Two questions today…
1. Today is W’s birthday (he’s 4!), so I want to hear what YOUR birthday traditions are! We don’t have any solid / set in stone ones other than letting the kids pick where they want to eat for dinner (we are headed to Chuck E Cheese tonight), but I know some people have some amazing ones. What do you do for birthdays?
2. Pets! This is one of my favorite Two on Tuesday questions, so tell me about your pets. What kind of animals do you have and what are their names? We have two dogs – Baxter and Buddy. Baxter – a shorkie (1/2 yorkie, 1/2 shih-tzu) is almost 10 (OMG) and Buddy – a yorkie, will be 9 next month. We have tossed around the idea of getting a cat (the boys would love it), but I am allergic so we’ve held off for now. I think down the road it’ll happen, but I need to figure out how to manage my allergies first.
Happy birthday to W! We don’t have any birthday traditions.
We have 2 dogs, both are rescues. Both are just over a year old. Tonks is a German shepherd/spaniel mix (she is super pretty) and Lupin is our little low rider and is a basset hound/Labrador mix. Both are super cute and have become the best of friends.
I have 3 cats: Fritz, Leonard, and Squiggy. There are breeds that are friendlier to people with allergies. http://www.m.webmd.com/a-to-z-guides/features/do-hypoallergenic-cats-exist
Happy Birthday W!!!!
We also let the kids pick what to do for dinner ( if I make their favorite meal or we go out to eat and they pick the restaurant). Since my 2 are 20 and 17 they get to go with me to the mall and pick out their own gifts. I buy one small surprise present. I’ve done this since the oldest was 10.
We have one dog, a Goldendoodle named Bailey. She is 3 years old.
There is a shampoo that you can use on the cat to keep the dander down so your allergies don’t escalate. My neighbor gets it at Petco for her allergies.
Happy birthday, W!!!
We do the same, pick somewhere special to go eat… Sometimes I’ll push my luck and ask if we can drive down to Galveston and eat on the seawall! In one restaurant they serve pina coladas in coconut shells, so obviously that’s why I want to go. I don’t even like pina coladas…
I have a cockapoo (1/2 poodle and 1/2 cocker spaniel) named Moose… he’s 13! Then a solid black rottador (3/4 rottweiler and 1/4 black lab) named Ricky Bobby, he’s 2 and a few months and absolutely HUGE!
Thank you! Uhh, I would want to eat there too! I almost bought a coconut from a street vendor in Grand Cayman just because I wanted to drink coconut milk from it with a straw. Did I mention I do not like coconut milk?
Ricky Bobby! How do your dogs get along? Is the little one in charge?
My twins just turned 4 this year and we started a scavenger hunt for their presents. They had a blast and I think we will do this every year. With pets, we have an English Pointer named Monroe. He will be 7 and is as sweet as they come.
A present scavenger hunt sounds like a lot of fun! What a neat idea. 🙂
That is such a fun idea!
Ps Happy Birthday W!
Thank you!
My dog is a little over a year old. He is named Briscoe and he is a St Bernard/Golden Retriever. I have two cats. Brix and Kiwi are both 10.
My family does cake and dinner for birthdays. My husband doesn’t like to celebrate his bday so we go out of town the week of his bday so I can’t surprise him with anything. It backfired on him last year when I got him an encounter with penguins (his favorite animals)
Briscoe sounds gorgeous!
He doesn’t like to celebrate birthdays? Really?? And OMG a penguin encounter! we just got a brand new penguin habitat at the detroit zoo and I am so excited to go check it out in person. It looks amazing. They had the penguins walk the red carpet from the old building to the new building, which may have been the cutest thing ever.
Happy Birthday to W! We also follow the tradition of letting the birthday person to pick where/what they want to eat for all 3 meals that day.
We have 3 cats. A long hair domestic, a Persian and a Devon Rex. All rescued. The Devon Rex doesn’t have much hair so no shedding really and the other two don’t really shed, just pull out chunks of hair which looks like dread locks. It’s nice to not have hair flying around like short hair cats leave. I don’t have an allergy to cats though so I don’t know how you would do with them, although the Devon Rex is on the list Alecia posted.
All 3 meals! I like that!
Devon Rex sounds a good cat’s name! I will check him out. I don’t suspect a ton of thse end up at shelters though huh?
Hope W has a great birthday!
My mom makes her chocolate huckleberry torte for birthdays…best day of the year!
We have no kids, so we fill our house with animals….4 cats: Nash, Jax, Asher, & Nyx- all rescues. We also have a chinchilla, who is a sorta rescue. We got her from a student of mine whose family didn’t want her anymore. She is the sweetest, softest thing!
No real birthday traditions here. They get to pick dinner for that night and we get them a cake but that’s about it. Since both of mine are so close together we do a big family dinner with cousins, grandmas et al somewhere around the dates.
I have a cat Kali who just turned 18!!! She is acting like a little old lady now so we know we won’t have much time left with her but we are enjoying her as much as we can while we have her. I’m not sure we will get another pet right away once she passes but that could change when its so quiet around here. Oh yea we also have some fish but since you can’t really play with them they don’t really count.
Ha, we have some fish too. I am not even sure if they have names?
I cannot stand it when my dogs aren’t here. It’s too quiet and so weird. It actually freaks me out.
1) No pets 🙁 Waiting until we get a house!
2) Birthday traditions–I am married without kids, but I still love birthdays so we are trying to start some traditions within our little family. I pack my husband’s lunch every day, but on his birthday I wrap everything in wrapping paper–I also make it Halloween themed because his birthday is on Halloween. We do the traditional make your favorite meal/pick the restaurant. Growing up we didn’t have a lot of traditions for birthdays-so it’s fun to make new ones! I have a Happy Birthday banner I picked up from the dollar store years ago, and I bring that out for each birthday as well as if someone comes over to celebrate their birthday-just a little something that makes it more special!
New traditions are fun because you two can start them together!
Birthdays are always different but I want to start painting on the car windows for everyone to honk at them on their birthdays.
We have two dogs…Reagan is our German Shepard. Her job is to intimidate people from coming in the yard.
Oreo is our shih-tzu and if anyone is brave enough to pass Reagan, he’ll make you sorry.
George (gramps) is my very awnry (is that how it’s spelled?) and very old cat. The kids think I hate him cause I complain ALL the time but the truth is when he goes I’ll miss him. I just won’t miss his mess….no one with cat allergies would be safe around him.
That would be pretty fun. I bet my kids would get a ginat kick out of that.
Oreo sounds like a tough guy! LOL. Baxter (my shorkie) thinks he can intimidate people. He bounces around like Tigger and barks which makes him really hard to take seriously.
We have an American Coker Spaniel. His name is Jack and he is 7 years old. He is so spoiled, and even has his own pillow in bed. Ha, ha! He loves people food more than his own food. We always make sure he wears a bandana! We have a lot of fun with him.
Jack sounds like he’s got a good life!! One of my dogs sleeps on B’s pillow while he’s gone. It’s so funny when he gets home and sees them still trying to lay on it.
And Happy Birthday W, honk honk!!!
W says thank you!
Happy Birthday W! April and May birthdays are the best since mine is April and my son is a May baby. We don’t have a specific tradition and he’ll be 3 this year, but we do have a family party every year so far and I think we’ll keep that tradition. Also when he gets a little older we’ll let him pick where to eat for dinner on his birthday.
We have a 7 year old red Doberman Pincher named Bodhi (after Patrick Swayze’s character in Point Break) and he is 115 lbs. He is huge for a Doberman, but he adores my son and has actually kept someone from breaking into our house. He’s the best family dog. We also have 3 cats, Ruby, Bella and Roxy, who all hate the dog even though he wouldn’t hurt them, but he does like to chase them.
April and May b-days really are the best! B and W are in April and L is in May! I am in June, but close enough ;).
Who has been around longer? The cats or the dog?
We always got to pick dinner, but if our birthday was on a weekend we could pick to go out for brunch instead – there was a killer hotel brunch buffet near us (they had a whole ROOM for desserts!) that I loved. My parents would also put a gift outside our door- usually fun clothes that we could wear to school that day. (glittery dresses for me, things like ninja turtle shirts for my brothers)
We have 2 cats (Takeout and Bliss), 2 chickens (Stepchild and Blackfish), and a fish (Blue). We just had to get rid of our chicken Vader, because she was trying to kill Stepchild… There’s probably some lessons in not naming pets after villains there!
Ohh, I love that special outfit idea! And the brunch place sounds amazing.
You have the best pet names!
We have three dogs! Blue-a Blue Tick Coon Hound/Border Collie mix, who will be 4 in July, Belle-a German Shorthaired Pointer/Beagle mix, who will be 3 in May, and Duke-a possible German Shepherd/Basset Hound mix (we’re not sure where he came from or what his parents were), who will be 1 around December.
I am dying to see this dogs! Do you have an Instagram they are on??
We have a cat named Bubba and a bearded dragon named Yoshi.
Bubba!
Aw, Happy Birthday W! In my house for your birthday you get to pick what you want to do for a whole day and everyone has to go along and pretend to be happy about it, lol.
I have 2 cats (Anna and Amer, named for the couple who built my house in 1791 – Amer is a derivative of Amir and used to be quite popular on the east coast in those days). 2 dogs, a lab (Lucy) and a half lab half rottweiler (Nico) who is too smart for her own good and constantly getting into trouble. Her job is to intimidate people from coming into the yard too, which she does well, but if the person isn’t scared of dogs she’s a total weenie, lol. And 2 horses, Chester, who is 29 and Charmer, who is 8 and very naughty 🙂
Thank you from W! And that’s not a bad birthday tradition at all. At least not when it’s your birthday anyway ;).
So funny! Do Charmer and Nico get along??
No major birthday traditions with my family anymore, but when I was a kid we always got Baskin Robbins icecream cakes!
I currently only have my 27(!) year old horse, Sunset. I’ve had cats and I HIGHLY recommend that if you have allergies, to only consider long haired cats. I know it sounds a little counter intuitive, but I have allergies that are horrendous around my parents 2 short hairs (the kind you pick up and are then covered in fur) but I was fine with my long haired cat. The long haired ones don’t seem to shed on everything you own as much, you’ll tend to find little puffs of fur instead. I could pick up my white/black cat with a black shirt and not get any fur stuck to it! Far less itchy eyes this way 🙂
That does seem like it’s counter intuitive, but I will totally look into it! My eyes get so red and watery and I stuff up instantly!
1. My family the birthday person gets to pick the meal. My mom makes the best chicken and dumplings ever so that is usually what I pick. My birthday is close to 4th of July so most years of my life we have been at the lake for my birthday!!!
2. I have two miniature schnauzers – Asher Jaxon and Myles Davis. They are both a little over a year and both a complete mess and totally loveable. They have wild tongues and you have to be careful or you will be smothered in kisses in about two seconds.
They sound adorable!!
Chicken and Dumplings sounds amazing right now!
