I am kind of under the impression that the smaller Lip Monthly box was designed to hold all of the products, but it never quite seems to work that way!

The Information Card

The June 2014 Lip Monthly box includes the following items which have a “great summer vibe”:

~Essie Naturally Clean Purifying Hand Treatment: This is pretty much acts as an antibacterial hand sanitizer, but it moistures at the same time.  I liked that it wasn’t drying and didn’t make my hands feel all weird like antibacterial stuff does.

~Purple Labs Huge Lips Skinny Hips Lip Plumper: I have never heard of this brand and I would say that the plumper worked “ok”.  I always expect some huge change from lip plumpers, but it’s usually much more subtle.  Or it makes my lips feel so weird that I have to wipe it off right away.

~Lipology Anti-Feathering Stick: I had to google what an anti-feathering stick does, but it appears it’s used to help prevent lip color from sneaking outside of your lips.  I am going to pass this along to my SIL who is a big lipstick lover.

~lol – Lots of Love LipStick: Another sister-in-law item.  I really need to get her to take a picture of all of her lipsticks.  I bet her collection could rival my nail polish collection.  Seriously.

~Mary Kate and Ashley Lip Foils: It’s hard for me to say anything bad about a lipgloss, so yes, I like these.  The colors are fun and I like that they are tiny so you could easily throw them in a pocket.

I didn’t do a cost breakdown on this box mainly because most (all?) of the products are discontinued.  I don’t mind getting discontinued items (except of course if I fall in love with something because then it’s hard to replace), but I wish they would put a note about it on their site.  Although I suppose it’s possible that they will be including some current products down the road.  Still for $10/box it’s not a bad deal at all!

At first I was interested in this box until I saw it was mostly discontinued items. I’ll keep an eye on reviews for a few months to see if that changes. If it does, maybe I’ll try it out, since I am big lipstick fan!

Have you had any issues being that everything is discontinued? I know when I’ve purchased discontinued makeup before sometimes its old and smells weird or fades quicker.

I haven’t noticed anything, but I think some people on MUT mentioned issues.

I’ve been hearing awful things about this company. Also, I’ve been reading some of the discontinued products are 2+ years old!! Which means they are possibly expired. Kind of scary huh?!

I am not even sure how to figure out when something was discontinued? I wonder how they know? Maybe there is somewhere you can put in the lot number? Not sure??

Lip Monthly seems to be having a struggle getting going. Their website is minimal and uninteresting, at times not functioning. Their products, well, as you say, not the latest and greatest. Most important, clearly despite their claim to “travel the world seeking the best” it seems more like they are holed up in an office making desperate phone calls.

It’s all about establishing steady relationships with suppliers and getting out nice product. We see they are “trying” but not yet succeeding, 2 months in. So your July review might be revealing!

I hope they come around, as an ALL-LIP selection in a $10 box would be fun and a good complement to Birchbox. Lip colors are the fastest way to get dressed or change your appearance in a second. How can we have too many?!

Fyi, there is no legal requirement to put an “expiration date” on a lipstick, and rarely is there one, but sometimes there is. More companies are doing this because it, overall, it encourages people to toss partially used lipsticks and buy new ones, instead of keeping them in their drawer for 5 years. It’s healthier and more fun all around.

Discontinued is a separate issue from expiration dates! Something may be discontinued (“we are dumping this formula, or this color”) and so they get rid of it as fast as possible via whatever outlet is a good deal. Eg: Loreal might discontinue a color, sell 10,000 of them to Walmart for nationwide distribution. Or, they may sell in small lots to other distributors like this box.

So it is going to be beyond its first freshness, but impossible to say just how old. There is a lot number on lipstick labels. If you have an inside track to a specific beauty company, you may be able to get the date it was produced and such. But generally there is no benefit to them sharing this info, so they don’t. They need that lot number in the unlikely event of an illness or recall.

Well, I don’t know whether to wait for Lip Monthly, seems a bit disorganized. Or try a different box like the Mini Dottie which looks cute and fun. My policy is to spend no more than $15 per box. Except of course for my doggie, she gets a $25 box!
