Wine Awesomeness Review + 1/2 Off First Box Offer!Wine Awesomeness ($45/month) is your humble guide for buying, discovering and learning about wine. They are a modern, souped-up version of a wine club, taking WA Members on a themed, wine-fueled adventure each month (i.e., the Monthly Journey). Your expertly-curated wine (3 bottles) shows up at your door paired with their mini-magazine thebacklabel: a booklet containing awesome content, recipes, perfect playlists and articles to help you learn all about the vino you’re about to fall in love with.  Also available is a 6 bottle plan for $75/month. You are able to select your wine preference (red, white or combination) as well.  I opted for the combo box.

Wine Awesomeness ships via FedEx each month.  One note – you do have to sign for your delivery, so make arrangements in advance.

The idea of shipping wine actually makes me nervous, but Wine Awesomeness clearly knows what they are doing because everything arrives in perfect condition.

Each Wine Awesomeness shipment includes the mini “thebacklabel” magazine.  It includes information on each of the wines included in the box, details on the region the wines come from, pairing recipes, etc.

The California Roadtrip (which is always the first box in your Wine Awesomeness journey) included the following:

~2014 Capretta Pinot Gris: Capretta is a fruity white from the Central California Coast.  It has notes of citrus oil, ripe ear, cantaloupe, marzipan, honeyed lemon and litchi.  I brought all these wines to Easter dinner over the weekend so that my cousins could sample them too.  We didn’t use any of the pairing suggestions (this is supposed to pair well with Linguine Clams), but we all thought this was a good one.  It wasn’t overly sweet and was a very drinkable wine.

~2014 Ironstone Cabernet Franc: Oh goodness.  Where do I even begin with this one?  It’s described as “juicy and fresh with a little tannin”.  We did not find it to be any of those things. It was very dry and acidic and we thought it tasted a bit woody?  I don’t even think any of us could get a full glass down?  This one just wasn’t for us. And yes, I know that drinking out of plastic cups isn’t really the way to test wine, but we would have went through way too many glasses otherwise.

~2013 Pellegrini Chardonnay: This Chardonnay is from Sonoma County, CA and has notes of bartlett pear, lemon-lime, Gala apple, hazelnut, hay, nougat, marzipan and ocean mist. This was our favorite of the bunch without question. It was refreshing and delicious.  The pairing recipe with this one was for Pan-Seared Sea Scallops which would have been incredible!  I think we would have all been happy with two bottles of this in the box.

I didn’t do a price breakdown on Wine Awesomeness, but I am happy with my subscription and plan to continue with it!
