March 2014 PetBox Review

PetBox, who kindly sent me this box to review, is a monthly subscription box for pets (dogs or cats) that allows you to select what items you wish to receive in your box!  They are the only box (I believe) out there that allows you to do this!  You can also opt for a “Surprise Me” box in which PetBox will hand-select your items for you. You can opt for a dog box, a cat box, or a combination dog / cat box.

The Box

My March PetBox shipped via FedEx Ground, however, I have also received them via USPS Priority Mail, so I am not totally sure how they ship.  They always arrive quickly though.

First Look

My PetBox is a review box, so I get the surprise option. It is customized to my small dogs though, but I do not go in and select the individual items I wish to receive.

Second First Look

This month’s PetBox was very heavy.  I was kind of expecting it to be filled with treats because of that but was pleasantly surprised that it wasn’t.  I could see from the first look it contained a good mixture of goodies!

The Card

Since PetBox is customized to each subscriber they don’t sent an information card.  Just a general information card.  But this is what my March PetBox for Baxter and Buddy (who are considered small dogs) contained:

~Organic Oscar Shampoo and Conditioner ($23.98): OMG how adorable are these?  The top comes off there’s a pump on top.  I was so excited about these that I almost gave the boys a bath right away when the box arrived.  But it’s always such a process (with Buddy at least), so I am holding off.

~BOGO Bowl Premium Dog Food ($5): Oh, the dogs go crazy when I give them a different kind of dog food and this was no exception. I hate to even think about it, but they are getting older and I need to get them on an adult / weight management food in the next few years.

~Jump for Joint Heath Soft Chews for Dogs ($10.99): We have gotten these in the past and the dogs really like them.  I was happy to see them again and I am sure they are too!

~Vetericyn Wound & Skin Care (Sample): I am not sure that we have ever had a need for a wound / skin care product in all the years we have had Baxter and Buddy, but I would assume it will happen eventually?  And we’ll be ready.

~Skinneeez Platypus ($4.69): We have a toy similar to this and it’s one of the boys favorites.  And my boys I mean WB and Buddy. They play with it all the time and it’s hysterical to watch them.   This is going to be the perfect replacement for when they rip that one apart!

Skinneeez Platypus

All totaled I came up with a value of $44.66 for the March 2014 PetBox.  I didn’t include the value of the Wound & Skin Care product though because it was marked sample.  The dog food was as well, but I did see that for sale online, so I included it.  PetBox is $39/month (and drops down to $29/month with a 12 month subscription).  Once again I really enjoyed this box and loved the mixture of products we received.

ETA: PetBox subscribers receive 6 points to select items each month.  The surprise box option is 6 points or you can “buy” items with your 6 points.  I added up the points in this box and from what I could tell, I received 8 points worth of items, plus the dog food sample.  I contacted PetBox for clarification and they indicated that the number of “points” included in the Surprise box option depends on their inventory for the month.

Love it when the boys pose with their boxes! I’m curious about the shampoo and conditioner, as it’s always a big production at our bathtime and I don’t think she’d stand for condtioner on top of everything else. Yes, I have a drama queen! *L*

Baxter is good when he gets a bath. But unless Buddy KNOWS he needs a bath, he tries to crawl up my arm to get out.

    Aww…what a cute dog! Maltese? Poodle? ??

    1. Jennifer

      He’s a shorkie! 1/2 yorkie, 1/2 shih-tzu!

There is definitely something strange here. On my subscription it would cost me 2 points EACH for the shampoo and conditioner you got, and the Skineeze platypus is also 2 points. That alone would fill my box for the month since I only get six points. Isn’t your box supposed to be representative of what a customer could expect to get with a subscription?

    1. Jennifer

I actually e-mailed them about this box today. I mentioned the same thing. They said that my box is representative of the surprise box option and that the number of credits you receive in the “surprise” box depends on what their inventory is like for the month.

Well, I just don’t know about that! I guess if there is a minimum guaranteed value of a surprise box, then the fact that you take a chance on things you won’t use could be offset by your maybe getting an extra valuable one. I could maybe see that, but I just don’t know. I am going to try and reserve judgment for a few months to see what kind of items are available each month. I’ve already bought it anyway, and I know can get the value out of what I am offered this month. I just don’t like the idea that the value can vary so wildly. Oh well, I am still looking forward to trying the Pet treat launcher. Sounds hilarious.

Let me know what happens when you get your first box! I’d be curious!
