B’s December Mantry arrived this afternoon and I took a break from Christmas errands and chores to unbox it all! If you aren’t familiar with them, Mantry (aka the Modern Man’s Pantry) is a food of the month club that lets you discover the finest american artisan foods – and gives you ideas of what to do with them. It’s $75/month and has been around since the Fall of 2012.
Mantry typically ships via UPS Sure Post, but this month UPS delivered our box. I had a UPS package coming today anyway, so they delivered both at the same time.
As usual Mantry arrived in their signature wooden crate. We save all these, but still haven’t actually done anything with them. Someone suggested using them as shelves, which is a really cute idea and may happen!
The December 2014 Mantry theme was “Bourbon Breakfast” and featured items with an extra kick to get your morning going. I knew this theme sounded familiar so I did a little search on my blog and it turns out it was also the theme back in October 2012. So if you’ve been a subscriber for a while this is a repeat theme which is a bit disappointing in my opinion. But the items were a bit different as you can see below:
~Whimsey & Spice Hazelnut Whiskey Cookies ($9.50): I can get behind eating cookies – with whiskey in them no less – for breakfast ;). Mantry says that they know that they don’t quite fit the theme (Whiskey ≠ Bourbon), but they loved them so much they had to include them.
~Skillet Street Food Bacon Spread ($14.99): This is totally a favorite of Mantry’s and has appeared in a few of their boxes I believe. They suggest it on toast with avocado in the information card, but I can tell you that it is really good on burgers too.
~The Syrup Shop 100% Pure Vermont Maple Syrup ($10): Mmmm, so good! I couldn’t resist testing this out (I mean who could) and it’s fabulous. Mantry has an amazing recipe in the information book which includes two shots of bourbon, butter, apples and is the topping for the pancake mix below which is going to happen here this weekend. For sure.
~Freddy Guy Hazelnut Farm Hazelnut Pancake Mix ($5): This mix is made at a farm in Monmouth, OR and will also be happening this weekend!
~The Jam Stand Bourbon Blueberry Jam ($10): This is another familiar Mantry item, but like the bacon spread, it’s fabulous. It works on just toast or you can do a little fancier and use it on a fried egg sandwich.
~La Quercia Spicy Borsellino ($10.99): I know we have received this brand before, but I am not sure if it was this exact variation. I think B has used it in the past for chili, but I think their idea of it on a breakfast sandwich with egg sounds perfect.
All totaled I came up with a value of $60.48 for the December 2014 Mantry Bourbon Breakfast” crate. We liked all of the products in the box, but I think it would have much more fun if they were all new products to Mantry. I think if you are going to do a repeat theme you should make sure it’s ALL new stuff and not have any repeats from the last box – no matter how amazing it was!
