Koala Crate is from Kiwi Crate’s new(ish) line of crates and is designed for preschoolers ages 3-4. The box includes all the materials and inspiration for projects related to a theme such as colors, transportation or safari. Crates are designed to give children exposure to new materials and new concepts that encourage hands-on learning and fun.
Koala Crate ships via FedEx Smart Post and took about a week to arrive. Sometimes they ship mid-month and sometimes (like in September) they ship closer to the end of the month.
I was so busy in September that I didn’t even get a chance to look at any reviews of sneak peeks into this box. Opening it was a surprise for WB and I.
The September 2015 Koala Crate theme was “playground” and included three activities: “balancing seesaw”, “jigsaw puzzle” and “chalk games”.
Project #1 – “Balancing Seesaw”
The first project WB and I worked on was “My Balancing Seesaw” which included all of the items you needed to build a seesaw to balance wooden beads and crayons. It was low on the messiness scale, low on the grownup involvement scale and involved “moving – fine” and “discovering”.
I have to say, I am not totally sure WB “got” this. We talked about making it balance and using the different wooden beads to even it out, but he just looked at me like what? I think he actually preferred when it wasn’t even.
Project #2 – Jigsaw Puzzle
The second project we worked on was “jigsaw puzzle” which consisted of coloring and putting together a picture of Kellan and friends at the playground. This product was medium on the messiness scale (I actually thought it was low), low on the grownup involvement scale and involved “creating” and “moving – fine:”.
Now WB was all over this one. Coloring in the lines doesn’t interest him at all, but he’s all over puzzles and happily put this together. I think the stackable crayons they included were SO cool, but found them a little hard to color with. Maybe because it’s not what I am used to? WB didn’t say anything either way about them so it’s probably just me.
Project #3 – Chalk Games
The final activity in the box was “chalk games” which allowed subscribers to play outdoor games and make pictures for creative fun with chalk. This activity is medium on the messiness scale, medium on the grownup involvement scale and involved “moving – fine” and “moving – gross”. We haven’t used this specific chalk yet, but we play with chalk on the sidewalk / driveway all the time and both of my boys love it.
imagine!
Koala Crate also includes the imagine! magazine. “imagine!” includes stories, mazes and other fun activities relating to the theme. It’s a great addition to the crate and allows you to continue with the theme long after you have finished the projects.
What do you think of Koala Crate? I love that Kiwi Crate branched out into some different ages groups because this one is just right for WB. We love it! If you are interested in subscribing you can sign up here and use the coupon code “SHARE10” to save $10 off your first box!
