May 2014 Kiwi Crate – Farm Fun

It was a totally gorgeous day here today and then, after dinner, we got a freak little rain storm. But it worked out perfectly because it gave us a chance to work on out May 2014 Kiwi Crate!

If you aren’t familiar, Kiwi Crates are designed around fun themes and filled with all of the materials and inspiration for hands-on projects for kids ages 3-7. L is 5 (almost 6) and is getting to the point where he can be more in charge of the project and is able to follow along on the instructions better and better each month.  I think he’s going to love it when he takes charge of the projects and can help WB do them! It won’t be too long.

First Look

This was the first look after I took out the instructions and other “paperwork”. The project materials are usually separated with a divider so you don’t have to dig around to find what packets go with what projects.

Farm Fun

Our May 2014 Kiwi Crate theme was “Farm Fun” and included two projects – “my barnyard friends” and “my farm plot”.  Kiwi Crate now sends a variety of different crates to subscribers (as many as eight different crates are circulating each month per Kiwi Crate) so you may or may not have received the same crate I did this month.  Some subscribers will receive Farm Fun this month, while others will receive a crate sent out in a previous month. I have subscribed for almost two years so I always get the “new” crate because I have already received most all of their other ones.

My Farm Plot – The Supplies

The first project we worked on was “my farm plot”.  It included everything you needed to plant your own crops and build a fence around your plot.  And then you can watch your plants grow and draw their progress.  The project was medium on the messiness scale, medium on the grownup involvement scale and involved moving – fine, communicating and discovering.

We loved this project!  It is so L and so us.  We thought the soil pellets were the coolest and I don’t think L expected them to spread out into actual dirt like they did.   We even had farmer B come and make sure we did everything right!  And now we are super excited to start seeing out seeds (wheatgrass and radish) grow!

Project #2: My Barnyard Friends

The second project was “my barnyard friends” and included everything you needed to create a set of farm animal finger puppets.  It was low on the messiness scale, low on the grownup involvement scale and involved exploring, moving – fine and creating.

L took this project very seriously.  He assigned me the chicken and the duck and he worked on the rest.  WB was already in bed when we worked on this, but I think L and I will put on a puppet show for him later today.  He’ll totally get a kick out of that.  And L likes a captive audience so it will work out well.

explore! Magazine

This month’s explore! magazine has puzzles, coloring activities, a story and two fun projects.  One was painting with vegetables and the other was making your own whipped butter.  We actually just made butter at the farm last week and I want to do it again here so this was an awesome reminder!

The Farm projects look so cute! I would be jealous, but we are getting the Rainforest one this month which I was jealous of seeing everyone get last month 🙂 I am so excited for the summer crates – they are adorable.

I wish I could buy just this one. This one is so cute and perfect for my LO, but I’m sure I won’t get this one.

They offer single crates! Maybe this will pop into the store online soon??
