys and stuff in storage and now I have to go out and buy more ahhh!
But of course I’m going to but useful things would make life easier! And I have put many things down the garbage disposal as well…thank god my dad is a plumber lol!

    1. Jennifer

Ha!!! I can totally see that. I would end up doing the same!

I saw a magazine article about oil pulling and the person who wrote it said her teeth only whitened a tiny bit and that it wasn’t really worth the hassle/gross factor.

If you want to whiten your teeth try colgate optic white toothpaste paired with the mouthwash. I saw huge differences!

    1. Jennifer

Well It’s not just the teeth, but the other things too. Some people swear by it.

I’ve done oil pulling for about a month now. I use coconut oil and to me the worst part is having the oil melt in your mouth. After it’s melted it isn’t as bad to swish it around your mouth for awhile. While the whole thing still grosses me out a little (it’s gross to spit the oil in the trash after, etc.) I will say my teeth are wonderfully white. There is no sensitivity like I get when I use whitening products and it whitens all of your teeth not just the front ones like strips do. Plus I’ve noticed my sinuses are clearer, I never have morning breath, and I once woke up with a little bit of a headache and after oil pulling that morning it went away. If nothing else I do it for a cheaper, safer way to whiten my teeth.

    1. Jennifer

Did it take a while to get used too?

  6. Mary

I ave tried oil pulling, but if I do coconut oil I instaintly gag. I can do sesame oil for about 30 seconds. I really want to be into it, but it has not been easy. I have heard not to brush teeth after because it weakens your enamel. Some people do to get the minty breath feeling we are used to. So keep that in mind. Also, with coconut oil I have heard of people having a pretty harsh detoxing phase.

    1. Jennifer

Ugh. I am afraid I will throw up. But I want to try….

I don’t know how it started, but we always put a DVD in the Easter Basket. I also had helped my mom move once and found the surplus of old baskets she had stored away, so when I had kids I bought really cute stuffed Easter baskets and then every year we put them out, like you would stockings at Christmas, and the bunny would come and fill them.

    1. Jennifer

Ohh, I like the dvd idea!

    My Tuesday troubles are…

My Birchbox. Ugh. I’m jealous that you got your box early and missed this fun shipping fiasco.

I know it’s redundant and pointless to complain… but I’m a gardener and I just want to play in the dirt. Could it pretty please just warm up a little? This snow is killing me. Also, every spider that woke up in the warm last week is now keeping toasty inside my house.

    1. Jennifer

This snow is never going to end.

What’s going on with Birchbox? There have been months I haven’t gotten mine until the 20th or so! It all just depends!

  9. Elizabeth

For Easter, the girls are getting Legos/Mega Blocks, books and the Anna doll from Frozen (we couldn’t find Elsa). There will be some candy in the eggs the Easter bunny leaves, but it will mostly be stickers.

    1. Jennifer

The bunny needs to go out shopping on Friday…

  10. Sue

I am also intrigued by oil pulling – it sounds like it has great benefits but I just don’t think I could get past the gag reflex. I’m pretty sure I would vomit. 🙁

    1. Jennifer

I am pretty sure I would vomit too. But I might try anyway. LOL.

  11. Jenny

My easter bunny sends useful items too. This year there are a couple toy things but then books, shirts, a little candy etc. My EB also doesn’t use just a basket since really do we need more of those in this house so Cs will be in his skip hop tote from CL and I won a chevron bag from a local store that I will use for Ns. 🙂 Last year the EB sent them in rectangular sterilite totes with a note that they can be used to store the skylanders LOL So we use one for that and one for the Disney Infinity characters. Perfect use and they are non-the wiser.

    1. Jennifer

Your bunny is so creative! My bunny needs to go shopping.

I am so grossed out by the idea of oil pulling and had seen it all over Facebook. So I posed the question and someone posted this response.

    http://www.snopes.com/medical/homecure/oilpulling.asp

I know that snopes isn’t the be all end all on things but this had me convinced. (The idea of swishing oil around in my mouth is enough to make me want to hurl.)

    1. Jennifer

It sounds SO gross. Maybe I will get B to try it with me and see what happens…

  13. Janaya

I’d never heard of oil pulling until now, you deff have to give us updates on how it goes if you decide to try it!

    1. Jennifer

      I will!

Oil-pulling: I read a doctor’s take on it, and he (or she?) said there was nothing wrong with it per se, but that there wasn’t anything oil pulling did that swishing water or mouthwash that long wouldn’t also do. It’s the swishing not the substance.

Easter baskets: I know some people really go all out and give tons of stuff, but I tend to keep my son’s fairly small since I don’t want him to get too caught up in Easter being about stuff, but at the same time, I want him to have fun, and I remember from childhood how much fun Easter baskets were, and we just had small ones with candy. That said, I don’t like to do just candy, so I got him a humorous book this year, and I usually toss in one of those mystery Lego mini figures or a little Lego set. Our Target was out of those minis this year though. Sniff. And he noticed the little set I picked up for him, so I let him have it early. Oh well!

I love the suggestions about alternate Easter baskets! I’m using a cute tote I picked up on clearance at Target after last Easter. My son’s grandmother usually gives him a very small candy “Easter basket” when we have Easter dinner over there, and she usually uses a small plastic container (like a larger margarine tub). That’s what they call Norwegian Tupperware around here. 😉

    1. Beth

Oops, the tote is from Hallmark not Target. It’s one of those ones that lies flat until you pop it up which makes storage really easy. I think they sell those every year, and they’re very decorative.

    2. Jennifer

LOL! We have Easter baskets, but I do love that idea. I think I got a mix of things in my easter basket. I don’t want to them anything big, but not a ton of chocolate either (since I will just eat that).

  15. Beth

I’ve been wanting to do the oil pulling as well – I actually think I could do it with coconut oil. I’ll make a deal with you to try it and report back after a week. I plan to just start with a small amount and we’ll see what happens. I read the snopes.com article – but to me, that just says not medically proven, which to me means just hasn’t been tested yet. We’ll see. My teeth need some major whitening between coffee and red wine.

I’m with you on MH370 – heck, I care more now about WHY then the WHERE and no one has even mentioned that lately. And I, too, was under the assumption that every plane was tracked every second. I was shocked to find out otherwise.

    1. Jennifer

I agree. Okay, so it’s in the ocean. We kind of have known that for 4 weeks. Why?????

  16. Ashley C.

I think useful things from the Easter Bunny are great! I always tuck in a new toothbrush, a fun pack of band aids, and some fun outdoor things, since its spring. This year, we’re also doing camp chairs for the kids, books, a Melissa and Doug puzzle and some bubbles. I try to steer clear of candy, for the most part, but do goldfish crackers or those little tummy tickler juices!

    1. Jennifer

Ohh, I could always do chalk….

  17. Jeannie Forehand

I taught the 2-yr-old Bible class last Easter. I didn’t want to give the kiddos candy (wasn’t sure about allergies, figured they would already be given lots of it, etc). I asked FB friends for ideas, one suggested some Easter themed toothpaste she had seen at Target (maybe Colgate?). It was a hit.

    1. Jennifer

      That’s a cute idea!!

  18. Jennifer

B and I have the same birthday! Happy early birthday B and WB!!!

    1. Jennifer

      Happy Birthday to you!!!!

  19. Lora

Oil pulling is so easy and not gross of gag inducing at at all!! It’s amazing it pulls all toxins from your mouth, gums, teeth, throat etc. Teeth whitening is an added plus. No negative side effects at. Def do it. Coconut
Oil all the way. For 20 mins or so and pull/swish it through your teeth!

    1. Jennifer

Okay, I think it’s going to happen this weekend!

  20. Katie

We don’t even have garbage disposals here! Wonder who decided we shouldn’t?

And I just realised I hadn’t read your blog lately… 100 posts waiting for me hehe!

    1. Jennifer

You don’t?? Hmm, that is crazy!
