Koala Crate is from Kiwi Crate’s line of crates and is designed for preschoolers ages 3-4.  The box includes all the materials and inspiration for projects related to a theme such as colors, transportation or safari. Crates are designed to give children exposure to new materials and new concepts that encourage hands-on learning and fun.

The April 2016 Koala Crate theme is “farm” and included three projects “vegetable garden”, “barnyard finger puppets” and “barn tote”.

Project #1 – Vegetable Garden

Vegatable Garden provided the materials necessary to harvest your vegatables and play a matching game. It involved “creating” and “moving – fine”.  It was low on the messiness scale and medium on the grownup involvement scale.

W (my 4 year-old) was more into planting the vegetables than he was into playing the matching game (there are two sets of carrots, potatoes, radishes and turnips), but we thought this was adorable.  We talked about each of the vegetables while we planted them as agreed that we both like carrots and potatoes, but aren’t big on radishes and turnips.

Project #2 – Barnyard Finger Puppets

Barnyard Puppets allows subscribers to create four cute animal finger puppers to live in their barn. It involved “moving – fine” and “exploring” and was low on the messiness scale and medium on the grownup involvement scale.

We decided to make the “Classic” versions of the animals.  We have done some similiar crafts and have swapped out noses and mouths for some of the animals.  But we went tradtional with this one.  W was thrilled he was able to get all of the animals on one hand too.

Project #3 – Barn Tote

The third project in the box involved making a carrying case and play mat for your puppets and garden.  It involved “discovering” and “moving – fine” and was low on the messiness scale and medium on the grownup involvement scale.

I thought this was absolutely adorable.  It held the puppets and the garden and was just a cute overally barn.  We did have some issues getting it to start closed, but I think we just need to glue down one of the velcor pieces. It unfolds into a grass mat to grow your vegetables on too.

imagine! Magazine

As usual, the box also contained an “imagine!” magazine. It has puzzles, stories, games and other project idea relating to this month’s theme.
