Koala Crate July 2016 Subscription Box Review + Coupon Code

Koala Crate is from Kiwi Crate’s line of crates and is designed for preschoolers ages 3-4.  The box includes all the materials and inspiration for projects related to a theme such as colors, transportation or safari. Crates are designed to give children exposure to new materials and new concepts that encourage hands-on learning and fun.

Koala Crate ships via FedEx Smart Post and usually takes about a week to arrive to me. My July Kiwi Crate boxes shipped super late, in fact, I didn’t get them until early August.  Unfortunately, they didn’t send out any communication about the delay – I had to e-mail them to find out they had a sourcing issue.  If a box is going to ship a week or more late, I think it’s only right that they send out an e-mail.  I do think some people got their boxes on time this month, though.

The July Koala Crate theme was Rainbows and included three projects “Stained Glass Art”, “Rainbow-Dyed Tote Bag” and “Cloud Pillow”.

Project #1 – Cloud Pillow

The first project we worked on was “Cloud Pillow”. It was low on the messiness scale, medium on the grownup involvement scale and involved moving-fine and creating.

This project was fun and easy!  The first step was to make the rainbow.  It’s all just sticky felt pieces layered on top of each other.  My 4-year-old (W) did it all on his own and needed no help from me.  Stuffing the pillow needs to explanation and then it’s all done!  It has a velcro closure – no sewing or buttoning required.

Project #2 – Rainbow-Dyed Tote Bag

The second project was to create a rainbow-dyed tote bag. This project was medium on the messiness scale, high on the grown-up involvement scale and involved discovering and moving – fine.

Our bag is much cuter in person than in pictures, I swear!  To dye it we lined up our tissue paper squares and then got them wet using the included water dropper.  W LOVED this part and could have spent all day dropping the water on.  He was so careful!  We had to wait overnight until it dried and then we removed what was left of the issue paper squares and added the cloud stickers.  It doesn’t look so wrinkly in person and would probably look even better if I tossed it in the dryer.

Project #3 – Stained Glass Art

The third and final project was Stained Glass Art.  This project was low on the messiness scale, medium on the grownup involvement scale and involved creating and discovering.

My older son (he’s 8) helped out with this one too.  The first step was to make your “scene” with the included shapes on the clear sticky background.  And then you add the colored tissue to finish your piece.  I think ours turned out great and W was really pleased with the final product.  I don’t know what he was expecting, but it wasn’t this ;).

imagine! Magazine

As usual, the box also contained an “imagine!” magazine. It has puzzles, stories, games and other project idea relating to this month’s theme.
