I am far from a teen/tween, but I subscribe to Doodle Crate for myself.  I typically find the projects to be (fairly) simple, fun to do and relaxing.

The June 2017 Doodle Crate explored the technique “Making Mosaics” and included the materials necessary to make your own Wooden Desk Organizer.  The box includes full instructions, but if you feel stuck, they also have a YouTube video for each project.

This month’s box included a foam base, mosaic guide, box panels, mosaic tiles, dividers, glue, a glue cup, and inserts.  Additional items which the instruction booklet says are needed were scissors, scrap paper and a muffin tin (optional).  I actually didn’t use any of those items.

Step #1 – Design the Mosaics

The first step was to design your mosaic pattern.  I opted to skip this step.  I figured I could save a little time and design on the fly!

Step #2 – Make the Mosaics / Step #3 – Build the Organizer

This was my favorite part!  I loved deciding on a pattern on gluing down my pieces.

As I neared the end, I realized I didn’t have enough of the pieces I needed to finish my design.  I would have known this had a planned out the design in advance (as called for in the instructions), but it wouldn’t have mattered because I would have gone ahead with it anyway.

I ended up using two triangle tiles in place of each additional diamond tile I needed.  It worked out perfectly, and you can barely tell the difference.  There is another panel on the reverse side that can also be designed, but I was torn on what I wanted to do with it, so I passed for now.   I don’t have enough pieces to do the same design I did above, and I am not sure I want to switch it up.  I would put this against a wall anyway, so it doesn’t matter if one side is empty.

Step #4 – Get Organized

The box included a variety of dividers, so you customize it however you like!

Also included were a variety of inserts to help you keep organized. Everything fit perfectly and was super easy to do.

I loved how this project turned out!  The organizer is sturdy and usable, and I think it looks great.  I also had a great time working on it, which makes me like it even more.
