Kiwi Crate ships via FedEx Smart Post and usually takes about a week to arrive to me.

W (my 4-year-old) and I worked on this one together.  He still needs quite a bit of help with the projects, but he loves working on them.

The January 2017 Kiwi Crate theme was “Physics Carnival” and included four projects: “Make Your Own Stamps,” “Amazing Balancing Acrobat,” “Mysterious Dancing Tumbler” and “Carnival Catapult.”

Project #1 – Make Your Own Stamps

Make Your Own Stamps included materials to build a stamp wheel and stamp a pattern. It was medium on the messiness scale and low on the grownup involvement scale.

Obviously, this was a huge hit.  We used plain paper, the carnival art sheet, more plain paper; you name it.  W had no problem peeling the foam shapes and placing them on the stamp sticks/rollers.

Project #2 – Amazing Balancing Acrobat

The second project we worked on was Amazing Balancing Acrobat. It was medium on the messiness scale and medium on the grownup involvement scale.

We found that balancing was much easier with the eraser weights on than it was without them.  L (my 8-year-old) was able to get it to balance without the erasers, but W could only do it with the erasers on.

Project #3 – Mysterious Dancing Tumbler

Mysterious Dancing Tumbler including the materials necessary to make a flipping tumbler.  It was low on the messiness scale and low on the grownup involvement scale.

It worked!  I can’t believe it worked.  I was very skeptical, but it really did flip on it’s on when I tilted the board.  I did have to assemble this myself (and film the video and flip it at the same time myself), but W was amazed by how it worked.

Project #4 – Carnival Catapult & Target

The final project was to build and play a carnival knock-down game.  Carnival Catapult was medium on the messiness scale and medium on the grownup involvement scale.

As you can see this was W’s favorite project in the box.  He LOVED catapulting the ball and trying to hit the target.  He also tried to get the ball into a bucket, he tried to aim it at various things around the house, at Buddy, at me, at L, you name it!  We are still playing with this!

explore! Magazine

As usual, the explore! magazine includes puzzles, games, recipes, experiments, stories and additional activities relating to the theme.
