This weeks Things I Love Thursdays is all about “The D”. My city. It gets a bad rap in the national media, but I can promise you it’s not all bad. Sure there are neighborhoods you don’t want to drive through at night (some probably not even during the day), but most big cities have the same issues. So whatever. Get over it and enjoy my city! Here are some of my favorite things in Detroit:
American Coney Island: I honestly don’t know what people in other states have for lunch. There are tons of Coney Island‘s in the Metro Detroit area (American and Lafayette are the best) and they are always busy. What are they known for? Well, Coney Dogs of course. I personally love the Chicken Lemon Rice soup and with a side of pita bread. Pretty sure I know what I want for dinner!
MGM Grand Detroit: There are three casinos in Detroit, MGM Grand Detroit, Greektown and Motor City. All of which have hotels. But MGM is my favorite by far. I don’t think I win more there or anything, but it’s the fanciest and we get good comps. I may be the only one, but I totally wouldn’t mind if Detroit turned into a mini Las Vegas.
Comerica Park: Not too many things are better than spending a warm summer afternoon watching a Tigers game at Comerica Park. Even if you don’t even really like baseball, it’s a good time. Trust me. If you aren’t having fun on a sitting back with a drink in hand letting the sun hit your face, clearly you need help.
Greektown: “Greektown” is a business district in Detroit with shops and restaurants. Yep, Greentown Casino is in Greektown and so is some yummy Greek food (I like Pegasus). You can also get some amazing pizza at Pizza Papalis and no trip to Greentown would be complete without a beer (or ten) at Old Shillelagh.
The People Mover: The People Mover is not one of my favorites, but it is L’s all time favorite thing in “The D”. It basically goes no where. Want to take it to Comerica Park or Ford Field (home of the Detroit Lions)? Sorry, doesn’t go there. Want to take it to MGM Grand or Motor City Casino? Sorry, doesn’t go there! But you could take it from Greentown to Joe Louis (home of the Detroit Red Wings). Or you could just do what L likes to do and take it on a joy ride around the city. For $0.75 you can ride in a circle as many times as you want (as long as you don’t get off). I’ll admit, it is fun to look across the river to Canada.
Have you ever visited Detroit? What was your favorite part? Or if you are a local, what do you love?
We have a coney island in MA, BEST hot dogs in the ENTIRE world!
Love the D! When you blog about it, it makes me so happy to be from Michigan and to go there so often for sports, concerts, dinner, etc. Oh, and I LOVE me a Coney Island (and diners, I LOVE diners!!) – coney dogs, taco salad, even a grilled cheese – mmmmmmmmmmmmmm!
Awe! Love this post. Lately, I can’t get that song out of my head….”it’s so cold in the D..” not sure if you heard it. I only saw it from someone’s post on FB and now it’s implanted on my brain forever. 😉 Can’t wait to come back to the D this summer!
I love the Riverfront…the kids like to run through the fountain and ride the carousel. And as beat up as it is, I love Belle Isle. We try to get there every summer.
Visiting the D in August for a wedding… might be able to talk Ryan into riding the People Mover in circles!
I am cracking up! Make sure to bring your $0.75!!!!!
Comerica Park sucks.
You should have more frozen drinks. It gets funner and funner the more you drink!
Hamtramck is my favorite. I LOVE going to Polish Village for dinner. Potatoe pancakes are to die for. After I get some delicious cookies from a bakery!
I love eastern market and I don’t plant a lot of flowers and Mexican village is yummy
I also love lemon chicken rice soup with pita. Just ask B.
