Mantry (aka the Modern Man’s Pantry) is a food of the month club that lets you discover the finest american artisan foods – and gives you ideas of what to do with them. It’s $75/month and has been around since the Fall of 2012. It’s one of the more expensive subscriptions we get, but B loves it!
Mantry ships via USPS Priority Mail and ships around the 20th of the month.
Mantry crates are my favorite subscription box packaging! I just love these wood crates.
I loved this first look. The box looked full and I didn’t recognize anything which is always a good thing.
The August 2015 Mantry theme was “American Desert” and included the following items:
~Cactus Candy Company Cactus Candy ($7.95): B and I tried these as soon as the box arrived yesterday and if I didn’t see the box in advance I would never have known these were made with prickly pear fruit (which is found inside cactus). They are delicious gummy candies. The sugared outside is amazing too.
~Juniper Ridge White Sage & Wild Mint Tea ($13): Well, when I thought this was just tea I wasn’t too excited. However, Mantry suggests making adult popsicles out of these. They recommend steeping the tea in hot water, adding sugar to taste and then adding your favorite liquor and freezing. That kind of tea I like.
~Santa Fe Culinaria Blue Corn Pinon Pancake Mix ($5.20): We haven’t had a big Sunday morning breakfast at home in a while, but now that we have received this mix I think it may inspire one. These are made with a combination of hopi blue corn and piñon pine nuts in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
~Eagle Ranch Garlic Green Chile Pistachios ($5.95): I am not a fan of pistachios and I, actually, I am not sure if B is either? I have never seen him eat any I know that. My mom might light them (and will be able to handle the heat from these) so I will probably pass them on to her.
~Santa Fe Ole Roasted New Mexico Green Chile ($5.80): The burritos that Mantry is showing this on in the recipe book looks amazing. This is a “Medium” sauce that is made with the legendary Hatch Valley green chill. It’s flame roasted, salted and zested with lime.
~People’s Choice Jerky Machaca ($4.50): This is like no jerky I have ever seen. The card says that you can eat it from the package, but it’s got the consistency of sawdust so I am not sure how well that would work. We will likely just use it inside the burritos with the roasted New Mexico green chile sauce.
All totaled I came up with a value of $42.40 for the August 2015 Mantry. While I had no issues with any of the individual products in the crate (I was actually pleased with the fact that there were no repeats), the value on this one was just so low. I don’t expect Mantry to be a “value” subscription, but I also think it should be at least somewhat close to the cost of the box.
