Mantry (aka the Modern Man’s Pantry) is a food of the month club that lets you discover the finest american artisan foods – and gives you ideas of what to do with them. It’s $75/month and has been around since the Fall of 2012.
Mantry ships via USPS Priority Mail and ships around the 20th of the month. Mantry may not have the highest value boxes, but they do a great job of shipping in a timely manner.
Mantry always comes packed in a beautiful wooden crate. B uses them for storage in his basement bar and I have a few in my office. They are one of the best parts of this subscription.
I thought I knew what was coming in this box, but I realized I was totally wrong when I opened it up. I must have been looking at older Mantry boxes on Instagram.
The October 2015 Mantry theme was “Street Food Vol. 2” and included the following items:
~Salty Road Salted Mango Lassi Taffy ($6.50): I love Salty Road taffy and have tried a bunch of their flavors, but this is a new one for me. It’s tropical flavored (citrus?) with nice dose of salt. I’m a fan.
~Lawless Jerky Pho Beef Jerky ($5.99): This jerky is made with grass-fed beef, no fillers and no flavor-boosting nitrates or MSG. It has a little brown sugar, real pho herbs like anise, cinnamon and cloves and a “big pinch of jalapeño”. Totally a B item!
~Vermont Maple Sriracha Maple Sriracha Verde ($9.99): The information card describes this as a “curious sauce” and I would have to agree with that. It’s a mix of peppers, spices and real maple syrup. The booklet suggests using this in a chicken dish and I think that sounds fabulous.
~Balsamic Nectar ($24.57): This is easily my favorite item in the box. It’s a balsamic nectar made in Colorado that can be used as a salad dressing, on meats, vegetables or on a traditional bruschetta. It’s all natural with no additives, preservatives or added flavoring.
~Clif Family Kitchen Lemon Ginger Almonds ($8): These are another all B item. I love the smell of roasted almonds but I am not that into the taste. The lemon and ginger make these interesting, but I’m still not in love.
~Masala Pop Chai Masala Popcorn ($5): This is definitely a spicy popcorn! I didn’t taste it at first, but wow, once it hit, it hit! It’s good though and it’s something that you don’t need a ton of to be satisfied. At least I didn’t.
All totaled I came up with a value of $60.05 for the October 2015 Mantry. That’s actually quite a good value for Mantry and I liked the contents / curation of the box, but I think we are going to take a break for a few months and maybe subscribe again after the new year.
