I am far from a teen/tween, but I subscribe to Doodle Crate for myself.  I typically find the projects to be (fairly) simple, fun to do and relaxing.

The August 2017 Doodle Crate explored the technique “Glue-Resist Fabric Painting” and included the materials necessary to make your own Handpainted Canvas Pouches.  The box includes full instructions, but if you feel stuck, they also have a YouTube video for each project.

Materials

This month’s box included canvas pouches, paint, paint brush, string, practice swatch, glue, wooden cuff, gel pens, wooden tags, sticks, mess mat and pouch inserts. Not provided, but needed, items included water, paper towels, a baking dish and scissors.

Step #1 – Gluing 101 & Step #2 – Draw A Resist Resin

The first step was to practice your gluing technique.  The box included a canvas swatch to test out your ideas / pattern on.  I skipped this skip as I tend to do with most of the practice steps.  Sometimes this is okay (as it was in this case) and sometimes I should have practiced ;).

I picked some simple / fun patterns and got to work.  This step took all of five minutes?  I followed the instructions and let the glue dry overnight.

Step #3 – Paint the Fabric

Next up?  Painting!  I forgot to put the canvas insert in my pouches to protect the paint from bleeding, but it ended up being okay.  Just a tad soaked through.  Painting was fun (and easy) and I let it dry overnight before moving on to the next step.

Step #4 – Remove the Resist

I have to tell you, at this point I absolutely did not think the resin (glue) would be coming off this pouch.  But I followed the instructions and soaked the pouches for about an hour.

Doodle Crate Review + Coupon Code - August 2017Much to my surprise, it worked!  I followed the instructions and rubbed the pouch together and the resin disappeared.  The booklet said to be ready to scrub, but I had no issues getting it all off.

All Done
Doodle Crate Review + Coupon Code - August 2017I love how these turned out!  I added the zipper pulls after they dried and couldn’t be happier with this project.  It was fun, turned out great and the pouches are useful.

You can use this same technique to make t-shirts! For the hunger games premiere my friend and I made “Team Peeta” shirts by printing out a cute font and slipping it under a shirt that had cardboard to protect the back. We traced over the font with glue, let dry and then dip dyed them in buckets in our dorm basement. Tossed them in the laundry and all the glue came off and we had fun cheap custom fan girl shirts! Plus its just fun.
