February 2015 Zoobean Subscription Review
February 2015 Zoobean

Zoobean, who kindly sent me this package to review, is a monthly subscription service which helps you build your individual child’s literacy with remarkable children’s books and apps selected just for him or her.  You are able to select between a monthly book delivery service (from $9.99/month) that gives you one hardcover or paperback book each month, along with an app recommendation + literacy guides or a digital service option (from $2.99/month) and receive weekly personalized app + book recommendations that come with literacy guides.

This selection is for L who is 6 years old.  You can check out the review on WB’s February selection here.

The Package

Zoobean ships via USPS Media Mail and took under a week to arrive. I know that L’s selection and WB’s selection ship at the same time, but sometimes they arrive at the same time and other times they arrive days apart.

The Book

The Black Book of Colors

L’s book selection this month was “The Black Book of Colors” (which is listed for $13.84 on Amazon right now).  I have to say, Zoobean picks the best books. I have never seen / heard of this one before, but it’s really cool.  All of the pages are black with only text on them so it forces you and your little one to imagine what you are reading.  The book also has Braille letters to accompany the text and has a full Braille alphabet at the end.  I wouldn’t have know this, but according to Amazon reviews, the Braille is unreadable because it is not raised enough. However, it did give L exposure to Braille which is a good thing.

The App

Dragon Brush

L’s App selection this month was “Dragon Brush“.  It’s $2.99 on iTunes which isn’t crazy, but I think it’s a little young for L. I think he’d play with it once or twice and that would be it.  WB might like it, but not enough to get it.  I would love it if they allowed to to specify the price range of apps you’d like selected for you.  Free, $1-$4, >$4, etc.

The Zoobean plan I received is $16.95, which includes the monthly hardcover book + the digital reading guide + the app selection and app companion.  If you are interested in just the Digital Service, it’s $2.99/month and you will receive a weekly email that includes an expert created Reading Guide or App Companion along with a book or app recommendation.  And then you can pick up the book at the bookstore or borrow it from your local library!
