Doodle Crate is one of the new(er) lines in the Kiwi Crate family. Designed for girls ages 9-16, Doodle Crate includes all the materials and inspiration for DIY projects such as patterned pouches, friendship bracelets, or colorful candles. Crates encourage girls to tackle new challenges and gain creative confidence!
Doodle Crate ships via FedEx Smart Post and usually takes about a week to arrive to me.
I’ve been in a crafting mood lately and was excited to see a painting project!
The January 2016 Doodle Crate theme was “Watercolor Painting” and included instructions for 7 different watercolor techniques which can be used to create a 12-month calendar! You can also check out their monthly YouTube tutorials for more tips and inspiration.
The crate included a watercolor paint set, a straw, a pen, a wooden stand and dowel, practice paper and calendar pages. Additional materials needed included water, paper towels, salt (optional) & a push pin (also optional).
I may enjoy painting, but I will admit that I am not very good at it. I tested a few of the techniques and found that I liked “flat wash”, “wet wash” and “gradient wash” the best. I should also note that they were the easiest.
My 3 year-old wanted to help paint so he worked on the month of April (his birthday month). We used the straw technique (basically just blowing the paint around) on his. His was for sure more of an abstract, but I love it!
We certainly aren’t going to win any awards for our watercolor paintings, but making them was so fun!
This was probably one of my favorite Doodle Crate projects to date. It was fun and super functional! I do want to warn you that if you get too much paint (or water) on the papers they curl up a bit and don’t stay in the stand as well as they should. I am going to try putting a few heavy books on mine overnight to see if I can’t flatten them out a bit.

Is this a box you can skip on certain months? Or do you have to get one every single month??
I just looked this up because I wasn’t sure. You can “pause by 7:00 PM EST on the 4th of the month to avoid being billed for that month?s crate.”
However, you probably won’t know the theme of that month’s box before you have to skip. I don’t believe they announce them that far in advance.
