My thredUp selections

I’d heard of thredUP before (and had heard good things), so they contacted me and asked if I wanted to give them a try I jumped at the chance. If you aren’t familar, thredUP is an online consignment boutique. You can go on thredUP and browse thousands of like-new clothing items, which have been hand-selected and certified for quality. You can also ship them clothing your family (kids, juniors and womens) has outgrown to thredUP and get paid when the items are sold.

The Package

My thredUP selections arrived in my mailbox very quickly after I ordered them. I’d guess it only took a few days?  It was fast and I was impressed.  I browsed around on thredUP and opted to select two pieces for L. It look me forever to decide because they had SO many cute things to pick from.  Seriously.  SO many.  It was way easy to sort by brand, size, color, etc. though.  Way easier than flipping through racks at a store.  Plus, you didn’t even have to leave the house!

First Look

thredUP had everything packaged very nicely and I was quite impressed. It was just as if (actually better) I’d bought it a fancy boutique and they wrapped it in tissue for me.

Here are the items I selected along with the thredUP prices:

~Striped Polo by Ralph Lauren Polo ($10.49):  I went for this because it’s totally something I would buy for L at full price!  Plus, it said on thredUP that it had a tiny flaw and I wanted to see for myself what a tiny flaw meant to them.  Umm, it means tiny.  I can’t even find it.  The shirt arrived clean and in great condition.  It was exactly how it was described / shown online.

~GAP Sweat Shorts ($9.49): When I saw these I KNEW I had to get them for L. He loves dressing like B and B has shorts just like these so I was sold.  These really are like new and I know that once I give them to L these will be his new favorite pair of shorts.

I was totally thrilled with my first thredUP experience and will for sure be using them again. While I was browsing (again) last night, I realized that you can not only sort by item, size, etc. you can also sort by family.  Maybe you really like a certain piece and it’s totally your style. Well you can click “other items from this family” and see everything they have sent to thredUP!  So cool.  I am even thinking about sending a bag of clothing there to see what happens.  I have SOOOOOOO many clothes for the boys that this just might be the perfect solution.

What do you think of thredUP?  Have you ever bought / sold anything with them?  If you are interested in trying or just want to learn more, click here.  And don’t forget to use code “THRED10” to save $10 off your first order!

Disclosure: I received a $20 credit to thredUP.com to spend on whatever I wished.  All opinions are my own and no compensation was received for this post!

I just ordered a bag from them to send items in. It’s embarrassing how many clothes I have that still have tags on them, that I probably will never wear. I am curious to see what items of mine they will accept and which items they don’t.

I use thredUp all the time to sell, but I am yet to find anything I just have to purchase. It’s an awesome way to get rid of all the outgrown clothes and make a few dollars!

@Jessica @ Healthy Wife, Happy Life: I am curious how much money you can make off the clothes you send into them. We have children’s and women’s consignment sales twice a year and minus a small sellers fee we can make 65% of what is sold. This seems like such a wider market I am wondering if I would have more success with this company. Thoughts?

I’ve also heard of this website called Moxie Jean that also sell secondhand clothing AND you also have the chance to sell old clothes. I am currently trying it out and still sorting through some old clothes that my kids have, can’t wait to hear if thredUP works for you!

  4. Jenny

I love that shirt. We love Polo here too. Now the shorts M would never wear so I know that N and C wouldn’t want them either. LOL I’ve looked at ThredUp but hear mixed reviews about sending my items in. I guess I never thought about just buying from them and not also sending mine. hmm someplace else to feed my addiction. 😉

I love consignment stores because I try to dress my children stylishly without spending a lot of money. ThreadUp looks promising. Lots of great girls clothes. And, like you mentioned, the search features makes it easy to find exactly what I want. I guess they are a new website and still building their inventory. I hope they will expand the boys’ clothes to include more designer brands. I noticed a lot of shirts that are Old Navy or Target brands. (Actually I like kids clothes from those stores, but it’s too easy to find cute clearance clothes there.)

    1. Joanne G

@Sandra: i agree. The boys selection has a lot of clothes from Old Navy, Target, Bugle boy, brands from kohls and wal-mart. I really have to search to find the deals such as Polo (Ralph Lauren), crewcuts, Brooks Brothers, Abercrombie kids, etc. The girls lines are awsome. They need to not accept clothes that are outdated. I’d rather see a limited selection for boys, but great brands.

I sold clothes to them and will NEVER do that again. I had awesome barely worn Gymboree outfits and coats and got about $20 for $200+ worth of stuff. Not happy.

    1. Sandra

@Emily KG: Unfortunately that generally seems to be the case regardless of which consignment store. The profit margin on used clothes is low. It’s possible to make more money off of clothes on ebay – especially if it still has tags – but it’s more time consuming.

I sent in a full bag of name-brand (Gap, Gymboree, Quiksilver), lightly-worn boys’ clothes. I only sent in good quality clothes that I would pass on to a close friend. ThredUp took over 1 month to process my payment. Then I got the reward certificate. Are you ready? Sit down: a whopping $1.95! I’m sure these clothes cost up to $300 new. I was hoping to get at least $30 (which I think is reasonable for resale children’s clothing). This is my theory: about a week after I sent in my package I got an email that they are backlogged with submissions and will take 2-3 weeks to process. So, if they have more supply then they can handle, they must be picking the “cream of the crop” highest end, new with tags clothes that they can get the most dough for and pitching the rest. My advice, if you are looking to make a little spending money with this company, go elsewhere–like a local resale shop or Craig’s List. Or you would get more from donating to Goodwill and taking the tax write-off. ThredUp needs to be more transparent (like post a price list for what you can expect to get), or people will quickly learn they can’t trust this service.

I also sent in a bag with a few high quality items- some with tags on them- and just received a note indicating I was receiving 70 cents for my bag. I paid at least 150 for what I sent in. By no means do I expect some huge payout but 70 cents is ridiculous. I think Thred Up is a scam- and they’re moving away from accepting – and this selling- Old Navy and other popular brands. I thought they had a good concept going but I’ve tried to send in good, barely worn items (or never before worn) and have been disappointed at not only how long it takes them to process but at the minuscule amount of money they pay out. This was my third and last time with this company- I’d rather give to charity.

  10. Joan

I want to know how to find the items they kept and posted on Thredup.
    Please answer.

  11. Samantha

I have had some very unpleasant experiences with thredUP. I have sent in several bags and the payouts I received were generally decent, but I have noticed that they often accept the items in questionable condition but NOT the NWT designer brands. Very fishy. In my last bag they did not accept 3 NWT high end items that I had just bought from their shop the month before. Also, in one of my recent orders there were 2 items that were “unavailable” (meaning they couldn’t find them in the warehouse) and I STILL have not been refunded weeks later.

I don’t know if ThredUp is a good idea very poorly executed or it it is an actual scam but all you have to do is look at the reviews on Reseller Ratings to see that large numbers of people had terrible experiences and feel they were ripped off: http://www.resellerratings.com/store/ThredUP. Unfortunately, I found that site AFTER I had already waited more than 6 weeks for them to process my clothes (mostly new, unworn, high end stuff) and they gave me pennies on the dollar for what they accepted while rejecting much of it without explanation.

I have purchased from this site and and had no issue clothing was great. Getting ready to pack 1st bag soon I
Am not too concerned with payout since these are item I no longer want or wear whatever I receive will just go to next order. Great site to buy from.

  15. Brenda Oppert

I wish I had read some of the posts here before sending Thredup clothes-I sent a huge back and only received $3.50 for a pair of shorts. I checked all of the items on their website to make sure it was brands they would accept, but even designer jeans from Europe retailing over $200 didn’t make their cut. Or did they? How do I know if they will still resell and just not give me credit? There are so many complaints, even at BBB, makes me wonder how long this place will stay in business. Hopefully I can keep someone else from making a mistake.

  16. Kerri

Seriously, guys, ThredUP is a scam. Please, please, please do not send in your clothing and accessories. You will get cheated out of both your time and your money. I have had two very unique items that have been rejected and then turned up on eBay a few weeks later. The BBB will not do anything… it’s “pay to play” with the BBB these days. ThredUP has paid them to remain in good standing, so they label all the complaints they get as resolved, whether they are or not. File an official complaint with the SF District Attorney’s Office. If enough people file complaints, hopefully they will be investigated.

I too have had a positive experience purchasing a few items from Thredup. This encouraged me to try selling, and this has been quite a different matter. I sent in two bags, one contained Cole Haan and Rangoni shoes and a pair of brand new Report Signature rhinestone covered boots still in their box (featured item on many fashion sites). I emailed Thredup about their acceptance of these items and was told to use their ?Return Assurance? feature. For a $12.99 fee, what ever it is they don’t accept, these items will be returned to you. I did so and guess what? I received an email informing me that they had not accepted anything from this bag and since there was no ?credit? to deduct the fee from, my items would not be returned to me! I was stunned. I believed that I would be notified to ?go to checkout? and pay the fee. I have written several follow-up emails, no response. How legitimate can this be? Thredup does the ?evaluation? of items, deems the items ?unsuitable,? then disposes of the items as they see fit, even though the contents of the bags were identified for return?! Like another poster’s experience, it wouldn’t surprise me to see the boots show up on Ebay. My second bag is still being processed. Two weeks have passed and since the horrible experience with the shoes, I have grave concerns. This bag contained 25 items. (I included an inventory of the items in the return bag.) Christian Dior, Eileen Fisher, Lafayette 148, Ann Taylor, Nordstrom, etc. many are silk, cashmere items. All in such excellent condition that when I sent them I was confident that most would be accepted and did not identify the bag for Return Assurance. Obviously, have learned since then that this doesn’t make any difference. But, still feel pretty dumb for not doing so. Had I, there might have been some chance of getting something back. In theory it sounds like a great idea to be able to clean out your closet with the convenient, cute ?no cost? bag, but in reality that is the hook. We are all busy, the bag makes it convenient and the idea of making a little money from little used items seems like a win-win. In reality, Thredup ends up with sellable items for pennies, (if that) on the dollar. Their buying practices are suspect. I feel like my items were stolen from me by what seems to be a rigged ?return assurance? policy. I will take the advice of a previous poster and contact the District Attorney’s Office. Wouldn’t it be a good thing if one of the local news shows’ consumer advocates did a story to expose all this? Lesson learned…if I am going to consign, I’ll make the effort with a bricks and mortar store. At least you know immediately what they are taking, you take or donate the rest. With Thredup, you might as well have just given away your items. Problem is you are left feeling totally ripped off.

I purchase from Thredup often and have had no issues. Sometimes it takes a week or so to get my package, but I’ve never purchased anything I needed in a hurry. It’s a great way to outfit my 11 year old girl. I’ve found pieces for her school uniforms and great jeans that look like they’ve never been worn. The prices are higher than I pay in my local big Thrift store, but much better than buying new. I’ve also outfitted myself in a couple of really beautiful cocktail dresses I could never have afforded at their new price tag. I have yet to send in a bag to sell and I may not as most of the negative reviews I’ve read are for folks sending their stuff in. My oldest daughter sent in a bag and got a nice payout for nwt clothes she purchased a couple of years ago while working at both White House/Black Market and Lucky Brand.

They have very high standards but will also reject a perfect item for “style”. They rejected a new Dooney and Bourke for “style” and would not return to me because I did not choose that option when I sent in bag. Never occurred to me that a new Dooney would ever be rejected!
    I was ripped off!

  20. Kat Fisher

Very unhappy with them all around. Clothing and handbag sent in were not accepted due to signs of wear? Some items were brand new with tags attached. Pay out prices are ridiculously low. $10.05 total for a pair of Levis jeans, A&F jeans, Forever 21 jeans, Hollister Shorts, A’gaci top and Anna Shoes. This is what I’m paid? Coach handbag had been used for only 3 days and that along with about 30 other pieces were rejected and not returned. Shipping of items ordered take way too long compared to the competitor TWICE. I won’t shop here again nor refer friends. And CERTAINLY won’t advise anyone to sell items through here. My mistake for not paying for a return bag. Didn’t imagine that so many nice things would have been rejected.

I was very excited to find this company. I do all shopping online due to medical issues. I have tons of clothes many NWT or nearly new. My first bag had 16 items accepted and my payout was almost $20. Little over $1 an item. I wrote them and got an answer about how their payout works. Ok.
Then I got notice that an item sold. I was able to see that EVERYTHING I sent sold for $180. That’s about 90/10, which is rediculous. I’d be happy 70/30 or fair with 60/40,for the convenience.
I have 2 more bags that I held off on sending. These bags have brand new items. I’d rather donate them, as I normally do, than to get ripped off and let thredUp make that much off of me.
