Best Ways to Beat the Heat

In honor of the dogs days of summer which have us sweltering, I thought it would be fun if we all shared our favorite ways to beat the heat.

  1. Head to the movies.  Movie theaters are one of the few places you may need to bring a sweater on those 90 degree days since they always seem to be freezing. But that’s okay.  It will be a welcome break!
  2. Go camping.  In your basement.(*)  I don’t know about you, but I do not want to sleep in a tent that has been baking outside in the sun (or even one that has been sitting in the shade) all day.  Talk about stuffy.  And sweaty.  Instead, set up that tent in your basement and camp out down there.  Get some glow in the dark stars for the ceiling, cook up some Smores Bars and tell stories around the flashlight.  It’s just like real camping.  Except better.  And cooler.
  3. Have a water fight with your new 75% (or 90% if you are lucky) Banzai Water Blasters and then come inside and make snow cones with your new Sunbeam snow cone maker, which you also found on clearance.
  4. Couldn’t find a snow cone maker at Target?  Then get our your Zoku Quick Pop Maker and get to work on some refreshing pops.  I wouldn’t mind a lemonade pop right now.
  5. No fancy in-ground pool?  No problem.  Fill up the kiddie pool, grab a giant golf umbrella, a good book and a drink, hop in and relax.  Who cares if your neighbors think your nuts?
  6. If all else fails you can sit in the air-conditioned house in your underwear and watch Sponge Bob.
  7. And when you get bored with all of that, go back outside and get sweaty all over again.  We’ll be begging for this kind of weather come January, so we have to take enjoy it as much as we can now!

What are some of your favorite ways to beat the heat?  Or do you just go outside and embrace it??

(*) I hear people outside of the midwest don’t always have basements? What is this all about?? And why not? Basements rule. If you don’t have a basement, where do you store all of your stuff??? (*)

Down south, the water table is too high to have basements.

That is too bad. Do you guys have basements where you are at? Looks like I am never going to be able to move to the south. I love my basement!

What I wouldn’t do for a basement!! We have a gameroom in our garage and all of our storage goes in the attack. It totally blows!! I love you camping idea though! Wish I could do it!!

I love this heat and can’t get enough of it (however, I would NEVER camp in it…or any other weather for that matter…not my thing). Sadly my time to soak up the rays is limited to Maddy napping…she does not seem to enjoy it like her Mommy does! My mom really wants a Zoku for the grandkids. Where did you find it (maybe I need to go back and reread your blog about it-lol-sorry!)?

I got mine at Sur La Table. They have them at Williams Sonoma too!

Oh, and do you think anyone on our side of the family has ever gone camping? Wait, I bet Mike has. I know we don’t and I know your family doesn’t! Cindy, where are you?? Do you camp?? I am going with NO!

I totally miss basements!! I loved ours growing up. Our area of NC only has basements if your house is built on a hill and it can be a walk-out basement (which are awesome!). I think it has something to do with the water table being too high. I was really bummed when we started looking for houses and learned that basements are do uncommon around here. :(. They try to make up for it by offering a “bonus room”, which is usually an oddly shaped room above the garage or part of the attic. It is nowhere near ad awesome as a basement because when it’s hot outside, the bonus room is the hottest room in the house..,and vice versa in the winter. I miss basements… 🙁

That is sad :(. I could never move to a basement free zone. I am lucky enough to have a bonus room above the garage and a basement!

Oh yeah, and having no basement means there is NO extra place to store your stuff! That REALLY sucks!! If you can’t fit it in the attic, in the crawl space, or in your closets then you better get creative! Even the “beloved” bonus rooms don’t have closets…hence they cannot be called bedrooms. Yes…basements are awesome…glad you appreciate them!! I took them for granted, I guess…
