Birchbox offers 4-6 (sometimes more) hand-picked beauty and lifestyle samples, delivered to your door each month. You can review the samples you receive on a monthly basis to earn points in their shop, which makes the “real” cost of the box even less. Points accumulate until you are ready to spend, so you can stockpile and combine with coupon codes to get some complete steals (which I try to do).  I have been subscribing to Birchbox for over 3 years now and would say they are one of the most (maybe the most) well known subscription boxes out there.

The Box

Birchbox ships via USPS and all boxes generally ship by the 10th of the month. The monthly “curated” box (like this one) tends to ship earlier, unless you get add-ons.

The Customer Favorites Birchbox

Since I have two accounts I generally opt for that month’s curated box on one account and opt for the standard Birchbox on the other account.  This review is on the September 2015 “Customer Favorites” Curated Box.

With the curated Birchbox boxes you know exactly what you will receive.  They announce the contents in advance so it’s easy (well kind of) to make a decision on which box you want to select that month.  Because I have two accounts I never have to make that decision!

The Information Card

The September 2015 Customer Favorites Birchbox included the following most-loved samples in the history of Birchbox:

~Beauty Protector Protect & Shampoo (~$2.75) and Protect & Condition (~$2.75): There is no size labeled on these, but I am guessing they are 1oz each, which makes them about $2.75/each.  I don’t know if this is my favorite shampoo / conditioner set from Birchbox, but it’s a nice one. It smells good (not too strong, but enough) and leaves your hair shiny and frizz-free. The shampoo is sulfate free and the conditioner protects against heat damage which makes for a great combination.

~Liz Earle Cleanse & Polish Hot Cloth Cleanser Starter Kit (30mL / 1fl.oz) ($7.72): I had never heard of Liz Earle before Birchbox, but I feel in love with them right away.  This is another product that I look at and think, why didn’t I buy more of this?  I guess it’s because there’s always so much new fun stuff to sample?  So anyway, you apply the cleanser and then, using the cloth, you polish it off with hot water.  I have never used anything like it before this product and it’s really cool.

~Harvey Prince Hello (~$3): Of all the Harvey Prince fragrances, I think Hello is my favorite.  It’s described as a mix of citrus and floral notes, but I smell a little spice in there too.  It’s absolutely incredible.

~Marcelle Mini Waterproof Eyeliner Travel Kit (Mulberry) (0.028oz / 0.8g) ($4.50): Now eyeliner is never my favorite item, but I can see why this is the makeup item in the box.  I tested it on my hand and it lasted forever.  It went on smoothly and evenly and lasted through several hand washings without smudging at all.  I was impressed!

All totaled I came up with a value of $20.72 for the September 2015 “Customer Favorites” Birchbox.  Including the points I get for purchasing the box (10 points = $1 to spend at Birchbox) and reviewing / sharing the items in the box (60 points = $6), the value increases to $27.72. I wouldn’t say this was my personal favorite Birchbox, but it was fun to see what the most reviewed / best rated items were.
