The January 2017 Bokksu theme is “Maru” and included the following items:
~Baumkuchen: Baumkuchen is a German roll cake that is super popular in Japan. And I can see why. I sampled the “plain” one, and it’s amazing. Plain would not be the word I described it as at all. The cake is soft and flavorful and somehow, even though it came out of a plastic package, tasted so fresh!
~Ka No Michi: These were another win! Well, the chocolate one was anyway. It tasted like a big Oreo, but with a smoother cookie. The box also included “Vanilla” and “Matcha.” I suspect the Vanilla will be equally as delicious as the chocolate (well Cocoa), but the Matcha? I don’t know about that ;).
~Gaufrettes: We have gotten these in Bokksu boxes before (at least I know I have tried them somewhere) and they are good, but not quite as good as the other stuff in here so far. We received three flavors (Vanilla, Strawberry, and Chocolate) and, you guessed it, my favorite is Chocolate.
~Cheese Manju Okashinai: Manju is a traditional Japenese confection made with flour, rice powder, and buckwheat. It has a white bean and cheese filling and, I’ll be honest, that description made me think about not even trying it. But you guys, it was good! SO good. And the little smiley face made me like it even more.
~Kaisen Usukeshi Kasen: Now these were a miss for me. The crispy senbei is twice-baked using deep ocean shrimp, and shrimp crackers are always a no with me.
~Natural Yeast Bread Hokkaido Cream: Oh my goodness. This was magical. It reminded me somewhat of these amazing rolls we get at a local restaurant. It’s delicious fluffy bread layered with a cream made using milk from the Tokachi district of Hokkaido. Just a huge YES on this.
~Gyokuro Green Tea: Each Bokksu also includes a tea pairing. This has a rich flavor due to the process used to harvest the leaves.
