January 2015 Kiwi Crate

Our January 2015 Kiwi Crate arrived  yesterday and I was so excited about this month’s crate that we worked on it right away!

If you aren’t familiar, Kiwi Crate boxes are designed around fun themes and filled with all of the materials and inspiration for hands-on projects for kids ages 3-7. L and I have been doing the projects together for years and every now and then, WB gets in on the action!

The Box

Kiwi Crate ships via FedEx Smart Post and took over a week to arrive this month.  I was actually starting to get a little worried, but it made it!

First Look

In all the months we have been receiving Kiwi Crate, I can only think of one time where I was missing an item.  And that was the explore! magazine, not one of the materials needed for the project. They do a great job making sure everything is included as it should be!

The January Kiwi Crate Theme

The January 2015 Kiwi Crate theme was “Let’s Bake” and included two projects “My Chef Dress-Up” and “My Frosted Cake”.

My Chef Dress-Up included all of the materials needed to decorate your own colorful chef’s hat and apron. It was low on the messiness scale, low on the grownup involvement scale and involved “exploring”, “creating” and “moving – gross”.

L worked on the chef hat for this one on his own white WB and I worked on the apron.  Pretty much WB told me what pattern to use and what crayon to use and I did the rest.  L was so serious about his and wanted to make sure he got it all just right!

Much to my surprise, both boys could not wait to try on the hat and the apron and wanted their picture taken.  I knew L would be into it since he was so into this project, but WB was game as well.  Don’t they look adorable?  I love how it turned out!

Project #2 – My Frosted Cake

My Frosted Cake included all of the materials needed to make a cake with icing clay and fun toppings.  It was high on the messiness scale, medium on the grownup involvement scale and involved “creating”, “exploring” and “moving  – fine”.

My Frosted Cake – In Process

L and I frosted the cake while WB spent his time telling us how much he wanted to eat it.  LOL.  I was super surprised at how easy the clay was to work with it how similar it was to actual frosting.  I need to find out more about it because it was really really neat.

My Frosted Cake – The Final Product

This was probably one of our favorite Kiwi Crate projects to date.  It looks nothing at all like the picture on the information card, but we could have cared less.  We think it’s perfect!  I think L would have frosted a dozen more “cakes” if we had more frosting.  Just a really neat project.

explore!

The explore! magazine includes puzzles, games, stories and additional activities relating to the theme.  This one has a recipe for salt dough, details on an experiment with yeast and a fun snack idea!

We all totally loved this month’s Kiwi Crate and I think it was the most fun we’ve had working on one. It was just such a cool and creative month.

This kiwi crate was the best one we’ve ever done! I loved it just as much as the kids. I was super impressed with the materials, projects and how into it the kids got. LOVE!
