Nerd Block, which is a monthly mystery box full of nerd gear, offered “Grab Blocks” during the Black Friday / Cyber Monday craziness.   I opted to pick one up in hopes it would have some stocking stuffers for L and it arrived yesterday.

The Grab Blocks were $15.99 (reg. $19.99) plus shipping so it worked out to $25.49 and promised to include a t-shirt, a FUNKO Pop item along with 4-6 collectible items – all from previous blocks.

The Box

Nerd Block ships out of Canada and took just under a week to arrive.

First Look

The first look was mixed.  Nothing jumped out at me, but I was willing to give it a chance.

The Customs Sheet

Nerd Block doesn’t do an information card, but they do list the contents of the box on the customs label attached to the front.  Pay no attention to the prices they include because they always total the cost of the box (which in this case was $15.99) and don’t really reflect individual item costs.

Here is what my Grab Block included:

~Funko Pop! Assassin’s Creed Plague Doctor ($10.98):  I was kind of hoping for a superhero funk pop, but since it’s a mystery box you just never know.  We don’t play Assassin’s Creed, but I am sure that L will find an appropriate battle for this guy to participate in.

~Marvel Series 1 Mega Blocks Blind Pack (~$4): This is a perfect stocking stuffer for L!  And while I wanted to open it up for the picture, I resisted the urge so L could do it himself on Christmas morning.

~Arkham Asylum Sticky Notes (~$5): Love this! From the front it looks like a little journal, but inside is a bunch of sticky notes. I love sticky notes and use them all the time, so these are great.

~Nerd Block Slap Watch (~$7): We actually just got one of these (but smaller) in this month’s Nerd Block Jr.  I will probably save this for a bit until L breaks the other one he got.

~Stuffed Brain Cell ($9.95): This also came in one of our Nerd Block Jr.’s in the past, but I do not mind the double. I know they also sent out stuffed STD’s before and I would much refer more brain cells than an STD.  LOL!!!

~Deadpool T-Shirt ($9):  I showed L right away because I knew he’d be excited and he was.  And I am excited to add a new non-Minecraft shirt to the mix! Totally perfect and for sure L’s favorite item in the box.

All totaled I came up with an estimated value of $45.93 for the Nerd Block Grab Block.  We really liked the box and would totally get it again if they offered it.  I think we would have LOVED it though if the Funko Pop! had been a superhero too!  That would have been amazing!

The Grab Blocks from Nerd Block are no longer being offered, but if you picked one up (Jr. or Classic) I would love to hear what you got!  And if you want to subscribe to Nerd Block or Arcade Block or Horror Block, you can use one of the following coupon codes to save $5 off your first month:
~Nerd Block Classic: CLASSIC5
~Arcade Block: ARCADE5
~Horror Block: HORROR5

I got this mostly because it was cheap, but I think I’m the wrong kind of nerd for this (I’m a scifi nerd, mostly). Anyway, I got the Arkham notes, which I LOVE, the slap watch and the same Funko – and I’m not really a gamer at all. There was also a Zelda mascot dangle and a Scribblenauts Unmasked figurine – I’m not opening those since I figure they’ll be easier to swap/gift like that. I really liked the t-shirt I got for a second until I realized it was for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. I was a bit too old for that first time around, and can’t see my 41 year old self rocking that. Although I’d totally wear your Deadpool one.

All in all, it was fun for the price, but I definitely won’t be subscribing. I need a scifi and tv nerd specific box, probably! Don’t know if the link will work, but here’s the shirt http://i.ebayimg.com/00/s/MTIwMFgxMjAw/z/RjEAAOSwuMFUaVf1/$_57.JPG

I am definitely the right kind of geek for a good amount of the stuff I’ve heard of people getting so far, though I would definitely be gifting or swapping some as well. If you are 41, you weren’t too old for TMNT on first pass. I am 42 and used to have to get some much older friends to pick up the original comics for me back in junior high since they were then kept by my local shop in the 16 and older section. Back then they were a bit edgier than the later incarnations. Wish someone would do a retro shirt of the turtles and crew back then. All and all, I would probably rather have the Deadpool shirt too.

  2. Shelley

Haha, Chris – The reason I think I’m too old for them is that I spent an entire summer of junior high being a mother’s helper for two little boys who were OBSESSED with the animated show and mannnnnnnnn, did that get very old very fast. =)

    1. Chris in NM

That would definitely put anybody off. I remember being excited that the Turtles were going mainstream, thus meaning more Turtle stuff, and being very disappointed when the cartoon appeared. I was used to the early hand-drawn comic versions and the extremely violent roleplaying game versions and obviously, you know what we got. I had two younger brothers obsessed with the show, so I know where you are coming from about being stuck watching. I had some hope that the new movie might reboot the franchise to its roots, but no such luck.

Waving hi to Chris in NM.

That DeadPool shirt is one of my son’s favorite shirts. I’m managed to hide and wrap his Grab Block although his little brother saw it. Hopefully he will stay quiet about it. My 15 year old son received in his block the Super Mario shirt where Mario is half normal and half skeleton which I think he will like, Funko Pop Iron Man 3 Iron Man which he will love because he is a huge Iron Man fan, Donkey Kong mini racer which will also be a hit, Avengers Series miniblind bag which of course will be a hit, and the nail art thingy that you put your hand on and it forms to your hand. The shirt and POP figure are not repeats. I can’t remember if he got a mini racer or if that was in Nerd Block Jr. I forgot about the slap watch. I wrapped up the whole block as a present for him.

Now I am waiting for the DeadPool cache from Collectible Geek. Chris in NM told me about it and was kind enough to let me know when it came back into stock. It looks like it will be here before Christmas and should be a big hit for my older son.

I also order the Nerd Block Jr Grab Block for my 6 year old. I think that one is arriving next week.

Hi PA Anna! Glad to find out he is so happy about the shirt. Their supplier shorted them on my size, so I am getting the cache minus the shirt and getting the shirt when their replacements come in. They are giving those affected a $10 gift code to make up for it though, so I am really happy with the customer service from them. I found a place that can also do character specific boxes on demand. jandkstuff.com, the letters standing for the first initials of the couple who run the collectibles store offer what they call their boxes of stuff. They have a bunch of options, and one can customize as much as one wants. You select details like the gender of the person getting the box and their shirt size, price from $10 to $100 and then put in whatever other customizations you want in the form like prefers figures and wearables, no trading cards, or Deadpool items only. They take the info and put together a mystery box from their stock and items they can order and then send it off. I haven’t tried one yet, but I have heard nothing but good about them. I heard of them in a top 5 mystery box services at gofigure.com which is a figures collectable site. I was going to order a couple as Christmas gifts, but unfortunately the turnaround time is 3-5 weeks, but I am keeping them in mind for birthdays and am very tempted to order a Star Wars or Lord of the Rings one for myself. I keep hoping that one of the sites will do a review of one of their boxes, but I supose since they aren’t really a subscription site, they might not fit well enough for review.

        Chris in NM,

My bad. I was referring to the Dead Pool shirt that Jennifer V. received in the Nerd Block Grab Block. It is the one where he is the king.

My son is eagerly waiting for his Dead Pool cache which is arriving on Saturday. He can’t wait. I’m impressed with the excellent customer service that they gave you although it must be hard to wait for the shirt.

Thank you for the jandkstuff.com recommendation. I checked it out and may use it to order him a birthday gift in a few months. He’ll

        1. PA Anna

It cut me off. He’ll be 16.

Wouldn’t be the first time I got mixed up in one of these comment discussions. Probably won’t be the last either. I am glad you didn’t get one of those emails, actually I got two emails one from each of the partners who started the company, about the shirt issue. I think it only happened with particular sizes. they offered a choice between holding the cache and sending as is with the shirt to follow, so I went the latter route. I would have forgiven such an issue anyway as long as there was communication about it, the apology gift code is an example of really good customer service IMO. I am definitely going to order one of those boxes of stuff eventually. If not as gifts, I will eventually give in and get myself one. I sent one of the owners an email with some questions and he was very fast to replay and was very honest, one of the first things he was clear on was that they couldn’t make Christmas at this point. I appreciate that.

Anyway, merry Christmas to you and yours. My grab block was supposed to be delivered today, but the USPS site still says out for delivery even though the mail was delivered hours ago. Here’s hoping for tomorrow. If I am lucky enough to get the Deadpool shirt, I’ll definitely be posting about it here.

This was our first nerd block, and it is basically going to be my stepsons stocking. I was super pleased.
We got a Starlord funko and a Guardians of the Galaxy mixtape shirt. So even though it was a grab bag, we ended up with stuff that goes together.

  5. Jenny

I wish I would have grabbed one of these. I saw them offer them but things were crazy and I forgot. N would have loved everything in there. He is obessesed with Funko POP stuff and vinylmation stuff so perfect for him. He is getting a good little collection going in his room and is getting some more Disney ones for Christmas 😉 I cashed in Disney Movie points for a mystery one. Fun fun.

    1. Chris in NM

Hi. The site I was discussing with PA Anna, collictiblegeek.com don’t offer subscriptions, instead they offer a monthly box, they call them collector’s caches, and one orders it if they want. They also offer a build it yourself cache usually with a similar theme that is smaller, but that one can add extra Funko Pops, Mystery Minis and/or a Funko Wacky Wobbler. The theme for their January Cache is Disney and they have stated that there will not only be two Pop Vinyl’s in the cache, but that one would be one of the oversized ones, I think those are 6 inches? Not sure as I am just starting to collect. The theme of their BYO cache is animation, which opens up the field to Dreamworks Fox animation and all of the others. I don’t know if there might be any Disney in that one or not since the main cache is pure Disney. Anyway, just thought I would let you know in case you might care to take a look.

So, apparently my brain is just absent. I recalled after my last comment that the Deadpool shirt from Nerd Block was part of the first subscription box I got, so I really wouldn’t want to get that one. Luckily, I did not get that repeat, instead I got a Pokemon shirt. Not my usual favorite, but at least not a repeat. Now, for the rest. I got one repeat, a slap watch, though I think it has a different Mario villain on it. Will probably gift that one as I did the first. Even if I was into slap watches, I would need a braille slap watch, so I have a couple of good stocking stuffers. I got a squishy little star that I guess is from Mario? My favorite items were one of those little pin sculpture things, can’t recall what they are called, the ones with a bunch of little pins kept in place by a clear lucite or plastic pieces that you can press your hand or some other object against to make the pins hold that shape. Very fun, I had a bigger one with metal pins that I got as a birthday present as a teen, this one brought back a lot of memories. The second fave was a Guardians of the Galaxy Pop Vinyl. I got Starlord. Would have preferred Rocket Raccoon, but am happy with anything GoG. Finally, I got the Arkham Asylum stickynote book. Very cool. Love the tiny little stickys. I really like it, but since I don’t really have a use for sticky notes, I think I am going to make the sacrifice and gift it to my sister-in-law who is working on her doctorate in Psychology.

So, in the end, I am really glad I went for the splurge on the extra box. Even my repeat is giftable and I think that, with the exception of the Deadpool shirt and the Iron Man mug, this random box made up of leftovers beat my first Block Classic. Most definitely worth the price. Now I just have to wait for the December Block. Whatever else is coming in it, I am a massive Willow fan, have watched the movie well over a hundred times over the years, and also a big fan of both Val Kilmer and Warwick Davis. If I could be certain I would get one of each autograph, I think I might break down and buy a second block.
