Mantry (aka the Modern Man’s Pantry) is a food of the month club that lets you discover the finest american artisan foods – and gives you ideas of what to do with them. It’s $75/month and has been around since the Fall of 2012.
Mantry ships via USPS Priority Mail and ships around the 20th of the month. Mantry may not have the highest value boxes, but they do a great job of shipping in a timely manner.
Mantry always comes packed in a beautiful wooden crate. B uses them for storage in his basement bar and I have a few in my office. They are one of the best parts of this subscription.
The first look revealed, well, nothing. Mantry crates are always heavy and this one was no exception. They do a great job packaging everything as well. In the years we’ve been getting Mantry, we have only had one or two little mishaps. Which is pretty good considering all of the glass products they send out.
The September 2015 Mantry theme was “Biergarten” and included the following items you may need after a day of Bavarian boozing:
~Vosges Smoke & Stout Caramel Bar ($7.50): This is a delicious chocolate bar! It’s not nearly as smokey as I expected it to be. It’s a dark chocolate bar with a smoke & stout caramel filling. It’s incredible.
~Schaller & Weber Alpine Soppressata ($7.99): Mantry always seems to include a meat of some sort and B loves it. This one is an air dried sausage made with good Berkshire pork. I have really need into meet and cheese plates lately, but I know B will end up using it for chili.
~Mixedmade Trees Knees Spicy Syrup (13.5oz) ($13.99): This is clearly a B item. It has a maple syrup base and is gently infused with a chili peppers to create a perfect sweet and sour mix. You can use it in anything from cocktails to on your morning oatmeal or eggs. Or even pizza.
~Mustard and Co. Black Truffle Mustard ($7): Ahh, mustard. I have a feeling everyone on the planet loves mustard (and tea for that matter) because it’s in so many subscription boxes. Everyone but me though. It makes sense to include it because they include a recipe for Spicy Maple Glazed Bratwurst with Black Truffle Mustard which seems to fit this month’s theme perfectly.
~Haldeman Mills Soft Pretzel Mix (~$8.50): Now this has my name all over it. And the kids names too. I cannot wait to make pretzels with them! I need to get some dipping sauces (not mustard) for these and we’re making them this weekend!
~Bulls Bay Saltworks Smoked Sea Salt ($10): This salt comes from the South Carolina seashore and is then harvested by letting it dry in the southern sun and smoke over oak chips. I tried this alone and it’s perfect. I know exactly what salt we will be using on our pretzels.
All totaled I came up with a value of $54.98 for the September 2015 Mantry. Not a crazy high value by any means, but it’s a solid value for Mantry. As much as B loves Mantry, I think we are going to take a break for awhile and try a few new subscriptions out in its place.
