Composting 101

I mentioned last week in my Weekend Wrap-Up that we had gotten a composter and promised more details. I actually don’t know too much, but I’m going to write about it anyways.

First we bought a composter.  I suppose you could make one somehow, but that is way above my head.  So we bought one.  It’s got the days of the week on it, so you know if you properly turned it or not?  I can’t think of any other reason the days of the week would be in it, so that’s my guess.

Pretty much as soon as we got it home, B followed me around the house asking me if I thought the strawberries in the fridge were bad, if I was going to get that banana in the fruit bowl, etc.  It took me a while, but I finally got the hint and figured out that he wanted to compost something.  After I told him to take whatever, the boys headed outside to get to work.

I must not be very bright, because I was under the impression that composting just meant throwing all of your table scraps, etc. into a bin.  I never really knew (or cared) what would happen to it after that.  But B nicely dumbed it down for me and explained that you get soil from composting.  You need a nice balance of nitrogen (food scraps, grass clippings, etc.) and carbon (dead leaves, shredded newspaper, etc.) though.  Oh, okay, so you get something at the end of all this huh?  I thought we just “got” the satisfaction of doing something green.
So B and L added all of the necessary “ingredients” to the composter and then added water (I have no clue what this is for).  L was more than excited to help make dirt and an education lesson outdoors never hurt anyone.
Our compost is now happily cooking outside in the sun and I am pretty sure it has been loving this hot weather.  It gets so warm inside there that you can feel the heat as soon as you open it.  Not that I do that often since though since it totally stinks.  I only made Bryan open it so I could take a picture of it.  I believe it takes around 4 weeks for a batch to be completed.  I will be sure to update with a picture when it is all done baking.  In the mean time, if you have any questions, don’t ask me since I clearly have no clue!  This project has B’s name written all over it!

I have a compost pile. And it started out just as that. A pile of veggie waste out in the woods, until Maggie decided that compost is yummy and started dragging it all over the yard and bringing it up on my door mat. Now it is enclosed in chicken wire. I turn it over with a pitch fork once every few weeks and call it good. But now there are onions and pumpkins growing in it and I dont want to turn it over and kill them. And Maggie sometimes stands at the new compost fence and barks at the compost. I am not sure why!

Ha! I love that Maggie barks at the compost. Maybe it is evil compost?
