Harvest Crates Spring 2015 Subscription Box Review

Harvest is a subscription crate containing artisanal food and wine (soon) from wine country. Their crates are filled with the very best that wine country has to offer and sent to you seasonally (four times per year).

The Box

Harvest Crate is HEAVY!  So heavy.  I received mine via USPS Priority Mail, but mine was a review package so I don’t want to say for sure that’s how all shipments are sent.

First Look

Harvest Crates ships in a big wooden carte.  It’s seriously huge and I am so going to reuse this.  For something.

The Information Card

The Spring 2015 Harvest Crates included the following items:

~Hurley Farms Napa Valley Orange Shrub ($8): Before this crate I had no idea what a “shrub” was.  I mean, other than like gardening wise.  But this can be mixed into cocktails or drizzled onto a salad.  It’s described as a “sweetened, vinegar-based syrup” and was amazing.  I would love to try their other flavors.

~Olivier: Toasted Shallot Dark Beer Mustard ($7.50): If I liked mustard I would probably be really excited for this.  But I don’t so it will end up being used at party or something.

~Rustic Bakery: Vanilla Bean Shortbread ($6.95):  Wow.  These cookies are amazing!  They are buttery shortbread cookies and taste delicious.  These plus a cup of coffee in the afternoon?  Incredible.

~Vella Cheese Co. Special Select Dry Monterey Jack (~$10): I don’t totally understand why these cheese doesn’t need to be refrigerated, but it doesn’t.  And it’s good.  Very good.  I would totally pick some of this up in Sonoma!

~Marshall’s Farm: Napa Valley Wildflower Honey: I can’t find a price for this online, but it’s wonderful.  The information card suggests drizzling this on cheese which I may try next.  So far I have just had it on toast!

~Rustic Bakery: Pecan, Rosemary and Cranberry Pan Forte Crostini ($7.95): I tried these straight out of the box and they were okay, but I think they’d be better paired with wine and cheese. The flavor from the crackers needs something (like cheese) to offset it I think.

~The Olive Press: Olio Nouvo: This is described as “fresh, grassy and with a hint of pepper”.  I don’t know that I have ever heard of olive oil described as grassy, but this one is.  I didn’t detect a grassy taste to it personally, but we’ve used it and enjoyed it.  Maybe I need to use it as a dipping sauce to really appreciate it though?

~Zoe’s Meats: Uncured Salami: So good!  I’m telling you, it was good.  It’s got garlic and black pepper so there’s a little kick to it, but don’t too much.

I couldn’t find prices for everything online so I was unable to do a cost breakdown on this box.  It had 8 items in it though so figure you paid slightly over $12 per item?  Broken down that way doesn’t make it seem too bad at all!
