Appleseed Lane, who kindly sent L and I this box to review, is focused on developing a love of learning among kids in preschool and elementary school. They deliver exciting and educational boxes each month filled with all of the materials you need for 3 to 4 science or math projects. Each month’s box has a unique theme and are designed for kids ages 4-10 years old.
Appleseed Lane ships via USPS Ground. I don’t recall what day I received it (it was last week sometime), but I don’t think it took long to come.
This month’s Appleseed Lane theme was “Crime Scene Science” and included projects to help determine who stole the cookie from the cookie jar. L was super into this theme and was determined to find out who did it.
~Project #1 – Invisible Ink: The first project was invisible ink. L and I read the message that the thief left which helped us narrow down the suspects. And then of course we wrote each other messages in invisible ink which is the coolest thing ever! L loved “reading” his sight words and I am thinking about making some flash cards for him to use with the invisible ink!
~Project #2 – Muddy Tracks: The second project was muddy tracks and involved making an decorating your handprint. Everything worked perfectly until I decided to try and move the handprint before it was totally dry. Oops! I should have waited way longer. #fail We are going to try this again though because L was super annoyed with me. I am thinking maybe we’ll make ornaments!
~Project #3 – Hidden Colors: This was another project which led us closer to determining who the thief was. I was a total skeptic and was like yeah, this isn’t going to work. Wrong. It did. We followed all of the instructions and what do you know, we were able narrow it down to two suspects! The thief wrote a note a note on a piece of paper and we had to match up the hidden colors which showed up on the note to the suspects ink samples. It’s hard to explain but it was quite cool.
~Project #4 -Sticky Fingers: The final project was fingerprint samples which L loved. I never thought to take samples using pencil lead!
The box also includes “Seedlings” which is the Appleseed Lane booklet / magazine that gives more information on each of the projects, as well as, additional puzzles and ideas. After the final puzzle, we were able to figure out who took the cookie!!

What a cool box! My 4 1/2 yr old would LOVE this!!!! Do you know if there is any way I can purchase this exact box either from Appleseed Lane or from someone selling their box?
I don’t know what the cutoff for the November box is. But it wouldn’t hurt to e-mail them and see what they can do!

This seems like one of the few boxes that include older kids in the age group, but did is seem age appropriate for 9 year olds? I really want to order a box for my Godson, but that is such a hard age! Any suggestions?
I don’t have a 9 year-old, but we did this last box with my cousin who is 11 and he enjoyed it!
